Wright is a bigot, pure and simple. But then, so are many other "preachers". Why this double-standard for blacks still exists is a mystery to me. If a white "preacher" said the same things, just substituting "white" for "black" and vice-versa, he'd be picketed and pilloried before nightfall. If a church had a website that said "Unashamedly White", that church would be burned to the ground in days.
I'm sorry, but if you don't like racism and bigotry, then don't be racist and bigoted yourself. It works both ways. That Obama sat there for 20 years listening to this crap without saying a word says more about Obama's reasoning (or lack thereof) and disturbs me, makes me question his reasoning ability in other areas as well. I simply do not trust he would "have my back" when needed. |

I am totally disgusted at the way people have taken what was said out of context. When are people going to acknowledge the atrocities that were committed against a whole race of people ... and that the effects of those atrocities still live on today in the privelege of some and the continued struggle for true equality of others.

And your argument is to JUSTIFY that anglo-Americans should idly sit by and accept this hogwash...the likes of David Duke...only from black clergy??? Every white and mixed churches I've ever attended have supported ALL the poor in our neighborhoods. Our outreach programs were (and are) COLOR BLIND. How about some earthly ACCOUNTABILITY for those purporting to be clergy? Sorry...it goes both ways and they will be known by the fruits of their labor! |

HEY>>>>> Hate the preaching, not the preacher.

One simply cannot defend the Reverend. Were it so, Mr. Obama would have done so. But these are divisive, hostile comments made from a glory-hungry minister. And the sad fact is, this man may cost this country the privilege of having an inspired candidate become President.
But, I really want to address something I haven't understood for a long time: how am i, as a white man, living in 2008, responsible for slavery? Everytime i hear this suggestion, i think in that event, do all Germans share in the guilt of the Nazi's? We are responsible for what happens in our time, because that is the moment we can change. I pray Obama wins. Not because he is black, frankly, I didn't think about it much until the Wright incident. I think he is inspired, and the only person who could possibly create some change in this country. We all need to leave the racial issues behind. We have far greater enemies than ourselves, or our history. |

So Rev. Wright is a Black Racist and is anti-American but tolerant of homosexuals?
Big deal. Even a broken clock is right twice a day! Barack Obama still should have MUCH MORE forcefully separated himself from this guy. I agree with "Beware." What if a White politician had been a long time buddy of David Duke or went to one of those White Racist "Christian Identity" Churches? Everyone would (rightly) be all over him for that. But just because it's Black Racists that Obama is a fellow traveler with, my fellow liberals treat it like it's OK? Well, I bet I'm one of the most liberal people out here in Lake County Illinois, and it's definitely NOT OK with me. |

I can defend Rev Wright. He has championed GLBT causes his whole life.
He has the right as any American to say what he wants to say. I don't agree with his statements at all. My problem is not with him. Rather, with Obama being a hypocrite. Obama showed bad judgement aligning himself with someone who speaks so poorly of the country that gives him the freedom to do so. Then he lied about it. Not Reverend Wrights fault. GO HILLARY! |
|
But Clinton also has her own issues with anti-gay pastoral supporters.
The Rev. Harold Mayberry, pastor of the First African Methodist Church in Oakland, has voiced for years his opposition to homosexuality. In fact, some have said he has compared homosexuality to thievery. When Mayberry came out in support of Clinton, her campaign touted his endorsement, sans any mention of his anti-gay rants. She has also received a $1,000 contribution from Bishop Eddie L. Long of the mega-church New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Georgia, who previously led an anti-gay marriage march in Atlanta. Of course, when it comes to McCain, it wouldn't be a story if his ministerial supporters are anti-gay. It would be news if any of them actually supported homosexuality. The bottom line: Everyone has an association that is open for scrutiny. Our real focus should be on the candidates and their views on the issues, because one of them will stand before the nation and take the oath of office and swear to uphold and protect the Constitution of the United States. |

It isn't hogwash ... although it is more comfortable for some to believe that it is. |

Yes, I did hear it ... I guess maybe you didn't fully understand it. |

THING YOU ARE DOING IS MAKING YOURSELFS LOOK VERY FOOLISH. BUT THAT'S BESIDES THE POINT.
SO YOU WANT ANOTHER REPUBLICAN AS YOUR PRESIDENT THAT'S YOUR CHOICE BUT YOU HAVE THE BLOOD OF MANY PEOPLE ON YOUR HANDS AND MANY MORE TO COME RIGHT HERE IN THE GOOD ALL USA. MCCAIN STATED A FEW WEEKS BACK THAT THERE WILL BE A "TERRORIST ATTACK" IN USA TO CHANGE THE OUT COME OF ELECTION...THEN MCCAIN GOES ON HIS LITTLE JOURNEY TO MIDDLE EAST...MCCAIN COMES HOME THE DEATH RATE OF SOLDIERS IS RISING...IN HIS SPEECH COUNT HOW MANY TIMES HE SAYS ISLAM....YES THE GOOD OLE USA IS GETTING READY ONCE AGAIN TO ACT LIKE ANOTHER COUNTRY/RELIGION/RACE...WHATEV ER SUITS THEM AT THE TIME TO KILL A FEW THOUSAND AMERICANS OFF TO HAVE THE ULTIMATE EXCUSE TO INVADE...CAN YOU GUESS? YOU GOT IT IRAN THIS TIME. THINK FOR A MINUTE WHY WOULD SUCH A MESSED UP GOVERMENT EVER ALLOW A WOMEN AND A BLACK MAN (WHO THEY KNEW HAD MUSLIM IN HIS BACKGROUND) RUN FOR PRESIDENT...WELL OF COURSE FOR THEIR BENIFIT. AND JUST LIKE 911 SOMEONE ELSE GETS THE BLAME AND WE GET THE BEST EXCUSE THERE IS TO GO TO YET ANOTHER WAR/INVASION. NO I AM NOT OBAMA OR HILLARY BACKER I AM NOT VOTING, I REFUSE TO BE APART OF THE BLOOD SHED. SO MAKE SURE YOU ALWAYS LET YOUR LOVED ONES KNOW YOU LOVE THEM. HUG THEM EVERY DAY. THIS NEXT ATTACK YOU CAN BET IS GONE TO BE IN AN UNEXPECTED PLACE. I WOULD ASSUME IN A VERY WELL TO DO PLACE THIS TIME AROUND. YOU CAN RANT AND RAVE IM CRAZY I DON'T CARE, IT'S RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR EYES YOU JUST NEED TO OPEN THEM ALITTLE. YOU CAN BET YOUR GONE TO HEAR OH THIS ONE OR THAT ONE HAS THREATEN AN ATTACK, YOU KNOW HOW THE GOVERNMENT CAN DOES PUT WHAT THEY WANT OUT THERE. BUT THE SHAME OF IT IS IT WILL BE FROM THEMSELFS. GOD BLESS |

Pops Racer--"So Rev. Wright is a Black Racist and is anti-American but tolerant of homosexuals?"
I absolutely deny he's a "racist," and anti-American is pretty darn hard to swallow, too. "Big deal. Even a broken clock is right twice a day! Barack Obama still should have MUCH MORE forcefully separated himself from this guy." Horsecrap. Obama has expressed his views on the issues, end of story. Wright's not running for office and HIS views on issues are not relevent. It's sleazy as all hell to continue trying to make this an issue, and it shows how racist our nation still is that people don't get the different ways we approach church and faith in this country and have such outrage at people who have different ways of doing so. "I agree with "Beware." What if a White politician had been a long time buddy of David Duke or went to one of those White Racist "Christian Identity" Churches? Everyone would (rightly) be all over him for that." That comparison is too stupid to be BELIEVED! You cannot POSSIBLY think that a person who is outraged WITH VERY GOOD REASON at the racism of this nation and said some outrageous things in anger is comparable to white people who think blacks are a lesser race of people or that gays should be stoned to death. That's assinine. "But just because it's Black Racists that Obama is a fellow traveler with, my fellow liberals treat it like it's OK?" The comparison is ridiculous, invalid, and DEFINATELY calls your liberal claim into question. "Well, I bet I'm one of the most liberal people out here in Lake County Illinois, and it's definitely NOT OK with me." May I suggest if you're really liberal you GET OVER THIS NON-ISSUE which has been drummed up by racists who know white America cannot STAND seeing a black person this close to being president. By the way I say all this as a Hillary Clinton supporter. If folks want to take shots at Obama on the issues and on his record, swell, but these vicious attacks against his MINISTER are gutter politics at their worst. And while I disagree with a lot of what Rev. Wright had to say there are ministers on the right who say far more offensive and dangerous and hateful and ugly things every day and are absolutely worshiped as great Americans. When I hear politicians getting blasted in this fashion for hanging around bigots like James Dobson, THEN we can discuss Wright. |

fuzi--"Wright is a bigot, pure and simple."
Hogwash. Making ANY of this "simple" is happening only by those who WANT it to be simple, because the complicated issues here remind us that maybe we weren't as ready for a black president as we thought. "But then, so are many other "preachers". Why this double-standard for blacks still exists is a mystery to me." Sort of like how the unemployment rate for blacks is about twice that for whites but many whites STILL whine like newborn pups about affirmative action? "If a white "preacher" said the same things, just substituting "white" for "black" and vice-versa, he'd be picketed and pilloried before nightfall." An assinine comparison. Do you REALLY think whites and blacks are absolutely equal? That our backgrounds are absolutely equal? That how they view us and how we view them is from the same vantage point? "If a church had a website that said "Unashamedly White", that church would be burned to the ground in days." False, but it would be criticized and with extremely good reason. Comparing the two as if they were the same is to IGNORE the differences between where whites and blacks are now, and where we've been. You cannot possibly do that here, but many are, they're simply ignoring the context because it makes them uncomfortable and it's SO much easier to pretend that Wright's the same as David Duke when nothing could be further from the truth. Tell me something...there are lots of whites in this church. Do you think an "Unabashedly white" church would have black members? Of course not. "I'm sorry, but if you don't like racism and bigotry, then don't be racist and bigoted yourself. It works both ways." Wow, that's just immensely racist. You really ARE just absolutely IGNORING the context, IGNORING the FACT that racism has and does exist in this nation and that we're NOT coming at it from the same background, the same experiences, and the same place in the world. Listen, since you seem to have forgotten these FACTS...we came to this nation by choice to have better opportunity and freedom. They came here in chains to be farm impliments. To think that people from those two backgrounds should view this nation exactly the same is moronic. "That Obama sat there for 20 years listening to this crap without saying a word says more about Obama's reasoning (or lack thereof) and disturbs me, makes me question his reasoning ability in other areas as well." Oh, bull. I think you didn't trust him to begin with because he's a Democrat and liberal, perhaps even because he's black but I bet you'd say the same about Hillary. Fact is you're just DYING for an excuse to rip the guy and now you found one, pathetic though it may be. I go to church every week, have most of my life over 40 years. Things have been said there I disagree with, the idea that you stand up and shout down a minister or get in a fight with them, or leave every time something gets said you don't like is ridiculous. You're there to listen, to THINK, not to agree with everything a preacher says. You may not be able to stand the intellectual challenge of being made to think about uncomfortable subjects, having unconventional opinions and views thrown your way. We need a president who CAN deal with that, who CAN listen to someone with a different view and then make up his or her own mind. What did John McCain's minister talk about Sunday? Don't know? Me neither. Know why? BECAUSE IT'S NOT A CAMPAIGN ISSUE! And Jeremiah Wright shouldn't be, either. "I simply do not trust he would "have my back" when needed." The same bigotry we saw with Kennedy rearing it's ugly head again. Sad. He's one of "them" and "they" won't stick up for "us". |
