The child poverty rate rose during the recession in 1 of every 5 counties across the nation, the U.S. Census Bureau said today.

The increase in poverty between 2007 and 2010 was especially pronounced in the nationís largest school systems, where 96 of the top 100 districts reported growth in the number of poor children, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Why would you blame Obama for the results of Reagan - Bush II smoke & mirrors economics.

Poverty and ruin is the direct result of GOP borrow and spend, and refusal to regulate amoral corporations.

More funding=more resources. Federal funds are more accessible to schools with Title 1 status and these additional funds help with teacher pay, classroom supplies, technology, etc. This report is really not surprising.

So it's the old "well the handouts are just simply running low" "we just can't afford to give these freeloaders anymore help" and "yes major global corporations with record profits need those tax breaks to create jobs." " The poor will just have to suffer or get a job.....losers."
That's sarcasm btw

"More funding" like hundreds of billions in TARP spending? Or "more funding" like a few millions for children's innoculations?

In this case, I'd have to say the latter.:) However, we all know that every little bit helps. That's why these monies are so precious to the teachers who would otherwise be spending money out-of-pocket to provide a meaningful education

How funny to come back to Topix and read this after browsing stories about Paulson in 2008 tipping hedge funds on Freddie & Fannie's demises, the pending dissolution of the European economic union, and Chinese exports declining 20-40% in two months as global consumer spending shrivels.
Most Topix posters care less about education than the fine print ingredients in their pork rinds, 10 minutes of a NASCAR race, and whatever Bachmann last said in the press, combined.
God help our fine nation if we turn our backs on the future of our children and theirs.

Last Saturday we had tires put on the car and we stood outside the store while we waited enjoying the afternoon. A young woman approached us and said "I live across the street. I need food for my baby."

She didn't have a baby with her, but across the street is a pay-by-the-week hotel that is filled with transients.

We told her we couldn't help her but that she should call social services. With that she went on her way to accost someone else.

I don't know if she had a baby or not, but if she did it angered me to think that this stupid girl would drag that poor child through her misfortunes with her.

Examining the possible scenerios. If she were married and in desperate need where are her parents and his parents? Most parents would never allow their child and grandchild to have to beg in the streets. What about brothers and sisters? Grandparents? Isn't there someone in their families somewhere who could help them out during a job loss?

What mother or father would allow their situation to get to a point where their child's hunger becomes a need to beg? If she was already in dire economic hardship before she got pregnant, what woman would bring a child into that, knowing if can't be taken care of properly?

I would be working 2 or 3 jobs. And dad would be doing the same. That child's welfare would be our first priority. But these days a baby is given less consideration than a dog. The child is born from a lack of planning and responsibility and dragged around the parent(s) chaotic life with no more care or concern than if he or she were carrying around a old sweater.

It's time to put a stop to the sexual irresponsibility in this country that is adding considerably to our "poverty" rates.

And we all know that if McCain and Palin had won the election everyone in America would now have a living wage job, there would be no illegal immigration, the wars would be over, the economy would be soaring, angels would be trumpeting, rainbows would cover the sky, and we'd all be living in the land of sunshine and harmony.

the obama administration WITH a super majority in congress did NOTHING to help the unenployment, they made things worse for 2 years, and YOU'RE bitching because 1/2 of 1/3 of the government hasn't been able to turn that around in 10 months.

you're an idiot.

Yep, that legislation to make the rich richer. That legislation that wouldn't do a damn thing for anyone else. Why you kissing up to the ultra-wealthy who run the show. You're not one and never will be.
