The white vs. off-white election

I wonder how long it will be before Mr. Lander gets a legal notice from some lawyer representing some offended party (who hasn't read the contents of his website). That's just the way it is these days.

"Effete nattering nabobs of negativism" haven't gone away; they just control the media. If Bama doesn't watch it and get to know these people (and earn their respect), they'll hand his lunch to McBush.

1 Yes, Wright, who Obama has now denounced after making a very good speech stating his view on racial relations in the US. You should watch it - it's very good. Of course, you'll happily ignore that McCain has openly accepted endorsement from Hagee, who is an anti-Catholic, misogynistic, homophobe. Nice double standards. I want the President to run the US who is best for the job and won the election. That Obama has been 'chosen' by black racists is as irrelevant to me as that McCain has been chosen by Hagee. "I found solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race" is not actually from 'Dreams of My Father', but rather from a conservative review of it, available here: http://www.amconmag.com/2007/2007_03_12/featu... But please do carry on lying and saying whatever you damn please about a candidate without checking the facts. It took me two seconds on google to find out the providence of that 'solace' quote. Are you just too stupid to use google, or what? I'd take out all your other falsehoods but frankly as a 'normal sane person' I have better things to do. Use google and find out yourself - it's not difficult. |

Was this really a colum written in the Tribune? If they changed the wording to black and blacky would they get away with it? I'll bet dawn would be one of the first to start crying. This is garbage.

You should run for President!!!!!

Why is this spotlight being shone on only one group of people? The truth is that liberal whites would not vote for a black conservative but there is not endless commentary about that.

we used to be white, but that was during the civil war, wwI, wwII, vietnam, ect. we still honor our ancestors from the civil war that are buried on the mountain farm up behind the house, on the point, overlooking the holler.

This is a very insightful article. I too feel a shift in the demographics of white voters, and as an Obama supporter I am glad to see those with education being drawn to him. Conversely, I shake my head at Hillary who courts a shrinking section of people who are fickle at best in their support for her dying campaign.

If the author of this article represents the views of her candidate, I don't think anyone should vote for him. This is the very definition of elitist and classist. No better than racist and sexist.

I have to ask is the writer black because it sounds as if he has a hate issue. I was brought
up to treat all people with respect, black, white, yellow or even green. Because inside we are the same, and a collage degree doesn,t make you smart, that's evident by reading the writers garbage. |

This article is assanine. It's much akin to saying there are black people... and then there are the "n" words? wtf? As a black person I take offense to the above sentence. Do any white people feel the same about this article? What I am reading here is that if you aren't some how part of the mainstream, then you are not really "white" .This writer seems amazed that just because someones the same color, they dont necessarily share the same values and experiences...( that's called stereotyping). This is something minorities have been dealing with for years ( but I thought all of you loved __________ fill in the blank: rap, to dance etc.), I guess it's come full circle. It reminds me of a fairly recent program I saw on t.v. where a guy was arguing his point that there should be two categories for african americans.... light skinned and dark skinned.. because according to him, the two groups didn't receive equal treatment ( if you were of the lighter skinned persuasion, you were generally treated better by whites and blacks alike) I could go on and on.

It's very interesting that we now embrace the same sort of racism that we once sought to defeat. Is it acceptable to perpetuate the idea of "white privilege"? When whites don't measure up to a certain standard including a college degree and middle-class status they are regarded as "off-white" or "white trash". These terms ostensibly suggest that education and class are set aside for whites only. How racist and dangerous is that? I find these terms entirely demeaning to Black Americans, who continue to be regarded based on their skin tone rather than the content of their character or contribution to society.

Ms. Daum's insightful article addresses something that I can clearly see both in KY where I grew up and now live, and in GA where I attended college and grad school. Those of us (by this terminology) deemed white in predominantly off-white areas find ourselves in the uncomfortable position of trying to defend ourselves from the assumptions of those in more clearly defined "white" majority areas while also attempting to make it clear that we do not embrace the genuinely offensive ideas of many of our neighbors. It's a difficult balancing act, but I'm afraid that the more we fight to reject association with the "off-white" undesirables, the more we contribute to the artificial or superficial boundaries that keep people with probably very similar economic interests from uniting into a powerful force. Economics, in my opinion, has long been a more powerful separator than race, but as long as the core of power is to remain white and wealthy, racial divisiveness will be exploited and exacerbated by the elitist ideology that confines people to their categories - or if need be, creates new ones. So...now what?
