Tough rules counter Bunnell field issues

Potential health risks from allergies to cancer were the main concerns posed by critics when the Town Council in March approved a $1.5 million synthetic turf field to replace the 47-year-old football field of ...

Do I have this right? You have this new multi million dollar sate of the art field on which you can do anything except walk on?

"So what?", Mr. Henrick? I'd like to see you walk from the parking lot to the field in high heels. In fact, forget the field, just walk up or down a flight of stairs in them.

So we'll end up with a ballfield that only elite athletes and extremely well supervised children can use.

Why does this always happen in Stratford? Dirt and grass have been used for centuries. Was none available?

I am just glad I do not have a child that will be playing on that field. ON a hot day I would be very uneasy. I just hope all these athletes in later years do not develop a health problem. I am happy that while my children were in school and playing sports they played on a natural field and one I have in HS now their teams does not play Bunnell, but if she did then she would not be going that day. So this means during graduation the girls all have to wear flat shoes? LOL this article had to make me laugh but it also made me feel worried about athletes that will be playing on that turf. I would be interested to see if Bunnell will be keeping a log on if their athletes who normally do not get sick, end up with respitory infections etc.

It always seems that Stratford makes the wrong decisions! But this time I have to say they still made a good one. The grass field was totally crap with rocks, ruts and perpetual mud, making it very dangerous. The turf is a safer playing surface and these health scares are a farce. Graduation this year was in the gym and most people seemed to like that better anyways. Once the Shakespeare theatre is open, the Stratford graduations would be best held there. Bridgeport schools use the Klien Auditorium very successfully.
As Jezebel says, the girls can't walk up and down that hill to the parking lot safely at Bunnell in high heels anyway.

I went to the hearings, listened to the experts and read as much on the toxic dangers of the artificial turf and it is clear that there is no known health risks associated with it, but there is no dispute that concussions and other risks of sports injuries are reduced. That means that for what FACTS we know today, the new turf is safer.

Once the Shakespeare Theater is open? Those kids haven't even been born yet.

I did NOT say women can't walk up and down the hill in high heels. I said Mike Henrick can't. Besides...how will Irene Cornish see over the podium if she can't wear heels?

It just seems to make more sense to excavate the field and use CLEAN fill and grass. I can't think of a single teenager that wouldn't rather play anything in the mud.

It's like throwing 1.5 million in the toilet!!! Even if the toxic turf was good enough to eat, how could they possibly be SSOOOO STUPID to use it when it's so fragile that you have to take your shoes off before you walk on it!!! It's an athletic field, for (hrist's sake! Are they going to post shoot to kill armed gaurds to make such nobody rides a bicycle on the d@mn thing? Or maybe a 50,000 volt electric fence. I quess people in wheelchars will just have to wait in the parking lot until the game is over! Some people should have STUPID tattooed on their foreheads!!!

Yet another example of the misplaced priorities in Stratford's town government and the Bunnell community. All knew full well access to the field would have to be restricted, but the importance of Bunnell football and band took priority over community events or non-important things like graduation. Typical Bunnell athletics arrogance.

Apparently they aren't going to use the field much since they are busy inside sexually abusing each other.

Does this make Stratford High the safest school in Town?

Since you are going to restrict the field from all those element, you mine as well keep the old grass field. Since no one will use it except for football teams their damage to the field will be to a minimum. Just get someone to water it. What a waste Straford has become. What a joke witth their politcs and policy.

people lets step back for a minute -
BHS isn't breaking any new ground here. for example, soccer goals are weighted with sand. flags are in weighted cones. no problem there.
Tipper - the band is last on the list for access to the field. the 7 fall sports teams come first (3 football 4 soccer)
work - so i guess everyone else that has turf is equally dumb? ist thesame stuff
jez - the field has been redone at least twice in recent memory. throw in spring lax ....
emeral - i count at least 5 other schools in bhs' league that play on turf. so i guess yourchild wouldn't play there either.
finally, how many out there don't put fertilizer/pesticide on their lawn?

Some things are so funny. I graduated from Bunnell when you would wear heels to school, and still did not wear heels to graduation. There is no way to get down that hill in heels and not risk the chance of falling on your face.

Cleats are safe on the field, but not a chair?

Why are people still trying to stop the field?

Have there been any problems with those who grew up playing on asbestos filled fields? How many who grew up in Stratford played at Raybestos field? Do you remember the dump piles beyond the field. How many set up a blanket over those piles to watch the fireworks?

My kids have played on turf, in all conditions. They have played on Bunnells field the way it was. They were safer on turf.

Why is it this town has to find conflict in everything it does? We are the number 1 source of the CT Post news on town politics.

Hey MORON, the Mayor and Mrs. Cornish were AGAINST it, so stop blaming them. This was a Hendrick-Bunnell Football-Marching Band thing, so blame them you jerk. The rich stuck up brat from the North End always get what they want.

To no Heels, People are just pissed off at the Straford officals, they can not get anything done because of the pickerking. Taxes are up, They need windows, boilers, equiptment, pension money that they do not have but they have money for a new field. Miron clan turn out to be a joke, getting rid of good people and putting in his own. Shakespere is something nobody here in Stratford can handle. Why not should people be mad. Every day it the same thing. Let's go back to common sense and maybe something will be done.

Miron spoke out against it. Cornish put her head in the sand and said it was a council decision and not the BOE, now she wants to weigh in on it please
