New Agency Proposed to Oversee Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae By STEPHEN LABATON Published: September 11, 2003 "...The Bush administration's proposal, which was endorsed in large part today by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, would not repeal the significant government subsidies granted to the two companies. And it does not alter the implicit guarantee that Washington will bail the companies out if they run into financial difficulty; that perception enables them to issue debt at significantly lower rates than their competitors. Nor would it remove the companies' exemptions from taxes and antifraud provisions of federal securities laws. The proposal is the opening act in one of the biggest and most significant lobbying battles of the Congressional session. Significant details must still be worked out before Congress can approve a bill. Among the groups denouncing the proposal today were the National Association of Home Builders and Congressional Democrats who fear that tighter regulation of the companies could sharply reduce their commitment to financing low-income and affordable housing. ''These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis,'' said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee.''The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.'' Representative Melvin L. Watt, Democrat of North Carolina, agreed. ''I don't see much other than a shell game going on here, moving something from one agency to another and in the process weakening the bargaining power of poorer families and their ability to get affordable housing,'' Mr. Watt said. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html...

The debate was of battle between intelligence (Obama) and the old out of date republican (McCain). It's time for intelligence in the White House. Oh and lets avoid discussing Palin as a VP or President.

Has nobody else noticed McCains creepy inability to make eye contact? not once for an hour and a half, not even when they shook hands. Is that hatred? rage? fear? Personaly it gave me the creeps.

I'm just glad the debate hapened. How can McCain justify the last 8 years? That's an incredulous prposition. There is absolutely nothing to defend, cherish, promote or esteem from teo terms of Repub governance. Obama has got so much he can pick from to discredit the Repubs simply from the top of his head. A history lesson from the last 8 yrs is a complete embarrassment for them. America went straight into disaster mode the moment G. Bush was voted in and he responded by going to the golf green.

The right judgment from a commander in chief would have been not to go to war in the first place. He would have saved over 4000 American lives, hundreds of thousands of Iraqi lives, and trillions of dollars which he could have used on education, health care, jobs, etc.. Obama is the only one to repair the broken relationship between America and the rest of the world. No country likes and respects U.S.A anymore. I can't believe how the Bush Administration can get away with what they've done. How can anyone with brain think of voting republican again? Don't you know McCain has been agreed with Bush over 90 percent? Haven't the Republican President done enough damage to your once great country?

It shows a lack of confidence and weakness in his character, not a good sign at all and not someone I would consider to be honest. OBAMA/BIDEN 08

Obama not only faced McCain when speaking to him, he also acknowledged the television viewers as well as the moderator. he and Michelle also walked TO McCain and his wife to congratulate them and shake their hands. not once did i see McCain make even a small attempt to pay the same respect. as an undecided voter, McCain really let me down because i wanted him to also address his concerns for us hard-working middle class americans. also, a true "experienced" person on the job shouldn't have to be on defence unless the new guy...

You could say Obama won because he obviously didn't lose outright. For him at this point, a tie was as good as a win. All he had to do was make sure that Hellraiser II (McCain) didn't have a senior moment, and come charging across the stage in an erratic display of this delusional hero thing again. Somebody needs to keep an eye on McCain; he may be snacking on his own poop again... Carry a jar of baby food with you Barack just in case he lunges due to low blood sugar.

I noticed that too, it was if McBush 3 did not have the courtesy to be courteous. He was a disgrace and tried to hobble the time where I was shouting at Jim through the TV to let the other guy clear up McBush 3's lies and misfacts. If we want a bully and a not so smart one at that, then McBush 3 is the one but I want someone who I can trust because he is intelligent, smart, and will unite this country and repair the damage this country has suffered around the world. Only one candidate was intelligent and knowledgeable and presidential and I look forward to election day.

I was very impressed on Obamas behavior during the debate. Not once did he do the turkey neck thing nor did he grab his package after making a statement

Come on lets face it folks….. McCain made Barack Husien Obama look like a 5th grader repeating McCains words and agreeing with McCain 8 times. Can Husien - I mean Obama stand on his own to feet with some meat instead of remembering lines that were written before he ever stepped on the stage. He is a GREAT pre made speech giver and a high school debater!!!! Just what the country needs - someone that doesn’t have experience, speaking of war and hasn’t been over to these countries but Iraq once, full of non substance with an attitude.. Don’t allow us to have 4 years of Obama and Biden that cannot even tell you who the president was in the Great Depression!!!!!- VOTE McCAIN & PALIN FOR 2008!!!!!!
