SRN staging news events and misquoting people out of context, why is that not surprising? Their attorney is lamenting the courts aren't sympathizing with them? Courts aren't in the business of sympathizing, it's about the facts.

Uh, about that "context"...

Did Inouye say that fixing the sewers would bankrupt the City? Yup,no doubt about that.

So, how is it that $1.2 billion bankrupts the City but $6 -??? billion does not?

So,let me see if I got this right: Dan is in favor of rail spending to bankrupt the City but not in favor of fixing the sewer spending to bankrupt the City.

Or perhaps Dan is NOT in favor of rail spending to bankrupt the City in which case why is he grumbling about SRN's use of his quote?

What stinks in here besides the Parsons PR employees? Oh yeah, must be the political doublespeak.

Right on! Typical Slater double-speak, cut and paste statistics and sentences taken out of context to imply support of their cause.

Nice to see the paper finally waking up to their always-staged publicity stunts.

You repeatedly make that claim but we are still waiting for you to provide proof.....otherwise it just another conspiracy theory....

I'm not a Parsons PR employee either - just a 35 year veteran of the local bus system.....

Come on. Explain what the missing "context"was.

Did Inouye say $1.2b would bankrupt the City? YES.

Then, how come he thinks $6-??? billion won't bankrupt the City. HUH?

Simple, declarative sentences please.

Irregardless of what the mayors say, property taxes will increase in the future. He won't be around to control the property taxes years from now.

guarantee taxes increase. for everiy dollar we make, a very high percentage of our money is hi-jacked by our government.

I'm still voting for Mufi because he is a better candidate than Kobayashi. He lies but not as much as his opponent.

Taking Dan's name in vain? Bad idea, Cliff. Inouye might make sure the transit initiative passes and Mufi wins now, just to teach you and your fellow travellers a well-deserved lesson.

In context, out of context, no context, plenty context, who cares. Did Big Dan say $1.2 billion would bankrupt Honolulu. If yes, then he should either stand by the statement or retract it. Apparently he did say it because he is complaining about its use.
He really should stay out of the rail fracas. It should be beneath him. He should send in the loudmouth, Abercrombie to do the hatchet work.

Perhaps the circumstances are different. Rail has an outside funding source and tax revenue which will probably grow over the period of funding.

The people need to know first of all is that Cliff Slater is being embraced by the Kobayashi campaign. (He was standing next to her during the Panos announcement) Anyone who knows who he is knows that he is a very self serving individual who only claim to being an expert on traffic is his own claims. He owned a jewelry store. The fact that he would anger Senator Inouye shows the intelligence and mentality of this person. He already has his money and doesn't care about the economy. He doesn't care about the everyday citizen. And from what I heard from many people who have had to deal with him directly - is that the only thing he cares about is himself. This is the kind of people that Kobayashi has surrounded herself with and now she will have to deal with the many people who have come to know what Mr. Slater is about. Know this when you lose the race, Mr. Slater will not even know who you are and that is who you have aligned campaign with.

Stop Rail Now shoulld follow through on its petition for a SPECIAL ELECTION to put the rail issue to the voters, since the mayor and the courts prevented the issue to be placed on the November General election ballot.

Considering the current economic collapse, The City and the State and the Federal govt cannot afford/borrow the 4+ BILLION for the RAIL TO NOWHERE....and the taxpayers certainly can't pay for it.

That doesn't quite explain it. Both require huge amounts of tax dollars.

Admittedly, with rail there is fare revenue but rail fares will never approach covering operating costs. Look at TheBus- only about 27% of the operating costs are covered by fares. There's still talk about a possible contribution from the Feds to offset capital costs but that still would leave $5--??? billion for Hawaii taxpayers.

What other "funding sources" are there beyond fare revenue and tax subsidies?

Nope, we're left with concluding from Inouye's statement that if the sewer fix would bankrupt Hawaii then the Train To Nowhere will bankrupt Hawaii.

How unfortunate that the residents of the state of Hawaii will be strapped with this monstrous project for many years to come without a vote by the populace. Very pitiful!!!!!!!!

Have any of you bloggers bothered to poll the voters of Oahu on the two big issues for our county?
Mayors race and steel on steel ballot question? I'm really looking forward to doing what "let the people decide" implies in the name. November 4th we will see. And the polls are showing some pretty interesting things about both the Mayor's race and steel on steel.
