Senate keeps 'cash for clunkers' proposal alive

Full story: Newsday

Congress approved a "cash for clunkers" program yesterday to provide government incentives of $3,500 to $4,500 to motorists who trade in their gas guzzlers for more fuel-efficient vehicles after Senate Democrats narrowly defeated a Republican effort to kill the plan.

"Cash for Clunkers" another democrat dream on how to spend the taxpayers money. Since January the democrats have done nothing but dream uo new ways to spend taxpayer money and no one way to save money. Obozo and the democrat clowns in Congress are totally out of control and their spending spree

So these cars/trucks are sent to the dump to get them off the road, right?
Yea, thought so. Another brain dead scheme, give one guy money not to drive it then let someone else buy it and put it back on the road. How stupid are these people?

This is one of the worst pieces of legislation ever devised. It rewards folks who bought wasteful pickups & SUVs (since many new models get better gas mileage the new vehicles will qualify.
I drive a 1999 Dodge Neon; and I'm planning on buying a Camry.
For being sensible I get nothing.

Unlike most Republicans who adamantley follow anything their leaders say like sheep, right or wrong, I am a Democrat and can admit we are not always on the right track. Here you have people who bought these huge monstrosity cars to one up their neighbors, with no care for the environment, and now they are rewarded with 3,500 to 4,500, while those who actually used our heads when purchasing their cars get nothing. Ridiculous. Let them keep paying for them and look like the fools they are.

You are wrong on your statment, "Unlike most Republicans who adamantley follow anything their leaders say like sheep, right or wrong". Bush caused more controversy with the republicans and his supporters. So far anything Obozo has proposed has flown through Congress i.e. Stimulus Bill, GM Bailout, Chrysler Bailout. Just listen to the major networks Obozo can do no wrong and the reporters are tripping over each other trying to out do each other in false praise of this sahme of a president and I was no fan of G.W. Bush.

OK.... so the bill includes 108 BILLION dollars for the IMF, the International Monetary Fund, and all Newsday wants to mention is the $4,500 'cash for clunker' section of this legislation? The great and exalted Comrade Obama and his band of Democratic power grabbers are further mortgaging our children's futures and all you think we are entitled to know is that we can get money towards a new car??!!!
Where are Newsday's priorities? How do the Democrats get all of you in the lame stream media to carry his water all of the time? Don't you feel any responsibility to your readers, to the citizens of this country?

thank you. you save me having to write a long response to her silly words. If not for Republican and independant disagreement with GW's policies, young Obama would not be where he is today.

I believe the goal of the bill is to reduce consumption of oil, increase jobs, and improve the environment. This legislation will decrease costs related to damage of the environment and the health of the citizens. BTW...smaller cars = less fatalities and insurance costs. There are many hidden benefits to this plan. The President is visionary. I am thankfull that we finally have a President who sees the big picture and problem solves efficiently. Lets not forget that Mr Obama INHERITED massive problems.

I'd say that many of out politicians are "clunkers", so can we trade them in and get $4,500 for our efforts?

And the plan also puts people in debt. After your $4500 credit, you still have to take a $20000 loan to pay off the car. People can't pay their mortgage, how will they be able to make a car payment? The deal is nothing more than another auto bailout.....

The post in incorrect.

Smaller cars not only are involved in more accidents, the damage severity to the vehicle and the passengers are substatially greater than larger vehicles.

In order to assess the likelihood of big liability and damage payouts to drivers of individual vehicles, the Highway Loss Data Institute assigned vehicles a "rating" based on a combination of the frequency of crashes and the amount of dollars paid out for collision losses.

In essence, the smaller vehicles are consistently those which lead in accident frequency and severity.

http://www.iihs.org

As for the program, it is good if your current vehicle has a resale value less than the incentive. Thus, if you can sell you current vehicle for $6,000, you will not benefit from a $4,500 incentive. Remember... you DO NOT get a trade in value of your current vehicle in addition to the cash incentive. You get the incentive INSTEAD of a dealer trade in value.

Yeah, he is a visionary all right!

Don't you think its possible, likely even, that the people who take advantage of this giveaway will simply drive more???

And, why should someone like myself, and others I know, who moved to jobs less than 10 miles from our place of work, be forced out of our 4WD trucks??

It snows alot where I live, and there are some steep hills.

We don't need a Spiritual Faith Healer to push his stupid ideas on us. High gasoline prices alone are an incentive to drive fuel efficient vehicles. When I drive long distances, I take my car, which gets good mileage.

First of all, stop with the "inherited" bs...every president inherits their fair share of problems...however, the current one is the only one who continually hides behind it as an excuse for his own failed initiatives. Second, how is destroying all of these clunkers going to help the environment? They have to end up somewhere, right? They won't just vaporize into thin air. And, I don't think that particular place is in outer space somewhere...so, we end up with another brand of environmental problem that was not anticipated and will have to be cleaned up, if that's even possible. Third, why on earth would you equate smaller cars with less fatalities. The smaller the car, the more likely you are to DIE in it if you have an accident! Run along and go look at some statistics. However, that's also pure common sense, something you seem to lack. If you're driving in a the equivalent of a tin can and you get hit by the equivalent of a tank, you're toast. No questions asked. Lastly, if your idea of a visionary problem solver is someone who taxes and spends our future generations into oblivion, then you've got a screw loose. Name one problem your fearless leader has solved since taking office. Oh, and that one problem he supposedly solved cannot be one that led to a dozen other problems in solving the original one.

As is usually the case, I completely agree with you. Additionally, what I want to know is why on earth the current administration and congress think taxpayers should bail out everything and everyone on the face of the planet? Why are my tax dollars going to help finance someone else's new vehicle, or someone else's home, or someone else's health insurance, etc? What the hell happened to personal responsibility? Is the current government allergic to it? I firmly believe that they wouldn't know what personal responsibility was if they stepped on it.

Daily Horoscope for December 22

Sagittarius

Be careful about what you eat and drink today, my prancing Archer. Your body is in a sensitive state, so be well advised and steer clear of anything that might upset you, or to which you're sometimes allergic. Avoid anyone who's a one-man germ factory, in case a few bugs happen to jump out and over to you. Right now, you could do without it.
