It is truly my hope that this message is read by those you who have shown (daily) that they do not have a command of the English language. I am a Black man. I am from the south side of Chicago. I grew up in a place that makes your famed Pines Hills area look like the suburbs. I have witnessed violence (black on black, brown on brown, white on white etc). I have witnessed racism (past and current). But what I have been reading in these “article discussions” is disgraceful.
I moved to Florida 2 years ago to begin teaching. I was told by my staff at the University of Chicago that Floridians (no mention of race) were backwards and still maintained very racist views reminiscent of the “old days.” I just could not believe that people from such a beautiful place could harbor so much hate and animosity. But alas, I was wrong.
The racist language that I read daily on the Orlando Sentinels web sit is beyond appalling. I have personally contacted a few of the writers to ask why they “despise” blacks, Hispanics, foreigners, etc. The typical answer I receive is “those people are animals, they deserve to die.” I took my inquire a bit further and asked if they would like to meet, but they ALL declined. PITTY.
It has been my experience that people who use coarse language (online) do so because they cannot express themselves any other way (ignorant), have low self-worth (sad), low-income (poor), are generally the derelicts of society (low-life), but above all else, COWARDLY (punks). Because you know you would not say a word if you saw “those people” in front of you. Instead you wait until you get behind a keyboard to spew your repugnant jargon.
So tell me Orlando folks (and readers of the Orlando Sentinel). Are Floridians really this dense or are these aforementioned folks truly the “bottom of the barrel”?
I am a white man from South Florida (why that matters I do not know but since you had to make it clear what race you are then there you go). You seem to have an elitist, condescending, arrogance about your speak. What is it that you find "backwards, appalling, poor English, disgraceful and blah blah blah" Is it that just because some do not tow the Obama nonsense they are in your superior view, racist? You see, Liberals such as yourself will always find a way to make those that disagree with you on race issues a racist. That is what we ignorant masses call the race card. And your use of it is pitiful and ignorant and self centered. You are insignificant and of no consequence. Take a hike.
Who knows

Are you really as dense as to characterize all Floridians as racist and backwards based upon some comments posted on anonymous message boards? Really, if you want to introduce a valid discussion topic this isn't the way to begin.

Obama is 46 years old, so if he's been going to this church for 20 years, he started going when he was 26. How many of you hold the exact same beliefs and opinions now as you did 20 years ago?

I agree. And this certainly isn't the first time whitey has been dissed in this church. Now all of a sudden Obama acts surprised. I'm not buying it.

Nice try, but your hate shines through!

Think about this, a radio talk show host (who I don't listen to), says "nappy headed hoes" and he gets fired! For goodness sake he is a "shock jock" type!

Obama supports (financially), attends his services, excepts his advise and uses him has an advisor/pastor for twenty years, is he stepping down? No!

Your hate will never set you free!

I would just like to point out to you - that an awful lot of "Floridians" are native to Chicago, New York and other points NORTH.*Not* Florida at all. I have lived here over 20 years, and FWIW, witnessed MORE racism in NY than I have seen/heard living down here. NY'ers fancy themselves progressive. Except that they all still live in racially divided neighborhoods. And whoa-is-the-man who sells his house to a member of another race.

Some of the sermons were last year and this year. Obama is running for President.

So yeah, it matters that he stayed around it for 20 years, that suggests his views on this haven't changed.

I have the same beliefs I did 20 years ago. What is your point? Obama kept going to this church and was well aware of the hate being preached. I just can't understand how anyone can defend that. And I don't believe Rev. Wright actually believes the garbage he spews, but he knows it will keep his "flock" angry and keep the money flowing. I wonder what kind of house he lives in? I read he drives a Porsche. Perhaps he could just drive a Ford or Chevy and help the poor! LOL Obama and Wright are charlatans and their "own" people don't realize it.

Why won't Obama wear an America flag lapel pin yet during his little speech he had flags surrounding him? Hypocritical political two faced dance. Transparent.

It all boils down to one simple fact: If you can't tell much about a person you just met, you can gain a whole lot of insight into just what and who he or she is by he people that they keep company with - who their closest friends are and I've seen all I need to see looking at the zoo at Trinity United Church of Christ - with the laughter and the giggling and the primates hopping around in glee at every word this POS uttered in his rants and raves against whites, jews, America etc. - You'd think they were all on drugs, in ecstasy saying what Wright was saying as he danced around. Talk about a primitive church, this was it, and anybody thinks that this didn't rum off one bit on young Mr. Barack Hussein Obama and Michelle over the years is B.F.N.

It wasn't one Sunday 20 years ago, it has been many Sundays from today back over the past 20 years.

He must hold some of the beliefs / values of the Church to stay a current member.

As reported; even Oprah who supports Obama, quit this church some time ago due to the beliefs that are held.

he's not stepping down, but he did get fired as an advisor to obama...so in escence it's the same...
I didn't agree with Imus getting fired.

This reverend's sermons have obviously been, for whatever his reason is, more racially charged since obama decided to run.

Now all we need to do is hold hands and sing, right? They demanded and had Dog the Bounty Hunter taken off the air for making some remarks in private (this is just one example, the list goes on), yet I don't hear Jesse or Al or anyone in the black community asking Rev. Jeremiah Wright to step down after all of the disparaging remarks he's made, not only about whites, but about our country as a whole. In fact, these people, including Obama, are still standing behind him. Seems like a double standard to me.
Rev. Wright is retired as pastor from the church and dropped from the Obama campaign.
