Bartenders, waiters, hair stylists, cab drivers and other workers who depend on tips for much of their income are among those who say they are seeing decreases as customers feeling the economic pinch trim their gratuities—or sometimes omit them entirely.

Just about everyone's income is affected by this sorry economy. What's new? I personally would not eat out if I couldn't afford to leave a tip.

i am a stylist in fla. this career has really taken a downturn. ppl get hair services less often to stretch their income. which is more important-a quarter tank of gas or a haircut? my employer actually had to reduce hrs due to slow business

Service sector businesses, which are a huge part of our economy, are taking a hit due to the economic downturn. Make a difference: vote in November.

neither a republican nor a democrat can free America from the mire that it is in. The entire culture needs to be changed, consumerism based capitalism is doomed to fail.

Despite numerous news articles to the contrary, people still want to believe that the economy is largely dependent on the policies of the administration. Actually, it's much more dependent on global pressures and cycles. Whether Obama or McCain is elected, gas prices are not going back to what they used to be...

I live on a fixed income and have cut my tipping to about 10%. I used to tip closer to 20%, but gas prices preclude my doing so now.

Yeah, don't eat out of you can't tip. We make 2.13 an hour and tips are our pay. I had someone leave a .46 cent tip on $10.00.

Go to fast food places. You don't have to tip.

Well, then, I'd say we're screwed and we don't need to elect anyone because they have no jurisdiction to do anything. What good are they?

This is deplorable.
I hope this never happens to Rabbis doing circumcisions who are reliant on tips.

Very good point. I agree completely. Let's have a smaller government with fewer tax dollars to waste and fewer restrictions on people's free will.

Funny then that the AMEX is vastly effected by the news in each news cycle.

Time for the tip reliant service sector to work on their customer service then I'd say. If I can afford to go out and eat I can afford to tip. I haven't changed my tipping habits based on the economy, I've changed the frequency with which I go out to dinner. I still tip 5-20% based on service and attitude, though a rude person will get no tip whatsoever.
"The customer is always right" doesn't mean they're not as*holes or that you even have to like them.

Yes, news of global pressures or what those pressures might be in the future. I think I saw an article about gas prices going up because of an attack on an oil rig in Nigeria...
