Something needs to be done NOW to make sure officiating gets better in MLS. It is horribly inconsistent and the same officials get to keep doing games. People make mistakes, but to make such frequent errors, it outrageous. If they were players, they would get benched or cut. If they were working in a "real world" job they would get fired in no time.
I watch every Crew game and have also seen 80% of all league matches this year. I also watch various European leagues frequently. So, I think it is fair to say that based upon what I have seen, the officials calling MLS games, as a whole, are a joke in comparison to European officials. When the referees in Europe make a mistake it is news and a huge talking point. When an MLS official makes a mistake, it is commonplace and just thrown on top of the heap of other terrible calls they have made. It appears to me that the cronyism among the top levels of US Soccer and the top "officials" is preventing the improvement of the officiating. However, MLS sitting idly by is equally complicit in this sham.(Yes, the league hired 4 "full-time" officials - I'm sure with the help of U.S. Soccer and their cronies, not independently.) The NCAA isn't scared to suspend bad football officiating crews. MLB was willing to take umpiring the World Series away from an official that made two bad calls during the post-season. It took "Blanco-gate" and giving a water break in the middle of the Dynamo-Real game to get Jair Marrufo canned for the year (only about 1/3 of the seaason). Ricardo Salazar keeps getting appointments so he can make each and every game about him (I've only seen the man officiate ONE good match involving the Crew), not the players. And I'm sure Kevin Stott (Sunday's ref) will get a pat on the back and do playoff games the next 2 or 3 weeks. There are rabid Crew fans, but there aren't enough total for the league to care about the Crew. They would rather focus on the locations in the huge markets (LA [GAL & CHV], NYC, HOU, CHI) and/or those heavily drawing fans (SEA, LA, TOR, DC, SLC). The 4 worst officiated Crew games this year came against the Mexican Hunchback's team (in April), an LA team (CHV)(in June), the Sounders (10/03) to assure them of passage into the playoffs, and a northeast team - since the Red Bulls were just so bad, no officiating could help them - assuring those clowns' passage into the playoffs on Sunday. Could they have been more obvious in making sure that that happened? Is Brian Carroll supposed to amputate his arms so that the ball can't play it when they are down at his side? How is a push committed by a red, white, and blue player at one end not a foul, but on the ensuing breakaway a push of the same magnitude and type committed by a Crew player is one, for example? These terrible calls are not coming against San Jose, or Colorado, or Kansas City. Kindof makes you wonder. I love soccer and the Crew. I have gone to games since 1996 when I was a youth soccer player. But if they have to play against 12 people on the field on a regular basis, and need to play a perfect game to win, why should I drive the 6-hour round trip to games and buy tickets subsidize this league? I'll stay at home and watch the EPL, La Liga, the UEFA Champions League, etc. In the end, If the Crew play like they have over the last month and the officiating is as bad as it has been this year - they won't make it out of the first round. |

Real Salt Lake dosen't draw well and you have no proof to back up what you just said so your point is moot. You say you love the Crew but won't support the league. That dosen't even make sense. Just because of a couple dumb refs doen't mean you have to give on your team because of the league. In all sports leagues all the refs suck. It's been that way forever and it will never change but people still root on their teams despite the bad offication. So you shouldn't stop rooting for the Crew just because of a couple dumb hacks called officials.
