We need to collect the cost of the war from the Iraqi's, money or oil, and start developing a way to end foreign dependence on the Middle east. We should drill in the U.S, and set up many refineries, but sooner or later, that will run out also. How much money does Iraq need to rebuild?

Here's a quick fix: immediately put price controls on the amount that the oil companies are charging us for gasoline, start looking to take back all that money we gave them for making refineries that they never used and just put to their bottom lines and profits, and start getting TOUGH with OPEC!

the democraps are to blame - they lied to all of America again!!!!

they promised to get us out of the war if elected - they lied!
they promised to lower gas prices it elected - they lied!

If fact, obama & hillary have voted to fund & to extend the war on every senate vote since they could vote!
And obama won't even give some of our tax money back with the gas holiday! A few bucks every fill up would help! But racist obama won't even give us a few pennies and take it out of his greedy hands! Wait if elected - obama will raise taxes to new record highs!!!!

Think about those few bucks the next time you are stuck in traffic behind construction and 15 workers are standing around watching a guy painting lines on the freeway!

They should start taxing the oil companies more aggressively. That would teach them a lesson or two.

There is no oil supply problem - Our oil reserves are increasing, and there are no lines at the pumps. US oil use is actually decreasing.

There is no refinery shortage - we are building new ones, and the existing ones are not running at capacity.

What we do have is a very weak dollar, unregulated futures speculation, and hugely profitable oil companies. Could Bush help? Probably if he cared, though congress would have to weigh in on taxation and regulation issues.

As for Hillary and McCain's gas tax proposal, it is a disaster. After the price goes down 15 cents the first week, demand will go up, and the price will keep creeping back to at least where it started. Meanwhile, our transportation funds are running dry, road workers are out of jobs, and oil companies are still raking in big profits. This will save us very little money.

The argument "but its MY money" needs to be countered with "but do you use roads?" Maintaining roads is one of government's most useful functions, and gas tax is very appropriate - if you are using gas, you're probably using the roads.

You are right. Taxing the oil companies will only drive the prices up. Regulation is rarely a good thing, but needed with big oil. If we just utilize the refineries we have now, and start drilling in Alaska, we could see relief sooner than we may think. Any taxes should go for transportation-related items. Our cost at the pump could be cut AT LEAST in half if we do these simple things.

I have heard that drilling in Alaska is a relatively slow fix. And, as I said in an earlier post, we really don't have supply problems at present (though the oilmen want you to think this is the case). It would be smartest to move away from oil altogether as quickly as possible. Though that is certainly not a quick fix either, high gas prices will push development and acceptance of new technology faster than any regulation ever could.
