<quoted text>The top ten percent pay 70% of the taxes. How is that not a redistribution to the middle class instead of vice versa. In 2001 it was 64% so that share paid by the "rich" (although $137 k is all it takes to get in the top ten percent) has gone up over the last ten years.

It is about choices. The unemployment rate for people with Bachelors degrees is 4%. So that choice you made to drop out of college is affecting your ability to make a living. How is your choice a problem caused by the "rich"? And if you have a college degree then you are employed or there is something else wrong with you.

<quoted text>There is no evidence they have done that and in fact the middle class in the US lives at the highest standard of living in the world's history. Even our welfare recipients qualify as "middle class" compared to entire world's population.

I suspect that what you say is a result of being sold a bill of goods by the liberal media. They have convinced you that you are being screwed when in fact you haven't been. The left wing media and democrats are trying to convince you that class warfare is what you want to wage. They are wrong and you should wake up to the fact you live in the best country in the world with the most opportunity for success.

I was simply explaining how the effective tax rate applies according to income.
I was posting to a person who didn't understand.
It's like the argument that half the people pay no tax at all. It's factually inaccurate.
Oh so now you are just stating the facts. It is accurate to say that 47% of income tax return filers get back more than they pay in.

And why don't you explain again about how the "effective tax rate applies according to income" and why you have a problem with it.

You republicans are always attacking the poor, the gays, other religions, and minorities with your hate, and greed based ideaologies. You blatently lie and cheat to claw your way to the top. You try to force everyone around you to obey your puritanical religious views that ascribe to, but never live by. You misrepresent and invent facts to manipulate people to help you get richer. And the worst of all is after you rape such a large portion of society, you always! blame the victims.
Anyone can tell who the biggest losers are...they are the people who think that everyone who is successful did it by lieing and cheating.

Trouble is everyone at the top knows they did it by being harder working and that is smarter.

1) The disparity between the rich and everybody else in America is at it's highest point since the Great Depression.
2) Despite current rhetoric, income tax rates on the top earners are at near all-time lows.
3) Despite current rhetoric, Republicans have been in support of a progressive tax system-- AND rebates to the working poor-- for decades.
4)This notion of "CLASS WARFARE" is ginned up by conservatives, to excuse the fact that they will not allow a temporary 3.6% cut for the wealthy to expire, ever-- even after Obama and the Dems agreed to extend it once, and even though it adds hundreds of billions directly onto the debt.
These are all facts. Do you not acknowledge them?
More envy and less reality. 1) The middle class in the US lives at a higher standard of living than at any time in the history of the world. Why does it matter if someone else has more as long as you have enough?

2)Rates are lower for everyone including the top tier. Deductions are also lower but are much lower because of the Alternative Minimum Tax for upper income tax payers. In other words the cut the rates and at the same time cut the deductions allowed and through the Alternative Minimum Tax it hits upper income payers hardest. Go get your facts straight. That is why the percentage of all taxes paid by the top ten percent rose from 64% in 2000 to 70% in 2009. What difference does it make to you liberal income redistributors what rate is paid as long as the top tier is paying more than any other group.

3) Is a non sequitor. No one has said a thing about cutting the earned income tax credit. But as long as you want to talk "fair" what is fair about you working part time and getting food stamps when you are capable of working full time and not needing them? I am paying your food bill.

23% pay nothing because they’re poor. For example, a couple with two children earning less than $26,400 will pay no federal income tax this year because their $11,600 standard deduction and four exemptions of $3,700 each reduce their taxable income to zero.
10% are elderly and pay nothing because their Social Security benefits are exempt from federal income taxes.
7% pay nothing thanks to provisions in the tax code designed to benefit low-income families: the earned income tax credit, the child credit, and the childcare credit account.
The other 6% benefit from tax-exempt interest, itemized deductions, education credits, other credits; and reduced rates on capital gains and dividends.

That doesn't include part-time workers under 15 yrs old or retired seniors who work a few hrs a week to supplement their social security.

That’s whom the Republicans want to tax: poor families and the elderly, those least able to afford the tax increases. The shocking aspect of these facts is the existence of such a huge number of people that are so poor, they balloon the percentage up to 46%.

So what you are saying it it isn't 47% of tax filers pay no income tax. It is 46%. I don't see your complaint.

You liberals do worse distortions. You guys point to Buffet who's effective tax rate is 17% because it is all cap gains or dividends and complaining that the "rich" don't pay their fair share when most rich people pay almost 50% when state taxes are included.

Or you complain about the rate on dividends when dividends are what is left over after the corporation has already paid income taxes. In other words if a corporation has a ten million dollar profit it first pays federal and state taxes and then distributes the dividend where more state and federal taxes are paid. The money gets taxed twice and the combined amount is well over 50%. Recognition of that double layer of taxation is why dividends have always been taxed at a lower rate.

Yes. That's the blatantly simplistic view.
But if the government is "We the People", why shouldn't it reflect our values? Conservatives have NO problem trying to limit the freedoms of others, or trying to inject their religious and social views in law.
Why then, do they only balk when it comes to living out Christ's actual edicts?
Very true and the other thing is - Jesus Christ was prolly the most Liberal person to ever walk the earth !

1) You said there was "no evidence" that wealth was being re-distributed from the poor and middle class to the wealthy due to our current tax code and policies. My point addressed that specifically. Now your taking my statement and claiming it's "envy" and features "less reality". Which makes no sense, at all. Do you acknowledge the FACT that the income disparity between the wealthiest 1% is greater than any time since the Great Depression, or do you not?
2)Is that why Mitt Romney pays 13.9% in taxes on an income of $11 million, which he did nothing whatsoever to earn (it was paid out of a blind trust), yet someone making $190K pays 33% on their salary? And why do you talk about "the percentage of all taxes" the wealthy paid going up, as if it's relevant, yet ignore the fact that the growing income disparity gap causes it? That's nonsensical, and devoid of reason.
3)REALLY? "No one's talking about the EITC"?? Is that why you and every other conservative boob parrots the notion about "50% of Americans paying no income tax", and pols from Romney to Bachmann to Ryan to Boehner saying that the poor "need to get some skin in the game" on taxes? Your position lacks credibility. And BTW-- I have never taken a single dollar in assistance, in my life. So you've NEVER bought me anything. Welfare is not a Democratic phenomenon. LOTS of poor conservative red-staters get it, too.
4) Wait. You failed to acknowledge this one, altogether. Didn't bother to address that the Bush tax cuts were WRITTEN TO BE TEMPORARY, because they knew if they were extended the deficit would skyrocket. So what happened, Genius? Why is it fair to keep letting the rich pay less, and get more... while WE all pay for their tax breaks, in the form of $750 BILLION of new debt that goes onto the deficit. You've never bought ME a damn thing-- but you are continuing to pay for that extra 3.6% that people like Romney, Buffet, Soros, etc. all get. Try a dose of reality.

I'm rich, so I have lots of spare time to fight Republican fascism.
