1,000 people evacuated near Sierra Madre wildfire

About 1,000 residents were evacuated from 200 homes in the upper part of Sierra Madre against the mountains over the weekend as Southern California broiled in record-breaking heat. Fire officials said Sunday evening that the blaze was about 30% contained and that the threat to structures had mostly abated. But they said they would not decide until noon today whether to allow residents to return to their homes. All Sierra Madre schools will be closed today.

I hope the firefighters are able to save all the homes and that they don't sustain any further injuries. Bless them for their diligence and hard work in that scorching heat.

Our close friends lost their home and beloved pet cat because of a jerk of an arsonist.

The arsonists that start these fires should have to clean up the mess they make and then some. They should have to remove debris, replant, replace and rebuild every bit of what they burned. Then they should have to train to fight these kinds of fires and serve some time that way - on the front lines.

Fires are natural. They are needed to keep forests and grasslands healthy.

When you put fires out, you increase the danger of huge fires later.

I agree A1A Why is it only folks east of the west coast can understand that concept?

I wonder if people who worry about the wealthy homes in the canyons around California are the same ones who make the comment "why would anyone live below sea level" in regards to New Orleans.

Here's a thought - why would anyone live in a tinder box?

Agreed! Why can't people grasp this concept??? Instead, they build their homes in future & present fire paths putting 1st responders in harms way.

We should create a new tax called the "Idiotic & Stupid" tax for such people.

This is an area that has not burbed in 40 years. Anytime you get an arsonist, all bets are off. You could live in California or New Jersey, and stuff burns - that is the fact Jack.

The big question is why the fire started anyway? High air temperature is not a sufficient reason for fire to start. It is time for the green psychos will allow isolation of forest' areas with fire safe lanes without tree between one forest to another.
Fires are national security problem as well as global warming cause of 1000 times larger than CO2 emission from cars.
It is time to make sure that fires are not caused by intentional arson by the enemies of America and that the forests are designed with fire free spacing to avoid fire to move from one forest to the another.

You are correct, A1A CHARLES. My son is an Oregon Contract Firefighter. That being said, fires are not just "put out," rather they are managed to the best ability of the firefighters. Lush, heavy growth in wilderness areas is unnatural. By maintaining and controlling the fire, nature's balance is maintained. Putting the fires out is a matter of where there are humans and their property. Then the fires are controlled to keep those in harms way as safe as possible.
In nature, wild fires are a part of the balance, and putting the fires out puts things out of balance. Some grasses, trees, and other plants cannot survive without the heat of fires, which are needed for them to reproduce and survive. Growth of grasses and other ground cover left because a fire is prematurely put out with continue to grow and thicken. When there is a drought, it dies and is a superior fire hazard.

Yes, it's bad here....I can barely breath and my car and pool are covered in ash. The whole city is buried in ash. It's like the last days of Pompeii!

This is a bad situation. I hope everyone gets out safe. However on another note I is not too wise to have so many people in those 200 homes, I think they said about a 1,000 or about 10 to each house, they must have large families out there.

Unless my 4th grade math teacher was a complete liar, wouldn't that be 5 in each home?

Most of us Californians rent our garages to a dozen or more illegals and grow pot in the house. It's the only way to afford gas.

<quoted text>
"Fire Management"= A bunch of hourly paid, youthfully naive environmental superheroes standing around collecting money from the US treasury while the long-range implications of poor management practice and politically motivated ecological grandstanding build momentum toward a conflagration of epic proportion. Oh, well, we just about gave all of our old growth virgin forest away to the corporate welfare timber companies back in the day, so they could sell it off to Japan and other foreign interests. The resources that rightfully belong to the American people have been squandered to enrich an unholy few so you now have to pay to enter your state and national parks. Enjoy your vacation.

You ever watch a fire crown out in a bad fire season after a wind shift and have to shake and bake? Ever been to the Pacific Northwest? For that matter, have you ever put down the video game control and gotten out of your own living room, junior? People west of the whatever know a hell of lot more about forest fires than people who live where there aren't even any forests. Make a comparison about how much forest is west of the Rocky Mtn. foothils and then tell me that it isn't so.

Sorry about the attitude and the redundant post. It's hard to read silly comments like these and stay neutral, even if it's been twenty years or so since you were walking out of the burn and the truck went by carrying four of your co-workers sheet-covered dead burned bodies. I guess I'll just have to get used to the fact that everyone's a forestry expert.
