I'm surprised that the ACLU hasn't forced removal of all religious trappings from government functions.

I was confused when I heard a government offical was taking such an action so I went to the safe in our house and looked at my passport. I was happy it said United States of America.

I would like to see anyone in this country take a similar oath in Iran with the bible. They could review the article in the Wall Street Journal today as to how Iran deals with such actions.

Instead of placing his had on the Quran he should kiss the ground that he lives in the USA.

Did you not understand this paragraph in the article?
"Moe, speaking in a telephone interview, noted that the tradition is for all members of Congress to be sworn in together on the House floor. It's in the photo-op ceremony that a Bible is used -- or in Ellison's case, the Quran."

Using the Bible or the Quran is just for looks.

Still, he is not to be trusted. Keep him off most of the committees too.

Headlined, "America, Not Keith Ellison, decides what book a congressman takes his oath on," Prager argued that using the Quran, rather than a Bible, "undermines American civilization."

"Insofar as a member of Congress taking an oath to serve America and uphold its values is concerned, America is interested in only one book, the Bible," he wrote. "If you are incapable of taking an oath on that book, don't serve in Congress."

that pretty much sums it up for me.

Why is he not to be trusted? He will take the exact same oath as the rest of the Congress members, president and all other elected officials..... none of them are required to swear on the Bible during their actual oath of office.
The Constitution only requires they swear to uphold....

. Do Members take an Oath of Office when they enter the House of Representatives?
As required by Article 6 of the U.S. Constitution, Members of Congress shall be bound by oath or affirmation to support the Constitution. Representatives, delegates, and the resident commissioner all take the oath of office on the first day of the new Congress, immediately after the House has elected its Speaker. The Speaker of the House administers the oath of office as follows:

"I,(name of Member), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God."
Representatives elected in special elections during the course of a Congress generally take the oath of office on the floor of the House Chamber when the Clerk of the House has received a formal notice of the new Member's election or appointment from State government authorities. On rare occasions, because of illness or other circumstances, a Member-elect has been authorized to take the oath of office at a place other than the House. In those circumstances, the Clerk of the House sees to the proper administration of the oath.

The <> form of the oath is prescribed
by statute (5 U.S.C. 3331; I, 128):``I, AB, do solemnly swear (or
affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United
States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true
faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely,
without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion, and that I will
well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am
about to enter. So help me God.''

I read the articles before I made my post, just didn't want to take up all that space.
No where is it written that a person must swear on a Bible, and from what I understood from the article, during the actual swearing in, no Bible is used. The Bible is only used for the after swearing in ceremony photos.
With that understood, what matters it if is a Bible, Koran or Webster's Dictionary?

I am reminded of the unwashed bum, standing on the street corner wearing a bi-folded sign that portends; "The End Is Near!"
