The ice core data shows the last four glacial periods. When you look at this data, the peaks represent the time when the earth's orbit is closest to the sun. The valleys shown on the chart represent when the earth's orbit is most elongated.

The sawtooth pattern of the ice core data represents different climate conditions throughout the record.

Data points on the 420,000 year chart are often as long as 1000 years. So the ice core is representative of a pattern of climate.

Because a single point can represent 1000 years it cannot fully describe climate. Just imagine trying to pick one day in the last 1000 years to represent the climate of the last 1000 years. If we picked a day in the little ice age then this 1000 years would look cold, if we picked a day from the medieval warm period, then this 1000 years would look warm.

Ice core data does show us the pattern of climate and the pattern follow the earth's orbital mechanics.

Do you understand that there are Milankovich cycles? Yes there is a scientific measurement of these cycles.

Have you ever seen a top. As the top slows in its rotation it begins to wobble. The wobble of the earth is the same science. The earth's rotation is not fast enough to prevent a wobble. Today the north star is polaris, 5000 years ago the north star was vega. This changes because of the earth's wobble. This wobble has a cycle as little as 19,000 years as much as 26,000 years, more often 21,000 years.

The earth's axis has a tilt. 9000 years ago, we experienced the warmest temperatures in the holocene optimum. The earth's tilt was a full 24.5 degrees. We are currently 23.5 degrees and decreasing. The tilt has a 41,000 year cycle. However, the tilt is "not required" to reach either extreme. Ex: it may decrease to 21.5 or it could reverse at some point before that.

The earth's orbit is the third factor in the milankovich cycles. Approx 100,000 year cycle. 9000 years ago when we had the warmest temps our earth was in its most circular orbit. In this position we receive the most solar radiation. This orbit elongates over the 100,000 year cycle. When it is the most elongated position we are in the middle of the ice ages.

Ice ages are made up of glacials, interglacials and interstacials. We are in an interglacial. Most interglacials last 10,000 to 20,000 years. We entered this interglacial 14,000 years ago.
