Red Fire Ants Facing Killer Virus

“Eradication is not going to happen.”

Imported red fire ants have plagued farmers, ranchers and others for decades. Now the reviled pests are facing a bug of their own.

Researchers have pinpointed a naturally occurring virus that kills the ants, which arrived in the U.S. in the 1930s and now cause $6 billion in damage annually nationwide, including about $1.2 billion in Texas.

The virus caught the attention of U.S. Department of Agriculture researchers in Florida in 2002. The agency is now seeking commercial partners to develop the virus into a pesticide to control fire ants. Read more

Ants are members of the same Order as bees and wasps; Hymenoptera. They had better be darn sure that this virus can't spread to bees which are presently undergoing a possible viral crisis of their own. If they don't proceed with caution and testing first, future generations may never know the sweet taste of honey.

South Florida is loaded with these things.

Every 10 or 20 feet is a nest. They are carnivorous and will consume anything, including people and they have killed a lot of them.

Though they will cohabitate with a certain type cockroach. The queen really looks like a tumor.

These things originally came from Brazil on a banana boat.

Let them die, far to many of them, can easily afford a die off.

Three months? No way. Simply use a can of ant and roach killer. Knocks out a mound in a couple hours.

Let nature take its course. Fire ants are horrible. They are almost impossible to get rid of, and they are everywhere. And they are prolific. In no time, there will be millions of them. Good riddance!

These critters are just now beginning to invade western NC. Our church grounds are covered with mounds. I hope the virus works with no ill effects on the bees.

Perhaps this is what is happening to the missing honey bees as well? Like the Red Fire Ant, they are not native to North America.

Well, they have this tendency not to have ears.

They are currently working on a vibration/odor based language to communicate.

They can't seem to format --Free plane tickets to Brazil.--

Why don't we kill the ants in a reasonable way. This may be a great idea but it is worth making sure.

Yes execellent point, somehow I doubt they will bother to make sure of anything. Look at our food supply, pets dead, hogs, chickens, fish...wheat gluten was the label....is it in breads? pasta?
