Suicide of Death Row inmate underscores prolonged appellate process leading to delays

Jun 9, 2012 Full story: The Washington Post 55

California's automatic death penalty appeals take so long that the state's 723 condemned inmates are more likely to die of old age and infirmities - or kill themselves - than be put to death.

<quoted text>Your argument lacks merit, if a person is wrongfully accused of a crime, they not only need to be released, they need to be paid big money by the state.

And when they are not wrongfully accused

There are people in prison that had good childhoods and good parents. It is not always the parents fault. Anyone, including yourself, can end up in prison. You are not above being placed in prison or wrongfully accused or even given the death penalty due to faulty evidence. It happens. Yes, many people belong in prison and never need to get out but not everyone in there is a "bad" person. <quoted text>
That's just a very small percentage. Law enforcement usually gets the right guy.

The "downside" is that the almighty state was cheated of it's chance at dosing out "Justice". Funny thing,. isn't it? You or your family gets to be the victim (murdered) and the state gets to dispense it's "Justice" and you're supposed to be happy with that!

You might be surprised how large it is. Winning a case and having that boost to a person's status has become far more important than getting the right person in our society today. Thanks to all the great people who work to get the right person--but their number is shrinking in our society.

You're right. the blue code of silence, lawyers covering for each other, hiding evidence, a lot of the time they just want a conviction and some do not care if it is the right person or not. Not all of them (police and layers and judges are this way; but a lot are. It's hard to get proof because they protect themselves and each other.

It would be very hard to come up with honest statistics as Flowerchild above has told you the reason.

Did you know a person can go to prison for many years and the appointed lawyer never even hear the person's story? Locked away in jail, a person has no choice. I never knew we had this kind of law and order until I saw it for myself. The person locked away can be told not to talk about his case to family or friends. His calls and visits are monitored to assure this does not happen. The family has no idea what the true story is. This is what turned me around. It was close enough for me to realize it could be me and mine.

We all think we can hire a lawyer and be ok. What many don't realize is the cost of these lawyers. The prosecutors can add on charges whether true or not just to raise the lawyer's fee and make it more difficult to obtain legal representation. Is the family to sell their home and all of their possessions to try and save the person and then not know for sure if they can even trust the lawyer they have paid?

The problem is that those of us like you and I use to be are very trusting when we have never experienced this.

When it hits close to home, it is an eye-opener. Hopefully, your eyes will open before this happens to you.

On top of that, these same prosecutors sometimes try to go after the family to up the pressure to accept a plea deal in a weak case.

Just ask George Zimmerman........

THere are more evil creepy criminals running around then there are decent, normal law-abiding citizens....its just that they havent been caught...YET.

Drugs play a huge role in the crime rate. We need a zero tolerance attitude towards drugs/drug abuse, seal the Mexican border, impose death penalty for drug dealers, etc....these things will reduce crime significantly.

Poverty, lack of education is another major factor. Privatize our school system, get rid of the greedy teacher's union who protect shitty teachers and unnecessary DOE bureaucrats that prevent funds from reaching the classroom!!

Actually, you both got it wrong, the state is the victim in a violation of its laws. So, you partially got it right in that the state is denied it's justice when when someone commits suicide as in this case.

Then you are mainly a democrat by your statements. You want big government to go around using big power to kill people. You might even be a commie or at least the same mentality of the "occupy" movement, a mere anarchist.

Idiot, saving taxpayer money by eliminating jails is NOT a democrat policy. Killing criminals is NOT a democrat policy...

Why do you condone the torture and killing of innocent citizens by lawless thugs?
