It really amazes me how selfish smokers really are to think that smoking around other people is ok. It is just RUDE and INCONSIDERATE OF OTHERS! Granted, some smokers have said they would gladly put their cigarettes out if politely asked, but the fact is that just one person smoking in a restaurant affects everyone even if they didn't intend on it.
I am not here to debate how cigarettes effect one's health, but I am here to point out that as a non-smoker, I have the right to go into any establishment that I choose WITHOUT being subjected to second-hand smoke.
Smokers really need to take a step back and realize how they are affecting other people with their cigarette smoke. I am glad to hear that our state is going to pass a law to ban smoking in restaurants/bars because I do enjoy going out with my wife and daughter to a nice restaurant and not have to be subjected to SHS. The smoke permeates into everything, walls, chairs, tables, food, clothing....literally everything it touches. I shouldn't have to leave just because a few people decide to light up. Now these establishments will be MUCH more enjoyable places to visit! Imagine, going out with friends or family to ANY bar or restaurant and not have to worry about reeking of smoke when you leave, or having your eyes burn all night long because of how bad the smoke really is.
My sister has horrible asthma and is unable to even go into any bar, and many restaurants because of how badly the smoke affects her. Is it fair to her, or others like her that she can't even go inside because of her condition? No, it's not. Smokers have always had the choice to take it outside, but the majority of them choose to smoke inside the establishment, even though plenty of non-smokers are also inside. Again, it is just plain selfish and inconsiderate of them, but they do not seem to care.
Now they don't have a choice.
Thank you State of Michigan for caring enough about your citizens.
According to your logic the owner of the business has no right to cater to who he wants.

If you want to talk about selfish, this takes the cake, "but I am here to point out that as a non-smoker, I have the right to go into any establishment that I choose WITHOUT being subjected to second-hand smoke."

So your rights trump a private business owner and other adults engaging in a legal activity, right?

You can whine all you want with this "Woe is me, I'm foced to enter a bar" attitude but it's not going to stop the closings that are, and will happen.

Of course you'll probably be the type to claim there's going to be no ill effect on bar/restaurants even when it's happening right in front of your eyes. I've seen it before. It's happening in my state right now.

I get asthma from perfume & cologne, I can't even go into a department store or stores that sray it around like Abercrombie & Bath & Body Works. Does that mean it should be banned? NO- it is my CHOICE to NOT GO THERE!!! You people are just not getting the point that nobody is forcing you to go to a place that allows smoking..IT IS YOUR CHOICE.

This is nothing more than the slow change of this country over to a socialist government. The govt. is systematically taking away our freedom of choice. Isnt this what is the basis of a socialist govt is? A small group of the "elite" leaders deciding what is best for the people?? The governement is too large to begin with and they control way too many our of personal choices already. No I am not one of those nut-jobs that thinks the government should be closed down but i do believe that we should be allowed to make more of our own choices without being made into a criminal.

Well said Mike. This is about more than smoker’s rights or non-smokers rights. It's about all our rights and personal freedoms. Our forefathers came to this country because they wanted freedom, freedom from the oppressive government control they felt. They wanted the right to worship without fear of reprisal, to own land, start a business to earn money and provide for their family. In other words, the right to Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. I was wearing my seatbelt long before it became a "law". They are already trying to tell me what to eat, what to drink, what NOT to smoke. Let’s not forget that they are working to take our guns away, and are telling us what type of car we should drive. And the house I “own”, what a joke, if I miss my rent payment (property taxes) to the government they can take it away. What’s wrong with this picture people? As I said in an earlier post, what is next? Is big brother going to tell me where I can go to church, how many children I can have, as Mike says, slowly over time our freedoms have been eroded. Beware people; open your eyes, it doesn’t matter if you smoke or don’t smoke; do you really want a small group of people in a big fancy building deciding again, how YOU should lead your life? A tall skinny man from Illinois said it best. Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.~Abraham Lincoln

So what do you suggest? Do we get rid of ALL the rules, codes, laws and ordinances? Or just the ones that effect your habit/addiction?
I don't think people want to go back to the "Wild Wild West" days with no laws.

When a legal product is found without a doubt to be hazardous THAT product needs to have restrictions placed on it. Cigarettes, alcohol, prescription drugs, fireworks, toys, I could name a hundred of them.

If you can prove without a doubt that Second Hand Smoke is actually good for you, maybe then we can "lighten up" on these smoking restrictions. BUT until then please smoke outside.

Why smoke outside of a bar when ADULTS can choose for themselves whether or not they want to enter or not. Why do you need Uncle Sam to hold your hand. Non-smokers seem to have NO PROBLEM deciding on their own whether or not to enter a bar that permits smoking.

Your quote:

"So what do you suggest? Do we get rid of ALL the rules, codes, laws and ordinances? " No, just the one's that strip away private property owner rights. Duh!

It has been claimed, alleged, accused, and documented as such: but SHS has not been "proven without a doubt" that it is the killer of innocent bystanders as is charged.
NO one has stated that SHS is "GOOD" for you. But, it is challenged as "pure hyperbole for the purpose of gaining support for the "agenda"...
If you can't prove beyond a doubt that it does what the anti-smokers claim, there is NO sound argument FOR banning it.
YOUR posted hyperbole is proof of the "mass hysteria" caused by your mindset.

wow! thanks for your input...you must agree in whole with the other guy who said people can't be allergic to SHS b/c it has no protiens in it...what a load of crap. It is not natural in any way shape or form, therefore can not possibly be good for you whether it has been proven or not!

And for the record...I'm a non, if I want to go somewhere to eat, I will ask for non. I don't sit anywhere near smoking for the benefits of my kids, and I also don't bit2h about an establishment if it does permit smoking...It is my choice where I sit. And most smokers will respect the "rules" and stay to their spots as well... I am all for if you want to kill yourself, all that I ask is that more smokers be aware of their surroundings. And for the love of pete...please don't smoke around your kids...IE, in your car/homes...I know its yours...but they can't leave, let alone have a choice...I'm not down for banning and taking away rights, but I am for educating better!

Here is a thought that applies to this and many other "touchy" subjects in today's world:

Don't want to smell smoke? Don't go to the bar.
Don't "agree" with alcohol? Don't drink.
Against abortions? Don't have one.
Don't like guns? Don't own one.
Don't agree with the bible? Don't go to church.
Offended by homosexuality? Don't date someone of the same sex.

BTW I could care less if someone smokes in a bar, while I am consuming a drink killing my brain cells. Neither is the brightest thing in the world but I am an adult and I can make decisions regarding my health. I don't smoke, but smoke 'em if you got 'em. If you are so offended by the smoke in a restaurant, look at your plate for all the fat, cholesterol, sodium, etc in the average chain restaurant meal.

Vote Libertarian and get the gov't out of your bedroom, out of your wallet, and off your butt.(The fair tax isn't a bad benefit either!)

here's the problem with that slick, I enjoy going to bars, bars are for drinking, playing pool, shooting darts, listening to music, watching sports. Why can't you just step outside and smoke for a couple minutes? Why are you subjecting the employees and patrons to YOUR harmful habit? Who do you think you are? I have a habit of picking my nose and flinging it, sorry if it lands on you.

I understand and respect people who simply don't care to be around SHS. I also am aware that people have genuine medical reasons for not wanting to be exposed. They should be able to walk into an establishment and NOT be at risk.

Though I may not believe the "claims", it does not mean that I would callously ignore people around me, who wish to not breathe in SHS.

Yes, there should be separate establishments that would accommodate BOTH groups.

I do not agree that people can't be allergic to SHS: it is exhaust in the form of smoke. People are allergic to many things. My youngest child is allergic to insect bites and stings, and we need to take responsibility for her allergies.

I applaud your last sentence: I don't agree with the bans, either. Yes, people need to be educated, but leave the parents alone to educate according to what they perceive to be a health threat. If a person does not believe that SHS is as harmful as claimed, they will inform their children of what they feel is the "truth", as you will inform your children of what you feel is the truth.

Sometimes I wish and think these laws are being passed for the "Patrons" but in reality they are being passed to "PROTECT" all workplace employees.
In 2008 ALL employees should have a safe and healthy environment to work in.
Also in 2008 all that is KNOWN about the hazards of Second Hand Smoke NO OWNER should be allowed to ignore these facts and just be able to hang a sign that says "Smokers Allowed". How backwards can you get???
