Some Blacks Insist: 'I'm Not African-American'

I agree with this. I do not want to be called African American, since I know nothing of Africa, have no relatives or family from there, and cannot trace any known lineage to Africa. I am AMERICAN, not African. Just call me American without any hyphenated qualifier.

WHITE PEOPLE continue to force citizens to accept these silly "race" labels they have invented, and none of us can understand why it is so important to white people that there be a "race" label forced on everybody.

I prefer to be called Black, but I don't make a big deal about being called African-American. Black might be better since it would encompass all Back people.

I was fine with Afro-American. It was Jesse Jackson who came up with "African-American" and then everyone from the media and some blacks just accepted. I am amazed how in the past people followed this fool and thought of him as some representative of all blacks in the America. Now today he is just considered a attention hog and clown.

Also it doesn't make sense to name a ethnic group after a entire continent.

Your blanket statement encompassing all WHITE PEOPLE is just as racist as any statement meant to generalize all colored people.

Personally, I think that anyone who insists on being a hyphenated-american is truly Un-American.

You are human. You are not white. I get that, but do you? White people invented the concept of "race" based on appearance, nobody else did. But your first words are: "Im white". You probably do not realize just how deeply this race concept is embedded in our consciousness, but it was FORCED there.

I am educated and successful, no complaints about my personal life or station in life at this time. But that does not change the facts of the matter. Who is the group creating the "race" tags and the little boxes on forms to mark off which "race" one belongs to? Why does the United States still do this but nowhere else does?

We can't seem to decide. We are Cullerds, then Negroes, then blacks, then Afro-Americans, then African Americans.

Who even came up with black and white people, the only two races identified by a color!!!!

Geez, you really think white people invented "race"? I don't think anybody knows who invented it. I'm sure it's been around as long as people have been. Saying somebody is "black" or "white" is really no different than saying somebody is "short" or "tall" or "male" or "female".

It is nothing more than a simple way of describing the differences in our outward appearance.

LOL, it is known:

Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, 1785.

He invented the racial taxonomy we know of today as "race". It was done in the 19th century to manipulate public perception of blacks as "subhuman" and thus justify slavery. Prior to this, there was no appearance based "race" classifications anywhere in any culture. Nobody was referred to by skin color, only by nationality. Some groups were defined by language, none were defined by skin color.

Just because you do not know the facts does not mean they do not exist. Please look them up to verify.

It's funny how black people cannot trace themselves to where they clearly come from, but can find the tiniest drop of white or mixed blood in them to shout out to everyone that they are mixed, sad.

America is for the natives, anyone else in it is not simply an American.

How did your family pop up in America, you sure are not a native, you were not hiding under a rock, you are from Africa or some other black country, face it and learn your family tree a littler better.

Black people are not even treated equally in this country.

The very rich keep the race thing going to keep Americans pitted against each other.white, black, red ,yellow, these are tags used for that.Some people cant find any thing too be proud of ,,race is A safe bet ,some one is going to agree with them.

Hmmm, I've heard Amerindians referred to as Red Man.
And Orientals as Yellow people.
Linnaeus originally had races as White, Black, Yellow and Red.
Brown people are referred to those from India to Malaysia and Aboriginies of Australia.

And UFO aliens are mostly known in 2 groups - the Greys and the Greens, or little Green men.
