there is no need for a federal fund. what is necessary is a reduction of exposure on the coast. if people build high value properties in wind prown areas, they will need to pay the piper

Well, not everyone wants to live in Kansas. Alot of us are here because of jobs, not retirement. This would also help people who are victims of tornadoes and floods, which are very unpredictable...
This is an excellent idea by Gov Crist. But I am not shocked that Bush is against it.
Can't we use some of the war money to help our own people here in America?

No matter where you live, you are prone to some kind of natural disaster, whether it be earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, mudslides, hurricanes, snow storms, and not to mention hurricanes and tornadoes...

...another plan for the rich. They'll be buying investment homes along the beach and rivers etc.; so the average working class "JOE" can rebuild them. Same principle as Citizens Insurance by Florida. People should research before they buy and buy at their own risk, pay for their own insurance and accept their own responsibilities. People move to Florida and tell me they bought some cheap land with some swamp grass on it - DUH - go figure!!!

I've often suggested that one simple way of lessening the insurance liability for coastal, hurricane prone areas is to simply declare them to be uninsurable for windstorm and flooding insurance - period. You elect to buy there, build there you only can get fire, theft, vandalism and liability coverage. If you suffer loss due to wind or flooding, you pay it out of your own egg money.

Is it just totally impossible to respond to a Blog post nowadays without a textbook liberal Democrat slam with the ever popular "working JOE" pitted agains the ugly, nasty, filthy RICH "they" persons.
The implication plainly being that these "RICH" weren't working people themselves but won life's lottery and just out of "luck" happened to get money from the sky while they ate their brie and sipped their chablis by the seashore ? Maybe if you had made some better choices in life yourself, studied a little more diligently, got a job besides washing cars, or flipping burgers, stayed away from beer and weed and proved yourself to a boss as a reliable, dedicated, hard worker and saved your money, you could be the one investing in a beach property for your family like they did. They didn't rip anybody off to get there, they EARNED IT.

blah..blah..blah. By finding or creating loopholes in the law and taking advantage of programs designed to help those in need. Ya, they EARNED IT. We see the white coller crime going up and CEO's laying off thousands but still getting their bonus's. Ya, they EARNED IT!! And by the way I'm not a textbook "liberal", and I don't take advantage of disadvantaged people - I spent many year helping those in need.

I don't live near the coast and everyone in Pensacola or 85% of us sustained damage. I can't believe someone would be rude enough to suggest that Ivan didn't happen and we didn't suffer.

Yes we need a national solution. This is the same as health care. There are people who are so stupid they claim to be republican because they own their own lawn business and make $6 an hour.

Yes we need to spread risk. In fact we need to abolish insurance companies. Don't tell me they create money. No they tie it up. Americans are not saving.

I've talked to other people in other countries who have national healthcare. The government takes a big chuck of change out of their paycheck leaving them very little to live on. To many who are healthy it's a disadvantage compared to those who smoke, drink or who are considered high risk. It draws all people down to one level rewarding no one for proper diet and exercise. As for the national catastrophe fund it would turn out the same as many argue. There's got to be a solution, but I think it will only put a band-aide on the real problem with this fund.

We already (*the homeowner*) pay.
Forced to pay for those who DECIDE to build along invariably catostrophic areas.

Rubio already took care of that by making those who cannot afford to "play" on the beach in their condo's. We subsidize CITIZENS insurance so others can rebuild after a GUARANTEED hurricane - via increases in our own insurance rates.

We also pour tons of money into beach replenishment (via shady contracts with PRIVATE chosen firms)- one inch of sand restoration increases property values by 10k - a great investment for those who have VACATION homes but pay the least in florida taxes. All the time they are fighting in court (again at TAXPAYERS expense) to close access to those very people who SUBSIDIZE the beachfront). And we are programmed to belittle the "welfare" citizens of this country? Sad

Now we have the big push to EASE these very lucrative part-time homeowners with "tax relief"?

bouledoux1==back up,not all rich people slaved at low wage jobs,or worked hard all their life to get where they are today. There are those who were "handed" family money, those who gained through illegal drug money, those who chose to steal monies and not get caught, those who prey on the weak of society. Putting all rich people in the light of being hard workers is unfair to people who work hard, and can't seem to get there. No offense, but, you are believing what you want to believe .
