WASHINGTON — Barring a dramatic change in the political landscape over the next three weeks, Democrats appear headed toward a decisive victory on Election Day that would give them broad power over the federal government. ADVERTISEMENT The victory would send Barack Obama to the White House and give him larger Democratic majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate — and perhaps a filibuster-proof margin there. That could mark a historic realignment of the country's politics on a scale with 1932 or 1980, when the out party was given power it held for a generation, and used it to transform government's role in American society. Obama, a 47-year-old first-term senator from Illinois , is now well positioned to win the Electoral College . He's comfortably holding most of the "blue" states that went for Democrats Al Gore and John Kerry in past elections, polls show, and he's gaining momentum to take away several "red" states that have voted Republican in recent elections, including Florida , Ohio , Colorado and Virginia . The Democrats are also widely expected to take big gains in House and Senate races. Like Obama, they're reaching deep into once solid Republican territory. Even such stalwarts as North Carolina Sen. Elizabeth Dole and Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell , the Senate Republican leader, could be in jeopardy. Building on the Democrats' sweeping wins two years ago when they seized control of both chambers of Congress , big gains this year would be reminiscent of the Republican gains in 1978 and 1980 that delivered "the Reagan Revolution."Comments

1 John McCain's America to me looks like the America that I grew up in. It reminds me of Ronald Reagon's vision of America. Their America and mine was an America strongly moving forward, looking to the future, optimistic despite hardship and imperfections. It is an America that concerns itself with its own safety and vital national interests with self determination while at the same time proceeding with complete attention and concern for her neighbors and allies. Years ago we weren't so afraid to call evil by its name and address our threats directly and publically even while holding out a strong hand for diplomacy, but diplomacy on the grounds of the recognition of human rights and freedoms. Barack Obama seems more concerened with our standing amongst European intelligencia and cultural centers in foreign nations and governing bodies. But finally, to go back to my original premise. These days about America, I don't feel so secure as I once did. I hope that we are not heading in the bleak direction we appear to be. If America seems rather unsettled these days to Barack Obama he should understand that it is because we feel that we have something to lose. We are being misunderstood. I would like to think that optimism will prevail. But I believe that it is more than simply being caught up in the emotions of the election season. I and many others simply don't subscribe to an Obama vision of America. For me, and my experiences in my life as an American, John McCain's vision of America, looks a lot like my America. And God bless that America! |

2 Also, back then, our government kept us in line through fear of communists and fear of nuclear annihilation from the Soviets. That America and that world are long in the past. This is an entirely new era and republicans like Reagan and Bush Sr. are not intellectually equipped to deal with it. Your America sucks. It's most certainly not the America I want to see return. |

1 Then, let's go down to Latin American and kill many, many innocent people. And other dirty politics. War on drugs, my @ss!! Try, "Let's have our cut." Just say no, Nancy... The list goes on and on and on. But go ahead folks and put on your blinders because YOUNG America is smarter than you ever were--despite the half-assed educational system you left us--and are supporting and voting for Obama. And, let's tell some more (and more meaningful) truth: You people just cannot STAND the idea of a person of color in the "white house." Get over it; get over yourselves. This is the 21st century, and we're taking America back!!

1 What a great post that is!!!! I just can not understand why voters would vote to put another Bush follower in the White House. Haven't you folks had enough of the Bush's and McCain? My gosh, economically we are bankrupt, highest unemployment, do you want bread lines, soup lines like we had when Herbert Hoover, Republican, was President? Do you remember that depression??? I do. That McCain Supporter amuses me no end, my laughs for the day reading her blah, blah, blah and more blah. The GOP is scared to death; and they are using any tatic possible to try and destroy Obama's rep; but IT WILL NOT WORK. Their swift boat tactics defeated John Kerry as President, so they probably figure this fodder may work again; but IT WILL NOT WORK. Obama/Biden our next President & VP get used to it you dyed in the wool Republicans. |

1 And the hard-workers around the country that have lost their jobs because of the current economic crisis? How about nose-diving Pensions? They must be lazy, too, then? Lazy people. That explains it. And here I thought it had something to do with De-Regulation and the unchecked Free Market System. Silly me. |

1 Don't mind "dumbo" everyone, he is obviously living in an imaginary america where the only hard workers are those lazy ass fat cats that make millions of dollars off of the work of the middle class...lol! sorry but the rest of us live in reality and the truth is that most Americans are hard workers and all Americans weather you notice it or not dumbo are losing out, which is a very big PROBLEM!! so you can keep living in fantasy land until the day you retire and findout you have no 401k and the U.S. dollar is worth less than the mexican peso, all because you voted another money grubbing, all for the rich, none for the poor and middle-class, greedy moron Republican! America is Nottingham and its about time Robin Hood came out of sherwood forest to save us from Sherrif Bush/McCain type tax tyranny! -"I am Saddam McCain and I approve this message!" |

1 I and my spouse are not lazy we work several jobs and still cannot make ends meet with today's prices on fuel, food, insurance and many other things that have rose from the financial crisis. To call the workers here lazy is a stupid and insulting remark, you should change your name to Dumbo as suggested. Also McCain is for the rich and will continue to be, he is like a Chameleon, changing his colors to blend in. Look at his latest maneuver now he is sorry for all the hatred his negativity caused. A vote for McCain is a vote for disaster, he has erratic tendencies that could cause irreputable damage to realation with foreign countries and within our own. |

1 You got it right on the "money" there my friend...lol! The republican party is all about personal profits, everything else they stand for as traditionalists is bunch of crap used to control those below the upper class that won't profit from their administrative decisions! like that fake vision of a an all white christian america where gays should not marry, a woman shouldn't have the right to choose "abortion" witht no rights to her own body, blacks, hispanics, and other races must remain minorities, and terrorists are at the gates planning a full scale invasion so we better be afraid of anyone differant from "us" mentality! its all bull shit and just what the hay-seed hicks in many "Republican states" need to hear to win them over! only now more and more people are seeing through it and finally seeing how truly un-American the republican ideal really is! so i say go-go Obama, keep those conservatives pricks on the run! -"I am Saddam McCain and I approve this message" |
