This is not the answer.
In reality, this will only be a CASH cow for state and local governments to be able to raise needed funds in the guise of traffic tickets. I would find it hard to believe Warner would actually drive 55 mph, even now. |

Work on eliminating bottle necks on our highways to reduce the likelihood of traffic backups. Synchronize lights to improve traffic flow. Most cars have great aerodynamics and fuel savings between 55 and 70 are very small. The key to good gas mileage is reducing the need to accelerate and braking. Setting the speed limit to the 85th percentile of drivers will greatly enhance safety and fuel economy because 85% of vehicles will all be going roughly the same speed.
Set the speed limit to 55, it is guaranteed that 90 of drivers will ignore and deviate from that speed and at the same time create tension and disrespect for the law and law enforcement. |

Bring back the 55 mph law & it will be just like it was last time, the CHP will single out the easier catches, truckers. |

Dream on, aint nobody gonna drive 55. Life is lived in the fast lane so get used to it. |

You sure take a lot for granted hailing from 3,000 miles away. Sorry Holmes, you don't know Californians like I do ;>) |

Judged: 1 1 1 Life is exciting in the slow lane too. Love planet Earth & it showers gifts of beauty to my eyes continually. Going slower, I get to see that beauty longer. I have many extraordinary landscape photos because I look at it slowly as I feather foot along my way. I gain 20% better MPG than lead footers. My small cars extend my MPG edge extraordinarily with my last 3 mountain traveling tanks of gas averaging 51.3 MPG. The last tank gave 50.8MPG while traversing mountain ups & downs of 11,000 feet! One slow Honda Fit driver averages 48MPG. One Toyota Yaris driver nailed down 60MPG while traveling thru Yellowstone Nat'l Park...slowly. Fast is not better. Burning up the highway, only burns up your fuel. I'll keep my fuel money in my pocket, so I can travel further than you & explore more than you. You don't need to pay a big Hybrid price to get Hybrid MPG. Just drive smarter & slower. |

I used to know a guy who had a volkswagen rabbit diesel, I envied him so much when he could drive from Everett, Wa. to Riverside, Ca. on 24 gallons of fuel. With my Ford Ranger I would drive that same distance going the same speed 65 mph on that same interstate traveling the same exact route and burn no less than 51 gallons. Diesel cars as well as the price of diesel fuel here in Caleefornia cost a little bit more but are damn well worth it in the long run. |

This is also a way too general of a statement. Maximum efficiency of many cars are above 55, it depends on the engine and the gear ratios of the individual cars. The fuel efficiently stats you give are way to general. My car for instance at 55 is well within 4th gear (not the most efficient). Driving 55 in 5th is more costly in fuel since 55 is so far out of my car's powerband that to regulate that speed in 5th I needed to give it all the gas I could at times. Not very efficient either. For my car the the lowest end of the powerband in 5th where I could easily (relatively) regulate the speed was around 65. |

I test drove the Rabbit diesel once. Didn't like the smokey pollution or noise. Consumer Reports said the Rabbit had some reliability problems too. Feather footers could drive the Rabbit diesel(& small gas cars) from Everett to Riverside using less than 24 gallons. I-5 is boring. I travel into eastern Washington, Oregon & California for unique experiences & photos...probably hit Idaho, Utah, Nevada & Arizona while on my way to Riverside. Fifty plus MPG cars, 55MPH speeds & feather footing lets you stay away from clogged roads, enjoying the beauty & wildness still available in the U.S. |

Judged: 1 1 It would save more fuel than the Obamatrons could by inflating everyone's tires. Maybe we should try doing both. And drilling for more oil offshore and in ANWR. |
There you go! & a few tricks for hills, keeps the hills from taking a lot of MPG away too. Make sure your timing belt & sparkplug wires are in good condition(change them after 60,000 miles) & pump tires up a bit. |
|
I give MPG tips on my car's websites, including slowing your cars down. Used to get the razzberry all the time. Now people seek me out for more MPG tips. Several people who used to move fast, have stated their MPG went up 10% to 20% by slowing down & feather footing. |

This is the talk of people with 44 gallon belch-fire super polluter vehicles. My 10 gallon car will travel further than the belchers. It is the belch-fire super polluters that force the oil companies to dig deeper for expensive oil. It is the belch-fire super polluters going 85MPH that make children who live, school & play near freeways(what a misnomer) sicker than more fortunate children who are further from freeways. |

Judged: 1 1 1 I know damn well how to drive a standard shift. I autocross on many weekends and have been to many open track days, and know quit a bit about physics too (Principia is sitting on my bookshelf)! And you need to stop assuming everyone is driving your car. Your inscribing of the ONE physical property of air resistance as the ONLY factor in fuel economy. That shows how little you do know about cars. Yet you arrogantly try to talk down to me as if you’re the one who’s torn down and rebuilt several cars. And yes my powerband statement IS accurate. Maybe on your car 5th is an overdrive, but that does not hold true universally (and certainly not on mine even with a stock transmission). Some non-performance passenger cars and sedans use an overdrive 5th gear, but are ALL cars non-performance sedans (and even today many of them are using higher ratio 5th and even 6th gears)? I’m sure you think so. Sorry if that doesn’t jive with what you want to believe but go ask any race mechanic (or any mechanic) about when a car gets it’s most efficient fuel economy. Aerodynamics is just ONE factor among many. Why the hell do you think race drivers start to “short shift” to stretch out their fuel? For the aerodynamics? Now it’s nice out so I’m grabbing my cycle for a drive, maybe some one will teach me to drive a stick while I’m out. You arrogant ass! |

The Euro's all drive tiny little shoebox cars and they still have to buy oil and gas from Russia. So I guess it isn't as simple as you think. I think we will need to keep drilling for oil in this country for at least another generation or two. |

Juvenile desires to get from point a to b as quickly as you can, I don't think so. But of course I'm not a Gore hugging, bleeding heart, blame it all on mankind global warming nonsense liberal either. |

Nah I don't agree. It was the manufacturers of these behemoths that shoved them down your throat. afterall, the bigger they come, the more profit there is to make off each unit. I drive by my local Ford dealer everday going to work, his bullpen is jammed full of explorers & expeditions collecting dust, poor fellow , he can't even give 'em away at cost now. |
