Steve, most of the time, we hear nothing but insults and disdain for the people in "fly-over" country. There is no shortage of insults daily for those that don't live on either coast, or in a city. My family came from a rural area. The constant barrage of insults from sitcoms, movies, stand-up comics and the media in general are unbelievable!! So if Sarah Palin offers some praise for people in small towns you get your undies in a twist? Notice she didn't say you were bad, Steve, just that country people are good. As usual, a media person who gets their feelings hurt not because they were insulted, but because you didn't get the praise you wanted. OK, here goes - you are good Steve. Cities are good Steve. Can you stop the the sniveling, holier than thou attacks now Steve?

I think Mr. Chapman's points regarding drug and alcohol abuse in rural areas are warranted in light of Ms. Palin's (and others') attempts to spin rural life as somehow more "pure and wholesome" than urban life. that's a generalization that cannot be made, yet I'm sure I'll hear it from Gov. Palin during tonight's debate.
there's not room for everything in one column, but it would be appropriate to look at the "why" regarding rural drug and alcohol abuse-- is it because of lack of economic opportunity/poverty? I'm guessing this is part of the reason why, therefore these problems would in fact show a similarity between urban and rural areas. |

What no LIBERAL CHIC. I'm shocked. Small town snobbery??? Seems like "Urban Envy".
It's O.K. to be from a big city as long as you have a thin skin.... Then carp about SOMEONE ELSE being a snob.. Poor ole Stevie snobby is as snobby whines!!!! Why is it that all these so called sophisticates are such whinners??? |

Unfortunately Drug and Alcohol abuse is a national problem. It is not just a city or rural problem. About 15 years ago an official of the South Shore Line Railroad told our group that almost 22% of all job applicants could not pass a simple Drug and Alcohol Test. The railroad were told by their Consultants at that time that they were below the national average. A little over 24% of job applicants could not pass the drug exam nationally. |

I believe more folks were killed in Chicago so far this year than soldiers in Iraq this year. Don't throw stones in a glass house. The city has nothing to offer excepthigh taxes, rude people and gridlock. I am glad we cancelled our subscription in favor of the Herald!

Who cares what big city and rural snobs think? Other than many on the forum that have those same snobby attitudes, chapmans article hit the mark by taking your eye off of substance issues and onto fluff.
Putting the sloganeering aside - Palin's looks good but is an idiot. Obama looks good, isn't an idiot, but has zero experience at anything but running for office (even that's relatively limited). Biden and McCain look horrible but are true insiders with experience. So go out and read the lies they call position papers and pick your poison! |

Classic lines in here. QUOTE Sir Nigel traces the ambition of Mr Obama, 47, to reach the White House right back to his 20s or before. "He has talked at least since the 1980s about a shot at the Presidency." END QUOTE QUOTE "His Illinois and US Senate careers give us only a few clues as to his likely priorities in office. "In the Senate he took a low profile in 2005-6, but was a diligent member of the Foreign Relations Committee, respectful and friendly to the veteran Republican Senator Lugar, with whom he travelled to London in 2005. "His voting record was decidedly liberal. But the main impression is of someone who was finding his feet, and then got diverted by his presidential ambitions." Sir Nigel later reiterates the point: "Although he has been a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for four years, and a regular attender of meetings in his first two, there is little Obama track record to refer back to." He highlights luck as a key factor in Mr Obama's rise. "He was certainly lucky in having Democratic and Republican opponents for the US Senate in 2004 who were tarnished. He was lucky that Hillary Clinton had such a bad organisation in the primary campaign, and took so long to respond to Obama's threat." END QUOTE |

Then go comment on their website. I think Chicago's a world-class city, and I'm proud of it. I've never seen people run down their community the way Republicans do in Chicago. For shame! http://enough2008.blogspot.com |
