Daley promises to fight to keep handgun ban

Mayor Richard Daley was adamant Friday about Chicago's intention to defend its handgun ban in court, despite news that a second area suburb was likely to repeal its ordinance next week.

Mr Mayor are we deliberately trying to be dense here?
You said "that if the gun ban was overturned the city would need to consider other ways to protect emergency workers".
Isn't it extremely obvious that the ones that are going to harm your emergency workers ALREADY HAVE THE GUNS?
You have the gun ban in place now, I really doubt your streets could get anymore unsafe than they are now.
Give your law abiding citizens a chance to defend themselves because Chicagos finest is not up to the task!

Dick Daley is a dumb*ss.

The crack smoking criminals who have guns, are not trading them for gift cards. The silly ban would only prevent the law abiding citizens from self defense or at a minum the "feeling" of security in a city whos crime rate is out of control.

Down with little dick daley.

A class action suit is in order against Daley. Everyone who is a victim from gun violence after the supreme court made its decision should be included in this action.
What has barry"O" said about this issue? Oh thats right he is to busy running at the presidency for the last 1 1/2 years to care about the people of Illinois.

Great Daley is going to waste more of our tax dollars fighting a SUPREME COURT ruling. What does he have against law abiding citizens owning guns for defense in their homes? Obviously the criminals already have guns. How often has a firefighter went to the home of a citizen and been confronted by an armed homeowner? I can't believe the stuff that comes out of our mayor's mouth sometimes. He will say anything to push his agenda regardless of the law of the land. I guarantee Daley's fight against this ruling will cost us millions. Daley, how about using that money to hire more cops and get the illegal guns off of the street and leaving honest law-abiding gun owners alone?

Although I do not live in Chicago, I do not see the logic of the Mayor's comments about protecting the emergency workers. Here is my reasoning: Say I live in Chicago and I leagally own a handgun in my home and have a valid FOID card. Something happens and I need to call 911 for a heart attack for a family member. Now, being a responsible homeowner or renter with a job, car, 401k, etc and legal gun with my FOID card, why would I get in the way or endanger the emergency workers that respond to my house by using my gun? Bottom line is that most people that will legally own a handgun that live in Chicago will have something to lose (house, job, car, etc) if they break the law with their firearms. Why would a person who follows the law want to risk getting arrested with their gun? Why would any citizen who follows the law use their legal firearm to show force against an emergency worker? The people who follow the law have something to lose. The thugs have nothing to lose. That is why the ban doesn't work!
Now I am going to go out on a limb here but the thugs who carry firearms in Chicago now and in the future if the ban is lifted are already a danger to emergency workers. If the police and medics respond to a gang-related beating today, they can be pretty sure the victim may be armed.
The mayor is trying to keep his ban on handguns as long as he can. The thugs are going to have guns no matter how many laws there are. They don't care! It's not like they have to worry about a felony on their record preventing them from getting a skilled job! Why not let people that are responsible own guns? It may even bring down the crime. The stats speak for themselves. Allowing responsible citizens to arm themselves reduces crime. It's not like a responsible person will use their gun if someone looks at them wrong. Let's use some common sense here. Mr Mayor, do what is best for your good, responsible citizens!

Someone needs to tell Daley that the supreme court could care less about the blather that spews from his mouth. They will not reverse a ruling just because King Daley threw a tantrum. I was really looking forward to this court decision, if for no other reason just to see Daley become a bumbling, hysterical mess just like I thought he'd be.

His head is so far in the sand. I find it really hard to believe that anybody who would use a gun to ambush "first responders" has been waiting for the hand gun ban to be overruled before they go out and get a gun.

Richie you are losing it, and have been ever since you tore up Meigs Field at Midnight. Have you been having mini strokes, is your health ok? I wonder because the stammering and mumble bumble that comes from your lips is at times incoherent as well as nonsensical.
Your priorities are askew as well. A Childrens Museum, while children in your city die at alarming rates should not have been given the priority it was.
Your city is dangerous and frankly with your thought process, so are you.

Did I read Daleys remark correctly? Just because the Supreme Court says...Wow the great Daley answers to no one his actions will cost taxpayers millions of dollars, but thats OK guess which politically connected law firms will make all the money.Daley knows he is going to lose its all about his friends making lots of our cash.

So basically Mr Mayor is saying that if you own a handgun, you will use it on emergency workers. So does he think all responsible gun owners are that stupid? How insulting to the people who pay taxes to fund all of your corruption. Correct me if I am wrong but I don't see the Chicago suburbs complaing of their Police and Fire department members dealing with homeowners with guns all the time. Call me crazy but wouldn't the citizen just be happy help is there instead of blasting them? That is thug mentality - ruin everything. Does he really think people are that stupid? Other states have to be laughing at Chicago because the have a means to get a carry permit and they have nothing close to our gun issues. Doesn't that tell you something?

Daley went to Chicago public schools, didn't he?

This isn't about danger to emergency responders; he's just flustered and pulling something out of his butt. He just can't admit that he's wrong and he doesn't have complete control of his little kingdom.

I fully anticipate asking for a handgun for Christmas.

I do not think Daley understands what the word "Supreme" in Supreme Court means. It means that the decision is over. I don't think courts with the same justice lineup take too lightly to re hearing their recent decisions with a new name slapped on the front of the folder. If Chicago wants to keep its handgun ban, Mayor Daley should talk about a Constitutional Amendment, because it will be his only way of keeping his law. And while he's at it, he could take a few glances at the constitution to understand "how things work."
