It's just another anti-people measure by the Republicans. They try and put lipstick on a pig, but at the end of the day, it's about ethnic/cultural elitism. Why otherwise is it so hard for them to acknowledge any positive thing the illegal immigrants contribute with. For all the hard work they've done (for decades), they're still referred to as unwelcome invaders. That's not about money.

Heatch Shuler is NOT a Republican.
He is a Democrat. Do not confuse the readers. The SAVE act is supported and sponsored by Democrats in Congress.

I would not expect anything else from the city of Los Angeles, run by a mayor and a city council who bow to the illegals.

Is it any wonder?

Los Angels County:

10% of Los Angeles County residents are illegal aliens (the highest percentage of county residents in the country)

Illegal aliens cost the county greater than one billion dollars per year in taxpayer costs, not counting education.
Breakdown:
$444 million for welfare and food stamps
$400 million for health care
$220 million for correctional services, law enforcement and other public safety costs

New statistics from the Department of Public Social Services reveal that illegal aliens and their families in Los Angeles County collected over $37 million in welfare and food stamp allocations in November 2007, which is up $3 million dollars from September.

Children of illegal aliens receive 25% of welfare and food stamp money.

Right! they suck our welfare program dry,but send 20 Billion dollars a year back to Mexico!

Source: Inter-American Development Bank, March 2006 report,“Remittance 2005”. Mexico remains the largest recipient of remittances, at over US$20 billion, followed by Brazil and Columbia which for the first time reached over US$6 and US$4 billion respectively. Central America and the Dominican Republic combined to reach over US$11 billion; and the Andean countries totaled almost US$9 billion.

http://www.iadb.org/mif/v2/files/guemez_remit...

As much as 50% of remittances are unreported. As published in the Development Prospect Group Briefing #3, "This amount only reflects transfers through official channels. Econometric analysis suggests that unrecorded flows through informal channels may add 50 percent or more to recorded flows. Including these unrecorded flows, the true size of remittances, is larger than foreign direct investment flows and more than twice as large as official aid received by developing countries."

If workplace enforcement was ever imposed in LA, Tony V and the rest of the reconquista crowd would end up out of office. They can't have that. They have to keep up their lifestyles, you know.

"It costs California about $800 million to imprison illegal immigrants, Lockhart said."

Why not use the imprisoned illegal criminals to build the border fence?

What part of "illegal" don't these politicians understand? Illegal immigratns our costing us billions, sending there money home to Mexico and driving down wages. Have we lost our mind? If you are tried of this nonsense as me, please call your representative and demmand a border fence, attrition through enforcement, and denial of any social assistance to illegals.

Greg Smith for President. What a set of Balls to vote for what is right for Americans in a city that has more illegal immigrants than any other city in the USA. The story starts of with "Tapping the hot-button issue of immigration". That is a joke. It should read "Tapping the hot-button of illegal immigration". Americans are proud that every year we admit more legal immigrants any country in the world. Illegal immigration is destroying great cities, one after another.

"Zine, who chairs the immigration task force for the organization, said many of the people who are now considered illegal immigrants came to the U.S. legally on student or work permits and have subsequently been caught up in changes in the law."

This comment is ridiculous. This is government at work for you --the U.S. citizen. Our elected officials continue to appeal to the illegal immigrants while dissing the U.S. citizens. All 11 of the pols should recalled.

25 to 50% of illegals are "Visa overstays." That just shows what a wonderful job our gov't does. Now they are letting people in with a 3 min interview.

For years, those of us who have been demanding action on the illegal alien invasion of our communities, have been told over and over again that “there is nothing that can be done at the local level because immigration is a federal issue”. Now, with policies being considered which would actually enforce our national immigration policy, open border groups supported by local politicians of sanctuary jurisdictions cry “FOUL”. This nonsense must stop. If you accept the notion that immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility, quit griping when they decide to actually enforce the law. We are where we are today due to lack of enforcement both on the border and across the interior of our nation. ENFORCE IMMIDGRATION LAW!
