My post from another forum (come over there so we don't have two running):
Abraham Lincoln helped to found the Republican party in 1854 and was the first Republican president. It's well known that he was the president that freed the slaves. In fact there was a more radical faction of the Republican party who wanted stiffer penalties levied on the Southern slave owners / confederates.
The predominant party in the south was the Democratic party. Most slave owners were Democrats. After the Civil War, there was a lot of resentment amongst them against the Reconstruction plans and the KKK grew as a reaction to combat the "menace" of the newly freed blacks.
Now does this say that the Democrats, as a whole, were responsible for starting and perpetuate the KKK? I don't think that's necessarily fair, but people should understand the history of both parties with respect to slavery before they buy into Democratic rhetoric about the Republicans being "racist" or "not for minorities" because that is aboslutely false.
