The mercury issue deserves attention. And another thing, often there are some enclosed lights which are too small to allow the fluorescent bulb of equivalent output, so there seem to be some fan bulbs that aren't available.
Then don't use them. Those bulbs are of such small wattages that they would not make that much of a difference in savings anyway. The 60-100 watt bulbs are where the savings are.
Or, you could just wait. As time goes by, the CFLs or LED lights will come out in more sizes.

Incandescents are 90% heat 10% light.
Switch to the CFLs to save money and have less heat in your house.

The amalgam fillings in your mouth put far more mercury into your bloodstream than eating a dozen CFL's would. And they've been leaching for years! Probably explains why so many Americans are so ignorant.
Higher levels of mercury have been in tube fluorescent bulbs for years. I don't recall the 'dittoheads' blaming the 'libruls' for that.
You rednecks are really something!
Dude it ain't rednecks wringing their hands and worrying about a little mercury. It's the educated liberal jelly-backbones who are raising the fuss. They've lived with fluorescent lights for decades now and all of a sudden......

This kind of reminds me of the MTBE debacle of the last decade. The promise was that the additive would drastically cut down on harmful emissions. But, no one seemed to care that just a few ounces of the stuff can render thousands of gallons of groundwater permanently contaminated. Now we are stuck with the damage.

Hopefully this turns out better.

Sorry, it's not the Liberals who are raising the fuss. Environmentalists are well aware of the issues. The only ones that I see that are complaining are those that heard rumors and have not done any research into it or are people who have taken this as an opportunity to attack Liberals on the "Green" causes that mean so much to them.

Sorry I have to disagree. It is the liberal enviro-wacko's that have been brainwashed in wimphood by their ultra-liberal professors who want to force their vision of how everyone (but them) should live and what rules to play by. Enviro-wacko's don't want to build new power stations, power lines, refineries, drill for oil etc yet their excessive size multiple houses, planes and vehicles are off limits to any criticism. They have forced new regulations on gasoline requiring ethanol resulting in worldwide hunger and ever increaing prices of food. Educated liberal enviro-wacko's think their knowledge gives them some special insight on solving the problems we face but in reality all they have managed to do is make things much worse. All this while the rest of the world is forging full steam ahead developing their economies putting us even more at a disadvantage in competing. The environmentalists are putting us on a path of destruction as a nation. When I see them making sacrifices themselves then I'll start to worry.

Time to send the bills for the clean up to Gore and his ilk! They suckered people into believing that this would stop global warming! Oh yeah, mercury poisoning is much better. Global warming is nothing but a scam meant to damage the western economies and make us like Brazil or China. 3/4 of the homes don't have windows, AC or heating. Oh yeah, that's whom we want to emulate. Give me a break.

Ahh the voice of reason and intelligence in a sea of ignorance!
I switched totally to CFL's (except for the fridge) over a year ago, I have not had to replace one and my power bill dropped a good $10-20 a month. I know that's not HUGE but it's worth it to me.
I bet most people aren't even aware of how many hazardous materials that they have in their homes, from cleaners to high VOC paint to even their PC's motherboards. I especially like the point you made about fluorescent tube lights having always contained mercury.

Al Gore doesn't live like that. Have you noted the extreme size of his various homes and the excessive energy they consume? That's the problem with these type liberals who want to impose their flawed beliefs on the rest of us. The problem is they have no intention of lowering their lifestyles to that they want to force on the non-elites.

I wonder how well an EZ Bake Oven works, when one uses a CFL in it?

CFLs strike me as an awkward compromise. You pay a lot of money for a sophisticated electronic circuit to drive the fluorescent tube, and then throw that circuit away (creating more electronic garbage) when the tube burns out. After experimenting with CFLs in some multi-lamp fixtures in my house, I ended up junking both the fixtures and the CFLs and going to traditional fluorescent fixtures with replaceable tubes. Lower power consumption than CFLs, and the first time I have to replace a tube I'll save more than enough to pay for the fixture.

Hey BuBBa--how'd you manage to make it from Lee's Summit to St. Paul in an hour?

CFL's may give you headaches, but they also let you see into alternate dimensions so I'd say that is a worthwhile compromise. Who cares if they have mercury in them if they let you see the bugblatter beast of traal in person?

Besides all that, switching to CFL's has saved me a solid 10 bucks a month on my bill. Add that into the benefit of seeing into alternate dimensions, and its a good deal. Who cares about the mercury in them anyway? What, are you planning to eat them?

BuBBa, you're living up to your name. You keep on saying that the liberals are educated. Are you proud of being stupid or something? Because if you knew anything about ethanol, you'd know that Archer Daniels Midland, a CORPORATION that's every bit as naughty as Exxon -- which should please you to no end -- has put in over $300 million in advertising ethanol over the past few decades, and countless millions into seducing lawmakers into backing them. ADL's people are not liberals. Ninety percent of their presidential donations go to the GOP. If you don't believe me about ADL's Exxonian shamelessness regarding ethanol, take a look at http://www.cato.org/pubs/pas/pa-241.html . That is, if you dare to be as educated as your liberal enemies. Otherwise, may you get rammed by an ADL 18-wheeler and may that big fat cigar you're always chewing on ignite the whole thing.

When there is a perfectly good and safe alternative, why the hell would I want something in my house that requires a laundry list of precautions in the event of breakage and disposal at a hazardous-waste site? I see I am going to have to stock up on incandescents.
Just like everything else the government mandates...the CURE is worse than the disease. But then again, that also applies to most MEDs prescribed by the so-called medical establishment to MINIMIZE the effects of disease most people bring on themselves.

Strange how all the man made crisis, are linked to the very people who offer up solutions (new products) which are NO WHERE near as efficient or cost effective and often NOT as safe as those they are trying to eliminate.

Ethanol comes to mind. Not energy efficient. NOT green. expends more of the so called EVIL CO2 to produce and manufacture than it saves by being burned as fuel....and creates ANOTHER crisis....FOOD shortages.

When are the pseudo-intellects of our time going to realize that they simply shift the balance of the economy and create a WORSE mouse trap in the name of their pseudo-intelligence and often pseudo-science?

I'll be they already know this and it is the crisis management they DESIRE..this is what gives them authority, power, and MONEY.

All the critics of CFLs are overlooking that fact from the article that stated incandescent bulbs cause higher mercury emissions by requiring the burning of more coal for more energy. Unless you're "off the grid" whilst using incandescents, you're not solving your mercury problem.

I also have not had to change a CFL since I've installed them. Hooray for science!
