If you are suggesting the surge worked, or at least seems to have, I agree.

I am overjoyed it worked, I hope it continues to prove successful. While I have always voted Democrat, McCain's view of Iraq is one reason I support him, I have misgivings on some other issues, but on Iraq, he in my view, has it correct.

Sounds like Catholic guilt also. I'm neither, but this is an interesting thought and I'm going to go with you on it. Guilt can be dealt with in many ways, including the way you stated above. As children, we are made to feel guilty about behavior that is inappropriate. The idea is not to hang on to the guilt, but move forward in a more beneficial, learned way. A criminal who feels no remorse or guilt for his actions is likely to steal or murder again.

So, there is a benefit to the emotion of guilt in that it inspires change, usually for the better. We all share the guilt for some of the actions done by our country and it's up to us to find a different path that will be less harmful and of greater benefit to this country.

As an end note, yes, because of his actions during his 7 years as president, I do distrust anything Bush says and does. He hasn't given me any reason to do otherwise. And it worries me that he seems incapable of feeling guilt over the grievous harm he has done, so, in my mind he's a pathological criminal.
