SC Inmate: "Cell Phones Are Contraband of Choice"

these inmates should not have telephones at all. They should have losted all their rights when they broke the law and ended up there. If you going to give this all of this, why lock they up.

I no someone whose boyfriend is in prison. Last year she showed me a picture of her friends private parts.He was able to get his phone through an employee of the prison.

I am not perfect. I have been in trouble with the law before it's so hard for me to be a part of the community when there is no one that wants to give me a job because I have been convicted of a felony.Can you help me or tell me what am I suppose to do?

MS. MARILYN,I mean no disrespect.You are right somewhat, they have help getting drugs, phones and personal information in the prisons and it don't always come from family and friends.It sometimes come from the people that work at the prisons.

what an idiotic soapbox to climb onto, WLTX. say you get your way, and no cell phones work inside the prison. it wouldn't be hard to cut the phone line, and then the entire prison would be cut off from the outside -- guards included. that doesn't sound too safe now, does it? sweeps sure brings out the dumbest stories.

This is not a dumb story - the basis of the story is providing adequate funding to the prison system to properly protect citizens. If there was adequate/sufficient funding provided to DOC than an ample number of guards could be hired and paid a competitive salary so guards would not be tempted to do a side-hussle.

Besides, this is not sweeps week - that occurs at the end of May!!!

If you start wasting your time looking at pictures of "your" friend boyfriend's private part than you would have more time to focus on finding a decent job and improving your skills. I would like to suggest that you learn a trade and go into business for yourself.

If you are trying to be on the straight and narrow why would you waste your time looking at someone's else body parts?

If you put junk in your mind - guess what comes out - junk!

Re-read the story Marilyn. They aren't getting the cell phones as gifts. They are receiving pieces parts smuggled in or tossed into their fencelines, and assembling the cell phone later. The point of the story is to expose the act -- in part, I believe is because it is a huge problem that SCDC is working (with their underfunded and corrupt staff) to overcome. But the prisoners aren't "allowed" to have the cell phones. I know, the story reads a little convoluted.

OK, this is easy! You catch an inmate with a cell phone - you bring him out to the yard and break his wrists right there in front of God and everybody! That would send out a message. No rights, no privelages! You are an inmate... you are property of the SC jail system. Show them who is boss!

Why can't the prison monitor the signals emitted by cell phones within the range of the facility boundaries. An alarm could be sounded or a red light turned on in the area where the signal is picked up. It wouldn't be fool-proof but it would certainly discourage the use of cell phones by inmates. If inmates are using the phones when they are in the "yard", that should be obvious to guards who are observing then. This should not infringe on the rights of those who live close to the facility.

Good idea. There are ways to prevent this. Someone ( and alot of them) have just been slack and the inmates are paying the guards to bring the phones in and also to turn their head while they use them. Internal sweep. That is what is needed- for drugs, weapons, cell phones, whatever. Every CO I've ever talked to says there is more in prison than out. Why? There is NO reason for that. I know they can't be sure when they hire them ( besides background cks) but they can sure send in some moles and video cameras to find out what they are doing. The prison system is out of control.

It don't matter how hard we try, these inmates are going to get this stuff. I think that the block at the prision will be the best thing. That way you can't get signal inside the jail. Heck, all you have to do is put on a metal roof on the prision. I know everywhere I go that has a metal roof, my phone no likey it. lol
