I don't remember marriage being reserved solely for Christians, either. Such history and beliefs were integrated into the U.S. Constitution with the passing of the Bill of Rights containing the First Amendment. The clause of the First Amendment that adopted the founders' principles of separation of church and state and freedom of religion is known as the Establishment Clause. It states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Separation_of_ch... "Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man & his god, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of separation between church and state. " -- Thomas Jefferson, letter to the Danbury Baptist Association in 1802 Unfortunately for your position, the weight of the scientific evidence indicates genetic and epigenetic factors (during fetal development) most likely account for determining sexual orientation. Here are two of several dozen recent citations from peer-reviewed scientific publications: Hum Genet. 2006 Feb;118(6):691-4. Epub 2005 Dec 21. Extreme skewing of X chromosome inactivation in mothers of homosexual men. Bocklandt S, Horvath S, Vilain E, Hamer DH. Department of Human Genetics, University of California, Los Angeles, CA, USA. Human sexual preference is a sexually dimorphic trait with a substantial genetic component. Linkage of male sexual orientation to markers on the X chromosome has been reported in some families. Here, we measured X chromosome inactivation ratios in 97 mothers of homosexual men and 103 age-matched control women without gay sons. The number of women with extreme skewing of X-inactivation was significantly higher in mothers of gay men (13/97=13%) compared to controls (4/103=4%) and increased in mothers with two or more gay sons (10/44=23%). Our findings support a role for the X chromosome in regulating sexual orientation in a subgroup of gay men. Neurosci Biobehav Rev. 2005;29(7):1057-66. Epub 2005 Apr 25 The neurodevelopment of human sexual orientation. Rahman Q. School of Psychology, University of East London, The Green, London E15 4LZ, UK. q.rahman@uel.ac.uk [...] Here, evidence is reviewed which supports the proposal that sexual orientation in humans may be laid down in neural circuitry during early foetal development. Behaviour genetic investigations provide strong evidence for a heritable component to male and female sexual orientation. Linkage studies are partly suggestive of X-linked loci although candidate gene studies have produced null findings. Further evidence demonstrates a role for prenatal sex hormones which may influence the development of a putative network of sexual-orientation-related neural substrates.[...] |

gee, chris... you're a real gem. has anybody told you that yet today? i mean it. thanks a lot for sharing those pearls of wisdom with us. i'm sure that we'll all be better people for it. |
Okay Chris Shelby. You ready to be proven wrong? In the constitution, there is something called the Establishment Clause in the 1st Amendment. This clause states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." Thomas Jefferson would later go on to coin the actual phrase of "separation of church and state." And since the best argument that these homophobes can make revolves completely around religion, it proves it is simply a catering tactic towards the religious right base. If you don't think people are born gay, you are ignorant towards science. Here's some more quotes for you to swallow: "Keep the church and state forever separate"-Ulysses Grant "Strongly guarded...is the separation between religion and the constitution of the United States of America"- James Madison By trying to put a gay marriage ban into the constitution, Bush is trying to wedge religion in there. And I'll tell you this much, this isn't making ANYONE forget about his bad poll numbers or his failing, atrocious, and disgraceful war in Iraq. |

By the way, where's your evidence that it's a choice people make? I knew a gay guy in college who was lying to himself for years about being gay because he was afraid to come out to his parents who were devout baptists. He would constantly cry about how he wanted to be straight and, in his words "be normal" because he knew his parents would disown him if they knew the truth. To this day he still hasn't come out and is living a lie of being straight when he knows he is gay.

Rev. Hill Since when do you and others like you have the only voice for God? Who are you to judge? You are not God? As a minister you ought to be familiar with this biblical verse: "Judge not that you be not judged, condem not that you be not condemned. Forgive that you may be forgiven". Why is it that the Christian right is so anxious to condemn and so reluctant to forgive? |

maybe the rev. hill and others here could tell us why it is right to have this young man's spirit crushed within him because of his parent's religion. why should anybody have to cry because they are afraid of losing their parent' love for being what they have been created to be. does that seem fair? does it seem just? why should one person have to live his or her entire life in a lie to satisfy another's misguided sense of morality? |
Maybe you can recall the exact time in your life you chose your sexuality Chris, then tell us which you chose? |

Not nearly as much of an abomination as the lifestyle of the pedophile priests roaming the Catholic churches raping young boys against their wills. You sicken me Reverend and you are the precise reason I do not waste my time going to church anymore. I'll celebrate Christ in my own way. |

Well said! |

Thank GOD for the 1st Amendment! If the good "Reverand's" comments don't make the case for that wise decision i don't know what does.
The freedom to choose and practice one's religion is etched deeply into our deepest of roots as americans. Let's say just for argument's sake that being gay WAS a choice! Why is THAT choice any different from the freedom to choose one's religion? Because of sex? Gee, priests can't have sex, but pastor's can. So, sex surely can't be the issue. Procreation? Priests can't have children, they "marry" the church! Hmmmmm The arugment about the "morality" of gay marriage is no different than the "morality" argument of women being able to own land, vote, and the civil rights movement of the 60's. Life progresses. Society progresses. Fire and bimstone preachers will always be around - they need to raise money too you know! Oh, but they don't have to pay taxes on that! Talk about having it both ways! |
|
I see priests all over the news having sex, albeit w/ young boys. Maybe if the church would let them have sex and get married, this problem would slowly go away. |

This post is completely outrageous! I'm a catholic, heterosexual who attended catholic school and continues to be invovled in the church. I don't care if you're gay, lesbian or straight. I don't care if I go to Hell for being FOR gay marriage.
If you all are such great christians you should know God forgives EVERYONE. Do you recall the hanging on the cross at all? Don't come at us with your bullshit reasons that they are going to go to hell or anyone associated with them is going to hell. What do you care? Are you the one going to hell? No. So shut up. Plus the fact that marriage was not made up in order to reproduce. Ask any unmarried, or underage parent.(Hello Hollywood?!) It's also a sin not to be married when you bear children, it's also a sin to live with someone before marriage, it's also a sin to have sex before marriage. So, I'd say the majority of the World is going to Hell. How bout you try to come up with something against anything I say? I'm sure whatever it is, it will be well thought out and make a lot of sense.(Please note the pure sarcasm). |

Which post are you talking about? Sounds like it could be any on here. |

I bought several on ebay but they do get in the way when I am shifting my big rig. Once I got an oil stain right next to the face of the poodle and it make it look like a tear stain. Very precious. |
