Why in heck was he going into Mexico for breakfast?
One, what was he DOING near the border from Ft.Hood. And Two, why would he want to have breakfast in Mexico?

Huh. I think we should be on the outs with Mexico anyway. But that's just me.

THIS should create an international incident.

But I'm willing to bet we'll pussyfoot anyway due to Bush's precious north American union idea.

Bet this goes hush, hush real fast too.

We are not. The Judge better do the honest thing and let him go. As far as starting some sort of war like confrontation with Mexico, that would be awesome. Mexico would not stand a chance.

Yes -- time to declare war on Mexico. What could Mexico do, we could build a fence and keep all their military age men on this side of the border where they already are, and Mexico needs what's left for it's military controlling it's own people.

If they Mexicans here gripe or get any big ideas about being patriotic to their country, we cut off their food stamps and starve them -- they won't fight us then.

Nobody should go to Mexico but the dangers of Mexico aren't well publicized and many people go for something as trivial as filling a prescription or getting their teeth cleaned.

It used to be common enough for people to go over for a meal, or to shop but that's getting to be a very foolish thing to do -- as this soldier could tell us.

The way the case is shaping up with the evidence on the table about this guy's lack of priors, not fitting the typical smuggler pattern, taking the wrong exit and attempting to make the u-turn, can't even speak the language, etc., I say he WILL be released. Yes, chances are the case will be stretched out a bit and he might do some short time, but I'm confident diplomacy will kick in to a necessary degree and get him a slap in the hand, to the point that he will never want to hold another breakfast burrito in his life....mmmm, machaca con huevo, don't forget the salsa.

...by the way, I've noticed there are plenty of haters against Mexico and probably the spanish language and hispanic culture in the El Paso area. How can you live in a town right NEXT to it? You must hate your life as a whole EVERYDAY. Must suck to be you, I figured you'd be used to it by now or would have moved to a little corner in West Virginia.

You should read some of the previous articles on this.

Rich was on his way home to California. He was in my Army unit. We came back about 4 months ago from Iraq; and typically when a unit returns from war the Army moves many of the people around. He was being reassigned to Honduras where he can't bring his car, his gun/knife collection, and many of his other personal belongings. He went on leave and headed home to California to drop all these things off with family and spend time with them before shipping down to Honduras. It's a long drive from Ft. Hood to El Paso, and if you're not paying careful attention to the roads it is easy to get turned around and find yourself headed to Mexico.

Richard hasn't done anything wrong, served his country honorably in two foreign countries already, and has been cleared by the ATF. The damn, dirty Mexicans are doing this just to be pricks. We need to take him back from them one way or the other. We have been more than hospitable to their citizens that have been coming over here breaking our laws, taking advantage of our welfare and not even paying taxes; and this is how they're gonna treat one of ours who didn't even want to be there in the first place...

The Mexicans should be so agressive in controlling weapons with the cartels, but than again Sgt. Medina doesn't have the money to buy them off like the drug dealers.

The US goverment backed by President Bush should do everyting in their power to bring him back. We owe him that much. After he is safely back, just "Nuke" Mexico and let's get rid of our biggest headache.

....I agree Dinah, ideally he shouldn't have to do any time at all, but chances are with all procedures and diplomatic back-n-forth to take place from here on with this case, he'll be stuck for a while. Maybe he will learn the language with "Espaņol Con Barreras"

it amuses me by the stupidity of some of you, "lets bomb mexico, that would be so cool, yeah!!! he he he" are you ready to start a global incident thats right not international between just two coutries, do you really think other countries that do not like the U.S. to begin with and that is more then half this green earth would not take the opportunity to attack the U.S. and align themselves with Mexico, how stupid do you have to be to actually think that we can bomb Mexico and thats it, happy ending. fuking ignorance is all i read here. i can see north korea, china, not to mention middle eastern countries jumping on the mexican bandwagon, why not the U.S. has done it in the past, stuck its nose where it didnt fkng belong, Korea anyone? grow up kids, this soldier messed up, period, pray for him!!!

I wonder why he was going to Mexico for breakfast??!!

That seems kind of weird. Then again maybe he had read the Times this past weekend when they released the list of the El Paso restaurants that failed their health inspections.

Yeah right, bomb Mexico if you want. We have money to defend ourselves and good friends that may help us and that would take the chance to go to war with the USA. Bombing us will result not only in many angry mexicans but also in many latin american countries angry. So think first before bombing us. You are already hated by at least a dozen countries, that would take the chance to join Mexico against its war with the USA. In all latinamerica and in many countries in western europe you are already hated. Someday, it will be the whole world against "America", who wants to get off?

He said he was TRYING to go to Juarez for breakfast, not that he got lost. He didn't try to turn around until AFTER he was already IN Mexico.

"About 50 feet south of the first Mexican checkpoint as he tried to execute a U-turn, Medina Torres said, federal inspectors stopped him and asked whether he had drugs or weapons. "

WTF? meaning he had already gone thru the checkpoint...SOUTH means further into Mexico. He obviously wasn't smart enough to go a little further before turning around so as not to draw suspicion.

All this bomb Mexico, dirty Mexicans stuff is idiotic. If he had half an education he would know that our neighbor to the south does not allow firearms to come into the country, and would have taken every precaution not to enter.

Furthermore, anyone who knows anything about Juarez knows that there aren't any restaurants or places to eat within a mile walking distance of that bridge.

So either this guy is just pretty dumb or he had planned to drive into Mexico.
