Tougher TN smoking ban may be on the way

Full story: www.knoxnews.com

Some legislators say bars, all workplaces deserve protection

Two years after the General Assembly passed a bill to ban smoking from most workplaces, including restaurants, supporters say the law is working and should be extended to include places such as over-21 venues that are now exempt.

The original bill was hotly debated, and I suspect that there are still strong feelings about it even if they haven't been expressed on this forum of late. If you feel strongly about these new restrictions, now is the time to get in touch with your representatives.

This is the way they do it.
They get their foot in the door, then proceed to force it to open more.
They never stop.

The will of some business owners and their customers is LET US HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE!
If I smoke and own a bar where my staff and 90% of my custoners also smoke, why should I allow the government to tell me I will be breaking the law if I continue doing business the way me and my customers prefer.
Next I will not be allowed to smoke on the street. Apartments will go smoke free, so people will not be allowed to smoke where they live.
Why not just cut to the chase and outlaw tobacco all togather? While we are at it outlaw liquor and fastfood. I'm sure they are also on the list

Here in MD I often get to Kill Copperheads, and I do enjoy doing it. I also enjoy being able to go out to eat or have a drink in a smoke free restaurant or bar. 0>:~)

It appears TN wants to kill off businesses.
The state will find itself spending a lot of money on a law that can not be enforced.

It's a shame they didn't follow the money as to the three W's, that being WHAT, WHY and WHO is behind all the negative, deceitful research and anti smoke push.

I don't agree with it, but I think the reasoning is that the current situation either promotes hiring discrimination against non-smokers in smoking venues or unhealthy working environments for them if they are hired. The reasoning is sound, but the exemption was one of the compromises that got the first bill passed. Trying to get rid of that exemption amounts to welshing on that deal. For that reason, I would like to see the bill defeated even though it would benefit me personally--I am a musician who would rather not play in smoky bars.

Fair is fair. When you make a deal, you stick to it.

If you were a musician in Ohio, thanks to the smoking ban, you wouldn't need to worry about a 'smoky' or non-'smoky' bar. Those that survive that had bands for entertainment are NOT hiring and you couldn't get a gig for pay now. So here's warning on what can come to TN.

bbeing from nashville my self I have great opportunities to talk to musicians, especially since my dad is a star....the bans have harmed the music industry because those bars that use to higher them across the country dont have the crowds they use to have due to the bans. Todays answer to the bans has been the hiring of wharehouses by groups of folks for weekend smoke easy parties. Word of mouth spreads and catering services get provided at a nominal fee per head and a dance floor set up and the band or bands......basically the roaring 20s all over agin but a good outlet if your looking to get some music work......

It's called the BUY OUT or PAY OFF.
Happened here in Ohio too.
They sell their souls for their private and business bank accounts.
Also, those so called national organizations you mentioned, they are the middle men that profit. They got the money to do 'the ban bidding' from grants from the above you mentioned. They PROFIT. It is all a giant marketing scam using the government and the whims of don't like concerning a product.

It is just an anti agenda since they didn't get total smoking prohibitions in bars the first time.

I'm telling you, you WILL WORK LESS if this passes
I don't care that you have music meccas in TN, you WILL WORK less if it passes as the bar clientele will bottom out and the clubs will cut back on live entertainment before they fire one of their waitstaff.

It is just horrible in my state and I am a well respected and seasoned veteran in the business.

Do what you can to keep it the way it is.
Don't look that gift horse in the mouth that you have.

The non-smoking and smoking musician BOTH loose work.

The only musicians I have ever seen shill for the bans are hobbyists that play so infrequently, I don't know why they even bother to call themselves musicians as they are not working professionals.

I don't know what your situation is concerning that, but if you are a regular jobber like I have been for the last 20+ years, you will lose work. I have friends who have come back from NYC thinking things would be great up there...it is not.

I hope you can keep the antis at bay. These people do not like the idea of nightlife at all and it is part of a bigger agenda that includes organizations like MADD.

I could say more, but I would rather hear a response from you before I do.

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Sagittarius

Relationships have been going through through testing times since the Solar Eclipse at last month's New Moon in Gemini on May 20. Events may force you to reevaluate the state of a partnership. You may even decide that you need to make some major adjustments if things are to carry on as you would like. During the coming fortnight leading up to the rare second New Moon in Gemini, this may feel like a crisis, but that doesn't mean you should abandon all hope or throw out the baby with the bathwater.
