A falling out of two titans

It was an uncomfortable moment between former friends and comrades in battle, Vince Fumo and Dick Sprague.
They ran into each other at developer Peter DePaul's annual Christmas party, a must-attend event for the region's power elite. Egged on by a new girlfriend who wanted to meet Sprague, Fumo reluctantly walked over to the über-lawyer and stuck out his hand.

Mr. Fumo, one of the most powerful and influential Democrats in the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania, has alleged that his prosecution by U.S. Attorney Patrick Meehan was motivated by
improper political considerations.

According to a memorandum submitted to Chairman Conyers and Subcommittee Chair Sánchez by Mr. Fumo’s counsel, U.S. Attorney Meehan “is a long time Republican operative, who personifies the term ‘loyal Bushie.’”

This memorandum argues that U.S. Attorney Meehan pursued Mr. Fumo and other state Democrats while ignoring “clear evidence of more egregious misconduct by Republicans."

Mr. Fumo also asserts that the arrests of two of his staffers raised additional questions of whether these actions were timed to boost Senator Rick Santorum’s reelection campaign.

Mr. Fumo is set to go to trial in September on a 139-count indictment charging him with defrauding taxpayers and two nonprofit organizations, and with attempting a coverup to obstruct the FBI investigation.
