Mostly, I've remembered military events which weren't voluntary. In other cases, AA attendance was introduced as an alternative to discipline. Once again, government.
Very real stuff. Respect, as with all things is a matter of perspective. My personal observation is that many AA types are looking for company. I can think of many tangled reasons for that but I won't assume.
What are YOU assuming?
Thanks for pointing out court-ordered meeting attendance. Good one. I've rarely seen anyone who got anything out of being forced to attend AA meetings, or any other D&A rehab program, for that matter.

tangled reasons: Hmmm... sounds like you're referring to "the 13th step." Heheheheh.

I don't assume, I believe. And I believe I'll have a Bud and a beer after work. Heheheheh.

McCain comes from an entire family of senior Naval officers. His father and grandfather were both admirals in World War II and his family has military ties clear back to the Revolutionary War.
He's a warrior.

You just don't like her because she's Greek.

And?

There's nothing new in there. Yes, he drank his way through the Naval Academy. Yes, he was an average pilot. Yes, he used to brawl and fight. Yes, he left the Navy after he was told his career was basically over due to injuries incurred as a POW and his less than stellar service record. Yes, he screwed around on his first wife, lost her and then married the beer queen of Arizona.

But he and his wife don't hate America. That's going to be worth a lot in terms of the Electoral College come November.

So 4 more years of Bush would bring the country back? You're happy with the current state of the union? You people live in fear of change and maintain power by using fear. You're being added to the Kommunity Kook Klub list, right below Head Kook Don Miller of Stow. Your idea of the ideal America would be a Pat Robertson occupying the White House and the elimination of Church and State.
Can you libs get this straight? BUSH IS NOT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT! Moron!

Let's wait and see what kind of a team he puts together. We still don't know who his VP will be nor have we seen too many specific plans or promises other than to get us out of Iraq.(Which sounds like a great start to me!)
You have nothing good to say about McCain it seems either. Just what ARE you hanging around Topix for? I swear, you probably post on every thread on the forum but don't have much to say other than snarky jokes. Do you work for a living?
I'm giving Obama a +1 for getting Gore's support. Now he's got a strong Civil Rights advocate in his camp who's not just pushing quotas.(Not that Obama WAS pushing quotas but he certainly draws a lot of support from that camp and made minority legal rights a large part of his career.)
The Goracle's support is an asset? Are you kidding me? The biggest liar and hypocrit in the country? Flying in a private jet to crusade for conservation. Maybe he should practice what he preaches.

NASA, Not Able to Sound Authentic; He's perfect at that. Why are people looking for a team? The Presidency is offered to 1 person, not some basketball team, and we aren't voting for a V.P.
Gore is so stupid I am surprised he didnt endorse Hilary instead. Geez, it was obvious he would endorse the presumptive nominee.

A person's "nationality" is defined by the country of which he is a citizen. Only those of natural born American "nationality" are eligible to become president.

I'm not really sure at all what you're talking about but UrbanDictionary says that the 13th step is attempting to get a newcomer to go to bed with you. And I'll assume that a "Bud and a beer" has some "tangled" meaning as well but that's not going out on a limb.

Also, I wasn't exactly referring to court ordered attendance. The civil sector plays fast and loose with the law. Heck! Half the time, you're seeing the elected officials coming to work out of sorts.

Do I need to wade though all this? I was a child of the sixties and a teen of the seventies. In my formative years, Hunter Thompson was in, Jesus was out. Seven years of military service didn't exactly leave me with much appreciation for absolutes of morality either.

If you're looking for "respect" for abstinence, shouldn't that be in the form of self-respect? I'm not out to belittle a reformed alcoholic. I just don't like status conscious jerks belittling anyone who isn't totally absorbed in playing Daddy. There's where you'll find the hypocrites!

To a large extent, he is a hypocrite. Like everyone else, he thinks his mission warrants it.

Still, if anyone is going to mandate regulation, and I'm more interested in civil rights and alternative energy sources than I am in global warming, he's got a kind of quazi-bully pulpit from which to operate.

Global warming is a lost cause. Too much breeding and too many warlords who want industry and serfs to feed their armies.

The president relies on all sorts of experts to get informed opinions and to manage agencies that report to the president.

Gore isn't running for office and has repeatedly stated that he's no longer interested in that game. Take him seriously or not, he's cut himself loose from the beltway crowd. And no, he's not brilliant, but then again, most politicians are half-parasites.

As is, he holds his own but I'm sure he's a token at Apple with nothing more than media value. His book is relevant but no, he's not a scientist But a lot of scientists are as parasitic as politicians. Bush has a long history of dumping government scientists (among other professions!) who didn't tow the party line.

Gore HAS succeeded in putting a lot of media attention on the global warming issue which isn't as easy as it is for a Bush bean counter to fudge their spreadsheets with bad financial assumptions. Bad statistics just means that you get nasty bubbles that burst, which Bush probably has the singular distinction of presiding over two of without having some sort of vigilante justice administered to him!

As I see it, heroes are the ones who succeed in changing the world for the better. Gore won't make any difference if the world doesn't shed at least 3 billion people and/or come up with a new energy source that will be clean, low in thermal emissions and unlimited in supply for the foreseeable future.

Let's just face it. The world today is radically different than it's ever been. We don't know what will cause things to become unstable but we do know that there are several factors that are constantly at the edge of disaster.

I'm not predicting a warm and fuzzy quarter century for any of us. Just don't ask me if peak oil, oceanic thermal currents, nuclear winter or mercury in the landfills will be the first shoe that drops.

Is it stupid to try to respond to problems while they are still solvable? Obviously it is to a capitalist. I'm just not a pure capitalist.

Very disgusting right wing extremist propaganda video. So obvious you would have to be sleeping to not perceive the illusion. It is amazing how far (hateful, bigoted & prejudice) people will go. Fox News would run it if they thought they could get away with it but they know they would lose to much credibility. There is no great mystery to Obama, he was a Harvard graduate & much credible information out there from legitimate sources.

Yeah, I can dig that.

I remember some guy named Dan Rather presenting as fact some counterfeit military forms, trying to bring down the current prez.

I'm really glad the Dems and Libs never do what those damned Republicans do.

Oh yes. This is what you would call a defense. You are missing the whole point but, hey "remember 9/11" right!

Strawman.

The point is, what one group does, the other group does as well. Get over it.
