This is my second year learning English and the first thing I learn was to always capitalize the word English. Hopefully, you don't get offended, but I am just trying to help you. You Americans need to step on! China is not seeing you guys as no competition or as a potential threat. You guys, huh?~laughs~ what are you ...from Ohio?

Negative consequences for infractions are swift and usually long-term and, occasionally, permanent. Positive consequences take a long time to acquire through self-control, application, discipline and dedication. Most (not all) parents today seem to have the idea that everyone is responsible for their kids' upbringing except them. They drop them off at the Malls and let them loiter. They sue the school systems for punishing their child, but then nag and moan because that same school system isn't raising their kid right. Well? Which is it? Which one do you want? Make a decision and stick with it. I have zero respect for the majority of today's parents and i don't think your kid is cute in the restaurant at 10:00 p.m. when i've gone out in hopes of a nice dinner. Your kid isn't cute when he's throwing a screaming fit anywhere. Pick him up and LEAVE. Your kid isn't cute when he spits at strangers or at you. If teachers and others come to you over and over, telling you that your kid is an a$$pain, then you need to stop defending that kid and start listening to the people who are brave enough to say something to you. Why? Because your kids is probably an a$$pain!!! And it is because YOU made him that way!!! Spot on! ~salute~

If you don't like the term KIDS, go somewhere else where you think you can dictate words. Try thinking about the subject!

merlin13 wrote: <quoted text> Not sure I understand your point ESL doesn't mean students learn in their language - they learn English. Most students have one to two years to master a language before they are tested in English. It takes 5-7 to be proficient at an academic level in a second language. Also many non-english speaking adults are trying to learn and master english so they can get better jobs - it's not always easy though if you work a few jobs and make little money - I used to teach Adult immigrants who would come whenever they could for free english classes. So many people are talking down about the educational system in this country. Maybe they are right because I haven't seen many logical or intelligent arguments here. ESL classes are taught in Spanish and are supplemented by a few, if any, English only classes, like Social Studies or Science. ESL students, like SpEd students, are assumed to be incapable of learning unless everything is 'dumbed down' for them. That is why there are many bright, capable students in high school reading and writing in English at a 2nd or 3rd grade level, if they are even reading and writing in English at all. ESL programs are a disservice to our non-English speaking students. Total immersion, as soon as they enter school, is the most effective and economic way to teach English.(or any other language)

we do need loving and caring teachers in order for our children to learn and grow. I do agree that parents need to do their jobs at home also, teachers can't do everything!

They would almost have to shoot their teacher in order to flunk a class. They can be as dumb as a door nail (sorta like Al Gore) and pass with flying colors. No need to speak the language of the land, they can speak their jive, ebonics, mexican, vietnamese, etc. and receive top honors. Ah, right......Mexican is not a language. Spanish is a language.....Racism is stupidity......Or as you say "dumb as a doornail".

"President" Hussein Obama is so interested in setting up a dictatorship yet you think he gives a rat's rhyme about kids? You're an idiot. The only thing he's going to care about with kids is how fast they can be indoctrinated. Go read up on your "President" Hussein Obama, pull your head out of your butt, and face facts. You must have multiple personalities. The other post about parent responsibility was great! This one shows you don't think for yourself. You are being brainwashed by Rush, Shaun & friends. Why don't you go to Obama's website and look for yourself at what he intends on doing and how he is going to do it. I don't let anyone make up my mind for me. If I need to make a judgment on people. I seek them out for myself. I don't let anyone do it for me. The way you formed your reply shows you are being led. It's too bad. your probably a Bush follower too, you hated McCain until Rush told you it was OK to accept him.Sad

Why is this even news?
This has been a given for the past fifteen years or so.
Kids get passed along who can barely read or write, because schools are deathly afraid of being sued for keeping these "mentally challenged" children back.

Schools educate (as in knowledge). Parents prepare their kids for life. period. But, as we all know, most parents these days are more absorbed with their jobs or social life to spend any REAL time helping their children understand the world. This topic has been beat to death. Schools are a a key, but not the door to life experiences....the family is.

Yes we parents have to teach our kids. You can't make someone else do it, especially public systems that lack funding and have no authority to reprimand students. The future is rather grim, I fear. The American way of life has been sold out to the Chinese. The oil situation is changing our habits, and increasing our cost of living since we did not develop efficient transportation when we should have. Our kids' education is key to solving these problems. This is no time to encourage or allow mediocrity and apathy. We send our kids to private school. It's expensive, and don't think we can afford it! It is budgeted in. It's "instead of" a luxury home or nice new cars. And of course on top of that we pay our share of taxes which pay for the public schools we (personally) don't need. But it's worth it. Our kids will succeed. Because to make it in America now and even more so in the future you better be rich.

Again, sorry to drop truth on you, but I do not watch television, nor do I listen to the opinion(s) of those who work hard to sway people, regardless of their party affiliation. I make use of the Internet to search out information on my own. For instance, read what BHO has to say here: http://www.cultureandmediainstitute.org/artic... . Please pay close attention to how this was handled by the major news stations here and, actually, the media, in general. I've been to BHO's website. If anyone is being led, it is you. Anyone can make a website and say anything they want to say on it, but that neither makes it truth nor does it make it possible. BHO has an agenda, a very strong hidden agenda, and anyone who is too blinded to see it is to be pitied. No, I am not a Bush follower. No, I am not now, nor have I ever been, a McCain follower. Not crazy about HRClinton, either. May I ask you something? What do you think about this quote: "... a light will shine through that window, a beam of light will come down upon you, you will experience an epiphany ... and you will suddenly realize that you must go to the polls and vote for Obama."
