There are already Vocational Schools available for those who, for whatever reason, do not go on to CC's or Universities. Why not just make sure those are funded instead of putting this extra burden on colleges? And btw it's a little old hearing that everybody in the world needs a 4 year degree. First, not everybody is academically capable of completing college (or even getting in). But we'll need plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, nurses' assistants (and other medical related positions), transcriptionists, court reporters, car mechanics, small motor repairmen, and a dozen or more other occupations. Right now we see a whole bunch of educated people who are unemployed or working in jobs that pay less than some of those above.

There will always be high school graduates who don't go on to college for different reasons or nvause they are just not cut out for college and there's nothing wrong with that, but they should also be given the opportunity to learn a trade in high school and not just college prep courses.

Think maybe you should go back to your factory job making American products...and quit worrying about the birth place of Obama or Romney. Besides that, there's no question of Romney's birthplace...his father isn't running for president (he died some time ago) and Romney's grandfather lived in Mexico and was an American citizen. We have much bigger things to worry about.

How about a private sector solution! Why should our taxes be used to train workers for any employer. Employers should make their own investment in human capital. All they must do is pick individuals with smarts and/or talent and train them to do the job, at the employers expense. That would make a slightly smaller and less expensive government.

I know many schools, where I live, unfortunately have done away with vocational programs. Maybe(?) high schools offering vocational programs coinciding with times again would prep students for jobs who don't have college in their future. Not everybody is cut out for college. We have vocational schools here and it is very difficult for young people to get into them. There is a lot of competition and the twns dont like to pay the extra money for them along with transportation charges.

Wake up USA wrote: Virginia did this in the 70s. If you brought a company to VA, they would teach any subjects free to enhance that company whether at the college or bring the classroom to the company site. I worked in the system during that time and all we had was in MA was job training programs that did nothing except hire counselors that were hacks needing jobs. People spent more time meeting with their hack counselors that they did learning a profession. The program was a joke on the taxpayers. Virginia's program brough a lot of companies to them and it worked. Translation: Virgina would subsidize companies relocating there by training their workers. You wouldn't need as many state workers if you just gave them money. Companies can relocate based on the best deal (tax breaks, direct subsidies and/or $#%@*& states and local goverments will give. Oh well, even with the quid pro quo, let's don't call it corruption.

There is a lot of competition and the twns dont like to pay the extra money for them along with transportation charges. You're right! That's what is happening in many cities around here too and it's very sad. I know some high schools still have cosmetology, but who knows how long that will continue in high schools. Many trades, that could be taught in high school, have become a privatized money making racket. My now sister- in-law decided to go to school to become a medical assistant. She told me what the tuition was and I about fell off the chair. It was $22,000.00(3 years ago) for 18 months of school to graduate and find a job that pays $8.50-$11.50 an hour, which is the going pay rate in our area. I remember when I attended corps school in the navy and it was mainly classroom studies and labs that any high school in our country can easily accommodate. Our clinicals were at a local VA. It would cost about the same for high school medical assistant programs as it does for cosmetology programs.
