I too thought the headline didn't go with the piece. I am hopeful that as this plays out, Rev. Wright will be seen in a better perspective. I am a practicing Midwestern Christian, white. To me the notion that God judges the American nation is common to both white and black churches in the Midwest. I saw a post by the son of Francis Schaeffer who said, to the effect, that when his father taught "God damn America" he was invited to the White House three times! From a relgious perspective which includes the prophets of the Hebrew scriptures, crticism of nationalism is a part of what it is to be a religious person. At the same time, like Obama, I am a believer in the American story, and, in that sense, am an American patriot. I believe tthat among Midwestern people of faith, there may be a larger resevoir of understanding of Rev. Wright prophetic role than is allowed for by the media. We'll see.
I fear that a real flashpoint is Rev. Wright's call for more justice in Palestine. In my judgment, the prophets of the Hebrew scriptures would support Rev. Wright on this point.

What would Jesus do to Reverend Wright? I think he would want to sit down and talk with him about it.

Being offended about someone being resistant to the United States government PUTS YOUR GOD and your beliefs in your Christ and his religion SECOND TO YOUR PATRIOTISM.

JESUS WAS ALSO A PERSON WHO SPOKE OUT AGAINST HIS GOVERNMENT.

Would YOU have been part of those that HELPED CRUCIFY HIM FOR IT?

IF HIS CRUCIFICTION were happening now, how would the news media be covering it?

BellaMia: I agree with you. Maybe I was living in a fantasy world, but I believed that race relations were improving, and I had hope for the day that, as Rodney King put it, we could all just get along. I had no knowledge of the kind of theology which is preached at Obama's church, i.e. black liberation theology. In order to educate myself, I read some of James Cone's books, who is an architect of black liberation theology and Rev. Wright's admitted inspiration. Quotes from the book below absolutely floored me.(1)“To be Christian is to be one of those whom God has chosen. God has chosen black people." (2) "While it is true that blacks do hate whites, black hatred is not racism." (3) "All white men are responsible for white oppression." (4) "Theologically, Malcolm X was not far wrong when he called the white man "the devil." (5) "If there is any contemporary meaning of the Antichrist, the white church seems to be a manifestation of it." (6)“Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community … Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love.”

Wright's words are being distorted by the major media, and being clipped out of context! Watch the whole clip here and decide for yourself:

http://www.youtube.com/watch...

In these speeches, Wright is being an advocate of non-violence. He is the victim of a media hit job. The major media is playing "divide-and-conquer" with we Americans!!! Watch the videos and forward to everyone you know!

dmh: Please see the quotes directly above your post which are from Wright's theological mentor, James Cone, and which are characteristic of the viewpoint of the theology preached by Wright, and then tell us that Wright has received a raw deal. No, Rev. Wright is very lucky that the vast majority of Americans have no understanding of the racist theology preached by Wright and other black liberation theologists on a weekly basis.

I see this argument as a catch 22. Blogs are buying the theme here but not the repugnant ramificatons of an Obama presidenticy. Change we ill get but not the kind of change that dreamers expect. We'll have repubs blocking any and all legislation because dems will not be able to get any bi-partisan legislation unless it is a pol pay raise. Prior to his presidency John Conyers has promised the left wingnuts that articles of impeachment will be filed against Bush/Cheney. His lack of knowledge of the Constitution shows his proficiency. The constitution allows no such action as the position is only to stand in line if the president cannot and his only other authority is to break a 50/50 tie vote in the Senate. Nonetheless, the filing will segregate the republicans. Gridlock will be rampant on the Hill. So all of the dreams of the left will go down in flames and we will suffer for it. Also, Obama has shown the world that he is a liar. Yes, they are closely watching and will not be charmed by Obama' oration. Anyone who thinks not is in denial. You want change.....you'll get change alright.

Hate is hate no matter where it originates. It's strange that some want to give this situation a pass. I don't think that Obama actually lived in Kansas. So much misinfo is being put out as fact like the Government gave black men syphllis. The Gov. didn't give it to them but could have cured it, but instead lied to the men, and withheld the medicine that would have cured them, using them as guinea pigs. Obama needs to take charge of his campaign and get rid of the race baiters on his staff. He doesn't have to announce it but get it done. Results will show. While he is at it ,he should point out to Michelle O. that she is not a victim. He owes his grandma an apology. What's "typical white"? He used a broad stroke of the brush with that one.

Let's get real people. We cannot hold 1 person accountable for other people's words and actions. I am voting based based on the capabilities of the candidate. it is a hiring interview. I don't really care if he/she is christian or moslem. the bottom line: Is the candidate qualified for the current job?. America, don't make the mistake you made with Bush.

Mr. Clarance Page, you are wrong. A older colleague of mine, who voted for McCain and supported McCain all the time, after hearing Obama's Tuesday speech said to me and another colleague that he is seriously thinking about voting for Obama in the general election.

Those who are not willing to listen to what each of candidate has to say, and/or not willing to spend the time to learn the truths about the candidates most probably will stay with their pick. I am 42, but I never voted in any election. This year I will be voting, only because I see a candidate that is trustworthy, and that person is Barack Obama. Whether he will get Dems nomination is another question. If he doesn't, then I may vote for McCain or simply will not bother to vote.

But, yes, Obama's speech did bring some republican leaning voters to Obama's side. I can testify to that.

This is silly. I was brought up in the middle east where race is never an issue. The fact that you people are talking about race and have in your mind that there is a color and racial difference between YOU; does indeed make you a racist. I feel sorry for you.

Is it just me or does the media have an understanding that this preacher's words will be referred to as "divisive", "inflammatory", "provocative", etc.? I have yet to read a report where his words are called what they actually are,"racist". Plain and simple. This word would also perfectly describe the preacher, and his congregation.

I am a conservative Republican who would not vote for either Hillary or Ombama. However, I had a great deal of respect for Ombama even though I did not agree with his liberal positions on the important issues. I must admit, I lost a greate deal of respect for him due to his association with a minister that appears to be anti American. His so called friends ( Rev. Wright and his wife should be helping him in his campaign not throwing road blocks in his path.

Mr. Obama looks at the reverend with thanks and loyalty. He steps away from the divisive speak with dignity saying that with all due respect he couldn't agree with that type of fomentation. Having heard the words of Reverend Wright I look to Mr. Obama to make it right with the help of us all. I'm afraid our minds are clouded by the division that exists in our country today.

Sen. Obama became the "black candidate" when he didn't vehemently reject all of Rev. Wright's racist rantings.
Up until that point, he was the candidate of all races, colors and creeds..........It's unfortunate he couldn't see this as an opportunity to reject the old style approach of Rev.Wright, and as a result, he will not be the next president of the United States.

I will stick with Obama the republican stick with their picks no matter what; that is what dems need to do. The repbs never blamed Bush for all of his failings. They don't care what neo con nut jobs talk in McCain's ears. This only hurts Obama if we let it.

Black Americans are 16% of the population. They aren't going to elect a cabbage without more American votes. Many people believe that Wright speaks for all Blacks. Obama will lose big to McCain. We haven't even gotten to his marxist feelings or gay's abortion illegal immigration yet. And as commander and chief v McCain thats a joke.
