Sherlayne, exactly :) repetitive prayer is very silly indeed.

Vain repetition is spoken against in the gospel. Jesus calls it paganism.

All those HMs. Mary must be busy listening to those millions of prayers and blessing millions of people. The poor lady must be run off her feet :D

Was doing some research on the reformation. I never knew this, but the reformation started before the reformation.

John Wycliffe 1328-84 from England preached anticlerical and biblically centered reforms. He translated the Bible into English. Attacked the papacy and church hierarchy.

He was declared a heretic and after his death, his body dug up and burned.

Where is the vanity in silent prayer? I'll tell you one thing. The Holy Spirit does not plop its angelic butt down on the end of my bed and tell me its life story. It waits patiently 'til the repetition becomes mindless then sneaks in unawares and gives me hints as to what's really going on.

How does prayer work for you?

I've been following your posts and I think they're helpful, but I've never seen the point of "repetitive prayer" - you know, like 20 Hail Mary's in a row.
Check out Matthew 26: 32, 42, 44
Check out Revelation 4:8
Check out Luke 18 1-8

Praying the Rosary is not vain.

IMO you should consider what is 'vain' and what is not in these scriptures you must be referring to and exactly what Jesus said.

Hi Nettie,

You appear to have stumbled unto another example of John the Revelator simply copying Hebrew apocalypse.

Isaiah 6:2-3
Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

Revelation 4:8-9
And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, LORD God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever.

If you don't pray yourself, why do you criticize those that do?

I assume you mean devout Catholics. How do you know whether or not they're 'devout'? Isn't that God's business, not yours?

And by the way the olive tree still represents Israel (Romans 11), not Rome nor Martin Luther. Salvation is from the Jews (John 4:22)

God doesn't care what you want. He cares what you petition in prayer.

I don't think you're following the "discussion". Barry is saying that nowhere in Scripture does it address ashes on the forehead as part of repentance and so Ash Wednesday is against Scripture and is of pagan origin. I posted multiple references in Scripture to ashes being associated with repentance. Barry still says it's not from Scripture because the ashes are only put on the forehead on Ash Wednesday, in other words, we aren't rolling around in ashes and spreading them all over our bodies, as the examples in Scripture (although one passage does speak of putting ashes on the head).
My point to Barry was to show him how ridiculous he's being by demanding the ashes be put on us, or used, in the exact same way as in Scripture....covering our bodies. If he drives a car to worship, or goes to a church using electricity, or heat or ac, then he is not worshiping exactly the way they did in Scripture.
The Amish still do things that way...why not the baptists, if he is demanding the CC sticking so strictly to how things were done in Scripture?
Having the ashes put on our foreheads, instead of covering our whole bodies, is NOT CHANGING THE MESSAGE of what is represented by the ashes. But barry insists we are wrong and we're doing something pagan.
maybe since the "custom" was for folks to dress in sackcloth and doing the ashes thing, maybe since y'all don't do the sackcloth was what he meant..hhaa but on a serious note, some of the commands given in scripture does allow some "liberty". for example the churches were instructed to appoint elders/deacons to each congregation, BUT scripture did not tell them HOW to appoint them once men who met the qualifications were found.the men could have been found by recommendation, drawing straws, etc scripture does not specify how to find the men. just as I also pointed out when Christ gave the great commission he told them to go and teach the gospel. He left it to their discretion of HOW to GO, whether walk, take the bus or whatever. I think sometimes folks can discect things too much.Just like scripture told of dressing in sackcloth and doing the ashes thing, scripture did not tell how to sit, where to set, etc.
