Paulson says financial bailout not intended as stimulus package

Rep. Paul Kanjorski, D-Pa., told Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson there is a "crisis of confidence" across the United States that demands action.

During a hearing of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Financial Services, Kanjorski compared Paulson's statements that the financial situation had been stabilized sounded a lot like Great Depression-era statements by President Herbert Hoover.

Texas has become a major hub for human trafficking

Texas has become a major hub for human trafficking, state officials said yesterday while proposing a more aggressive response to what a senior government official described as "modern-day slavery".

Nearly 20% of human-trafficking victims found nationwide have been in Texas, according to a report released by the attorney general, Greg Abbott. The 57-page report, mandated by the legislature in 2007, also identifies Interstate 10 as a major route through Texas for human-trafficking rings.

Whoa, Mamma.com! Mark Cuban Charged by the SEC

Mark Cuban has been called abrasive, brash, egotistical and more. Not only is he the owner of the NBA franchise the Dallas Mavericks, he's a billionaire and Chairman of HDNet, an HDTV cable network. He's also poked his nose into things some think he should stay out of, such as commenting --- and blogging --- on politics and tech.

Bin Laden 'cut off from al-Qaeda'

The CIA says Osama Bin Laden is isolated from the day-to-day operations of al-Qaeda, but that the organisation is still the greatest threat to the US.

CIA director Michael Hayden said the Saudi militant was probably hiding in the tribal area of north-west Pakistan.

Gen Hayden said that Bin Laden was "putting a lot of energy into his own survival" and that his capture remained the US government's top priority.

But he warned that al-Qaeda continued to grow in Africa and the Middle East.
