Of course she wouldn't turn it down, that would be rude.

But it's just as rude to give something you know the person doesn't want and thinks is a waste of money & natural resources.

She'd much rather I just call her and talk for awhile, like I've done every year since I left home.

Gift giving is about what the RECIPIENT wants, not the giver. Why would I give her something she doesn't want?

Leave it to the Republicans to screw up a gift from the Dems. Now they've turned it into just another anti-gay rant against lesbians adopting. They couldn't just shut up and enjoy the Dems screw up; they had to do them one better!

And THAT'S why the GOP will lose again in November.

FYI: Ann and Mitt lived in a basement apt. for the first 5 yrs. of marriage while they went to the same college, They even had their first child while living there. The 'apt' in the basement had bare concrete floors until Ann found carpet remnants ans free samples and laid them out. They used a door on saw horses as a desk. Yep, lots of help- like Moochelle with 21 assistants and one just it iron her nappy hair.
What a touching story. Wanna hear the rest?

<quoted text>That's right, it's a choice and you chose to eat rice and beans, wear thrift store clothes, etc. What do you want, a gold star? There are woman who are widows or divorced that don't have a choice and no, not everyone can make that choice, so wth are you posting about? Is this your defense for a woman that didn't eat rice and beans nor wear thrift clothes? LOL! PULEEZE! Women who's husband's died in the wars don't have choices either, but sanctimonious and hypocritical pubs like you have thinking deficits.
Imagine, a poor woman taking up for a wealthy woman, ain't that rich. Now we know for sure that most pubs always vote against their own best interests or are just plain dumb.
What I want is for people to stop lying by saying that staying home with the kids is a luxury.

As for widows or widowers not having the option, that's a very small percentage of parents.

As for divorced people, they made the choice to divorce, so they don't get to whine about the consequences.

Every family with two parents can have one parent stay home. It's ludicrous to carry on the fallacy that staying at home is only for the ultra rich.

And it shows exactly how out of the touch Obama is for saying they didn't have the "luxury" for Michelle to stay home.

I enjoyed laughing at your ridiculous...thanks!

What a fake issue. Mittens said he relies on his wife for an understanding of how women view the importance of jobs. He involved his wife in the issue.

While feminists clearly believe housework should qualify for Social Security compensation, if not outright wages on its own, it's clear a mind bogglingly wealthy, stay at home mom does not have any personal experience regarding the job market to offer any serious political candidate.

She might have great policy ideas for all I know, but she has none of the personal experience on women and the employment market that Mittens was alluding to.

What does she think about birth control? That's what I want to know. Does she thing as Rick Saintpornum does that birth control is taking the country in a wrong direction? Or does she approve of the Pill, or of the morning after pill, or of sex ed in public high schools, or of Planned Parenthood offering (non abortion) family planning services? Maybe, like the Bush wives, she is actually pro choice....

Wasn't that just another hilarious piece of victim mentality phony-baloney from the liar in chief? He gets scholarships to the best private schools, won't even show us his financials from college, gets a cake job right out of Harvard, can't hack it, goes and rabble-rouses while Michelle continues to earn $300k a year, spends 6 months in Bali writing about his wonderful self, steal property with help from Tony Rezsko, uses civil rights attorneys to disqualify all his Dem competitors from the Illinois ballots becaus ehe lost the first time around, and he is playing the populist? Oh, poor Owebama!

THAT is what the left doesn't like about conservative women, or conservative blacks, for that matter. They don't play the victim so the libs can't feel superior to them. It's what they do best, you know.

how many maids did she emply from 1970-1993, which would be the years that she was raising her children.
2010 is irrelevant, her youngest would have turned 18 in 1993.
.
and, Ann is from a different age, in the late 60's - early 70's, women were more apt to stay home and raise the kids, with some volunteering on the side.
.
.
that being said, I'm a SAHM, and have been since March of 2004.
with the cost of daycare for 2 kids, it would have actually cost me money to continue working (like $25 a week, it was pretty even).
the idea of working for the sole purpose of paying someone to raise my kids, was laughable at best.
we cut back, and make it work.
anyone with an income earning partner can do it, but there's a lot of going without, and summer camp is NOT in the budget.
.
.
my point is that Ann did what was expected of women in that era, just watch the closing credits of Animal House, all those girls end up housewives.
I clearly remember the evening my wife and I sat down and calculated what it would cost for her to go back to work after our first child was born.

It's surprisingly expensive to work, and after the next one came, we would have barely broke even. So, she stayed home and like you, we made it work, which required quite a change in spending habits, eating habits and cutting back on a lot of things that we barely missed after a while. It wasn't always easy, but she had been raised by a working mother, a rarity in the '50's and early '60's and hated going to "nursery school" with a passion.

About a year before our youngest was in school full time, she found a local, part-time evening position. The extra money helped, we didn't have to pay for child care and I think she enjoyed it as much for her mental health as she did the extra income, because sometimes, you just need to hang out with an adult when you're home with kids all the time.

Raising five boys is a job, no matter what, but you're right. Most mothers of five were home with their children in the '70's.

Both our daughter-in-law and our daughter opted to stay home with their pre-schoolers, as more and more women are choosing to do. One of these households is barely scraping by, they do without a lot of stuff they enjoyed before they had children and are rapidly closing in on having all three in school full time. Yet, this couple has no regrets about their choice. There is no re-do for those magical early childhood years, and those children won't be any worse for rice and pasta dishes, used bicycles and gently used clothing.
