This sentence tells you ALL you need to know about the way Congress spends OUR $$$$$... "Separately, House and Senate appropriators were discussing providing $1 billion to a supplemental war funding bill for the "cash for clunkers" program, which aims to generate about 1 million new auto sales. Since the yearlong vehicle program is expected to cost $4 billion, lawmakers would attempt to find the additional money later this year...." This whole thing is a joke anyway. Who REEEELY feels comfortable buying a Obama Moters or FIAT, er, Chrysler right now, even with $4500... If they were serious about spurring the economy, Congress should include used car purchases as well.. Get ready folks.. Just the beginning of govt subsidies on vehicles Americans DON'T want!!

Why would anyone who does not have a car payment even want to buy a new vehicle that only gets a few more mpg and wind up with a car payment and still have to buy gas. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Keep the money in your pocket

Absolutely ridiculous plan. Democrats are racking up reasons why they will be voted out in the next election cycle. Complete waste of money.

Why not just let them trade their old cars for a new Goverment Motors lemon. Then you can charge the taxpayers. Money is free right?

Where are they going to come up with all the money for those vouchers? And is this bill just to help in the bailout of Government Motors, Chrysler and the UAW? It seems that the Democrats, who are now in control, are just like the Republicans before them. They are spending money like drunken sailors who finally had shore leave after 6 months at sea.

I wonder if this will apply to all car brands or only those brands owned by the government? The level of incompetence shown by this administration knows no bounds.

Another case of printing money out of thin air. Bond markets are already nervous that they will be paid back with funny money. This just adds fuel to the fire.
I hate feel good legislation that only makes us poorer in the long run.

Absolute stupidity! Is this another Charlie Rangel inspired con? Just imagine the bureaucracy and fraud that will surely follow from such a plan.
To DC - stay out of our lives! I don't want my taxes used to subsidize my neighbor's purchase of a Prius.

Brilliant idea... that already failed a decade ago. The State of California tried this one, as did Unocal and Chevron in exchange for carbon credits. Most of the cars that were brought in were classics that didn't run - i.e., they weren't using any foreign oil or emitting any pollution. A collector could have snapped up some of those "clunkers" as restoration projects or used them as sources for hard to find parts, and instead they're gone forever.

No problem... I can can wait. I need to replace a couple of our family cars {one an aging SUV made by GM, a Chevy - which I'd NEVER buy another product from}. If the taxpayer's want to subsidize my purchases of a couple of new{er} cars, great, I'll gladly accept their money to buy something made in Germany or Japan [that run, are reliable, etc, etc]. Americans are such fools.

Another policy modeled after one created in Europe. We need more of these, most European countries are projected to be paying out ~50% of their GDP in government benefits by 2050. Keep up the spending the Europeans are still in the lead! www.stopkillingourdollar.com

If this stupid legislation will give me an extra $3,500 to trade my 2007 Ford F150 in for a 2009 model, I'm all for it! The new models get 2 more miles per galon on the highway - yipee! I'm not only lucky to have a federal government who prefers to waste tax dollars in ways like this, I can also now claim to be helping the environment too! Don't bitch at me while I drive my big truck you environmental nuts, the government is paying me to drive this one!
I'm a middle class guy who uses my truck, not for a living but for hauling household necessities and items for liesure and pleasure purposes (if you know what I mean). As an employed American, myself, my children and grandchildren will be stuck paying for the government's giveaway ignorance so why not take advantage of a deal like this!
I guess I'll join in the fun and become a liberal left leaning government leach and get my share of this.

This is why the government should not have become involved. Seriously, they are using our tax money in order to give incentives for selling cars? That is ridiculous. "This Sunday only, Crazy Feds Crazy Autos is giving away money, just push or pull your old clunker in and we'll give you $4500"

After bailing out my neighbor for the mortgage he can't afford and paying his kid for a summer make work job now I get to pay for him to buy a car he can't afford. Anyone else getting a little tired of the free money democrats?
It is a good thing that Obozo is only getting involved in the "fundamental" decisions of the auto industry.

First, BHO is going to ask you to turn in your gas guzzler (what a misnomer, my first car was a 1968 Chevy that got nine mpg, how many of thsoe cars are still on the highway) by issuing vouchers. If that doesn't work, he is just going to come into your drive way and tow it away. Don't worry about the logisitics or legality of that, he will just do it.
