Seems to me that everybody misses the point about Obama. The problem with Obama has nothing to do with race or religion. The problem with Obama is captured in three words: CROOK COUNTY DEMOCRAT. If you love Stroger, Daley, and Blagodovich you'll love Obama.

I find the different takes on the article to be very interesting as it illustrates the filters with which we all view the world through. To me the salient point of the article is identifying the widening economic divide in the US. Racism, bigotry, & misogyny have always been based on fear of loss of wherewithal. The poor are and always will be a majority, and with the continuing government policies of creating a favorable business environment for multi-national corporations the club is getting bigger every day. The debate this election should be about is what is the purpose of a nation, supporting business or supporting the principles, this nation was founded on. The beauty of the US Constitution is that despite being written by the elite of the time it empowers all of us. BTW - Capitalism does have a dark side, TNSTAAFL.
Left to themselves, economic forces do not work out for the best except perhaps for the powerful. John Kenneth Galbraith - Foreword "Economics & The Public Purpose".
See Intelligence at work!! I love your comment! I never could have said it like this - but this is what I try to say!
We are at the cross roads of defining which way to go - because the people are seeing their demise of rights - and corporations being the major power in the country - if the people do not follow the corporations - we perish.
We do have enough rights left to make a decision and stand now - this is the turning point!! We as citizens have to take our country back for ourselves! The only candidate that I hear that sees this is Obama - what can I say??

Essentially Meghan Daum's article boils down to the following claim:

Barrack Obama's success is wholly due to "affirmative action" as mandated by "whites", blacks, and all "other suspicious sorts" (inference mine).

Its sad that it has come to this; "whites" and "off whites".

I wonder what category Ms. Daum fits into given that the article is meant to be a rallying cry which appears to loudly proclaim: "WHITES UNITE! WE ARE UNDER ATTACK!!!".

Now Hillary Clinton has accused the Obama campaign and the press of "sexism", and Geraldine Ferraro as usual, like Meghan Daum is on the vanguard with her, utilizing their various forms of codespeak to draw groups against each other, ostensibly as a strategy to securing Democratic nomination.

Definitely the blog doesn't make fun of "white" people, but of "progressive white" people. The "right sort" as it were. Too many people don't even get the joke. That said, I know many people who fit the stereotype completely. I even had to sit through a Thanksgiving where every time someone arrived at the party they'd look at the football on the tv and say "football is for fat people, now soccer, that's the real sport!" every time!

So yes, Hillary is not attractive to the white people with "white guilt".

Spot on. Many voters who vote for Obama are doing so because it is the cool thing to do. There is a great article in the Atlantic about Obama's fundraising machine and how he is rolling in money as the result of creative marketing. The bottom line - he is the new it product. Very well thought out marketing campaign, but does he bring anything to the table other than being the "next big thing"?

Why is racism towards whites OKAY in this country? If this list was "Things Black People Like" I can only imagine how up in arms people would be. Incidentally, I am white, and I don't like Indie music OR Barack Obama!

"Smart people on the other hand are able to see though the media cloud and make their own decisions without the need to be cool. " Really?
I understand that many people who have rightfully earned the name elitist are drawn to Obama, but does that mean that being drawn to Obama makes us elitist? Where's the causal relationship here? I'd argue that there are plenty of conservative elitists too. And why is it that educated people seem to be banned from natural or critical intelligence? I know many people who like Obama on his merits. And I'm sure there are plenty of McCain supporters who would turn up their noses at his likely feigned interest in NASCAR. Oversimplification is not the answer here.
My comment was in response to the writer who said “as an Obama supporter I am glad to see those with education being drawn to him”. He implies that those with an education are more intelligent and Obama supporters. That IMHO, is an elitist attitude.

His comment was about the dude from California who puts Obama as the eighth thing people must have in order to be cool. It’s pretty sad that a presidential campaign might be decided by people who did it because it was cool and it makes them look hip.

So where does that leave me and others like me (educated or not), who oppose Obama based on the issues. Since the writer left it open, we will lay claim to being smarter and definitely harder working. Why do I think we are smarter and harder working? To oppose Obama solely on the issues requires a little research and the ability to understand their impact.

We have our own opinions we don’t just follow the crowd, like the writer to whom my response was directed.

BTW, if by merit you mean his stance on issues, I have yet to meet the Obama supporter who can academically support his stance on most issues and they consider themselves educated.

Tom,
You HAVE met at least one person who can "academically support his stances", you are just too stoooopid to realize it. Shoe Wearing Kentuckian would eat you for lunch in a debate on the "issues". In fact, SWK and I and so many others are in fact, voting for Obama ON THE ISSUES while you and your ilk simply harp on the usual..."empty suit, no experience etc. etc. & all the typical Rush Limbaugh BS". Any of us could trash you in a debate on "the issues" because you're only issue is that you "think" (and I use the term loosely) that you are "smarter" when your posts show how sadly mistaken you are. Obama beats the remaining candidates soley on his merits, his stances and his ideas. You have nothing to offer but self-agrandizing BS. See you in Nov.(That's when the election is.)

Why is this spotlight being shone on only one group of people? The truth is that liberal whites would not vote for a black conservative but there is not endless commentary about that.
Like duh. Yeah, I'm a liberal white. I wouldn't vote for a conservative of ANY color. I would vote for a liberal regardless of color. So you see? For me, it's about what the candidate stands for, not the color of the candidate's skin, or which kind of genitalia the candidate happens to have. Of course, conservatives can't see past color even when they pretend it's not about color.

Without corporations there are no jobs. Having been in senior roles of a couple of large organizations, I can state based on personal experience that there is no great conspiracy to hold people down.

Companies are motivated by fiduciary duties to shareholders and that is part of the capitalist system our economy is based on. Shareholders (which includes a large percentage of the US population) expect a return on their investment. The only alternative is a planned society and we've seen how well that works. Ask anybody from a communist country which is a better system.

Keep treating them like "evil" beings and they will go to where they are wanted and take their jobs with them. If we keep chasing them out, what will be left? A bunch of poor people with no hope.
