I won't argue that point, but I doubt if it's a million. We have changed our gas, oil formulas & engines plus exaust systems to make them less harmful. We need to and are doing better ever year.
If you had to make a choice between use of autos/trucks or smoking, which would you chose?

Maybe if smokers as a whole were more considerate of non-smokers they would have support from the non-smoking folk to fight higher taxes.
Smokers are not a seperate class or sub-set of the species. Smokers come form every social class, race, religion ( except morman, Jehovia's Witness )and are of varying intelligence levels.

A rude and crude criminal may be a smoker but so might the cop that brings him in and the judge that convicts him. Any idiot can smoke but then again so did Albert Einstein.

There is no such thing as "smokers as a whole", we are just people and some are considerate and others are not.

A very cogent argument against the smokers' rights advocates' claims of "discrimination".

Actually statistics show that smokers are generally less educated and generally from the lowest classes. Yes there are exceptions. I digress. Smokers , not all but most, throw their lit butts out car windows, smoke in these same cars with children and just generally show less concern for non-smokers. You can not tell me using a street as an ashtray or throwing lit butts going 50 mph is intelligent let alone considerate. I will stand by my statement that if smokers as a whole ,were more respective to non smokers and the environment, they would get more support from these same non-smokers as far as legistlation is concerned, whether its a ban or a tax or whatever. I hope everyone has a great day.

Actually, anti-smoking legislation is just bowing to the politically correct nuts! And....OBESITY kills many more people than smoking, so do you want food regulations too? And for the record.... your classifying smoker as "less intelligent" is at the best misinformed, at the worst is stereotypical bigotry. And also...I SMOKE, i have a college degree, i work as a college instructor, and i would put my "IQ" up against yours anyday!!!!

Ah, yes. A college instructor who is not familiar with and cannot grasp the concept of exceptions. No wonder the quality of education in America has taken such a steep dive.

BTW, do YOU drop butts on the street or flick them out your car window? Feel free to take the fifth, or to sneak in behind the anonymity that permits you to claim a teaching position and just go ahead and lie to us if you would rather.

lol Exactly and I pointed it out. By the way, knowingly abusing your body is stupid on its own merits, not to mention selfish to ones own family members.

I say ban it entirely.

1. It is proven to be highly addictive.

2. It is proven to cause cancer.

3. It is proven to be harmful to others exposed to it, not just the smoker.

4. It stinks.

I get why some people want to keep cigs on the market... the tobaco people make tons of money off of an addictive substance that eventually kills people, and the other group is addicted to the cigs, so they want to keep them around.

However, any rational objective person who is not addicted couldn't be "for" cigs.

We can't get much of ANYTHING done in TN, since regulating tobacco use is the province of the state Legislature, and they can't have a go at it unless the Agriculture Committee brings something to the floor.

I suspect that the current law here was the result of someone on that committee realizing that even a weak law would allow them to posture as "Public Health advocates" and make it harder to find backing for anything more useful. Passing something was likely the only way to avoid having the decision taken our of their hands.

Just a warning to be careful what you wish for. I live in central NY and we passed a smoking ban. In less than 2 years we have become a place filled with closed down businesses and abandon houses. The people TRIED tell them the ban would hurt their business but nobody seemed to care, they a just wanted to "look good".Now the businesses have had to close down. Our city(Utica) is so broke they had to get an emergency loan to cover their payroll.BANNING SMOKING WILL AND DOES HURT YOUR LOCAL ECONOMY!It's should be left up to the owners if they allow smoking or not. It someone doesn't like, just don't come in!!!

I agree. It really should be left up to the business owner and the people then can make the decision to go to that place or not. This is where the government control is getting way out of hand. Same thing with seat belts. They do save lives but it should still be up to the individual whether they wear one or not. Adults that is. Children should be buckled in.

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Sagittarius

Relationships have been going through through testing times since the Solar Eclipse at last month's New Moon in Gemini on May 20. Events may force you to reevaluate the state of a partnership. You may even decide that you need to make some major adjustments if things are to carry on as you would like. During the coming fortnight leading up to the rare second New Moon in Gemini, this may feel like a crisis, but that doesn't mean you should abandon all hope or throw out the baby with the bathwater.
