http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/8/17/15300... No "cross in the sand" for McCain in 1973 [Updated x2] Story unlikely to be true by Calouste Sun Aug 17, 2008 at 01:15:30 PM PDT Shortly after John McCain came back from Vietname in 1973, he wrote a detailed 12,000 word report of his experiences that was published in US IS JOHN MCCAIN IN STORY LAND? News and World Report. Even though McCain goes into a lot of detail in that story and mentions religion a few times, there is no mention of the cross in the sand story, even though it would have fitted in well with the whole narrative. There are numerous mentions of Vietnamese guards in the reports, mostly bad ones but also good ones, but there is no indication at all that any of them would have been Christian, although "[a] lot of them were homosexual". We've already known his rhetoric to be contrived and calculated. It's been well documented that his so-called POW experience was the creation of his slick and well-paid campaign handlers. McCain received special treatment because he was both the son and the grandson of an Admiral. His story of a brave and unassuming American patriot is obviously fabricated and no one with half a brain bought into these absurd fabrications. Now we come to find that he wasn't even original in his lie and that he lifted it from some Russian author. What a sleaze. Camp McCain cannot be trusted to take the reigns of this nation's executive branch. McCain's inflated ego and Karl Rove's delusions of grandeur will lead us down the road to ruin. At a crucial point in America's history, we cannot resign ourselves to write her final chapter just yet. Enough of the Rove/McCain machine. It's time we pick ourselves up by our bootstraps and march into the 21st century as the leaders of a new tomorrow. The 20th Century cannot be the "American Century". America is still destined for many more. We cannot hand the keys over to the Arabs, the Chinese or the Russians. We will act responsibly and do the right thing. I'm confident that the American people will tell those that would watch us fall for their own corrupt motives where they can shove their lies. I know Obama and the United States of America will win this election. God is on our side. Lies and fear have ruined this decade, but it can never bring down so great a nation forever. I'm a patriot and that is why I will vote for Barack Obama this November.

John McCain, Prisoner of War: A First-Person Account By John S. McCain III, Lieut. Commander, U.S. Navy http://www.usnews.com/articles/news/2008/01/2... From: Cafe, Election Central The McCain Myth of Experience By MiddleChild - June 14, 2008, 6:06PM John McCain is running for President on his one great asset, his experience and strength in military and foreign affairs. My question is, what experience, what strength? This is a man who graduated third from the bottom of his class of almost 900 students, crashed 5 planes, flew only 21 hours before he was captured and that is it. He has no military command experience, never lead any troops, and cannot even get the factions in Iraq straight when he has been corrected over and over. The only experience this man has is D.C., and that is exactly what we do not want. I want intelligence, fresh ideas, and promises kept. Senator McCain cannot even operate a computer by his own admission, but we are to trust him running our country in a global economy? The McCain who ran in 2000 is not the McCain running now. He has lost his edge, he seems at times to run off the track and he certainly is not grasping basic facts about the war. He is NOT experienced, he is just another rerun. I want a new show.

I believe their judgment regarding war and similar issues as being biased could be questioned today and in the future. McCain has the same problem yet Americans want to put his finger on the NUKE button knowing, by his own admission, that he has PTSD and has been treated for it several times and is on medication for it. Even when the diagnosis of PTSD is made it is not thought to be curable a belief held in the face of widespread evidence. Drugs have a very limited role in the treatment of PTSD and are used for depression and anxiety. Psychological treatments such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) have proven ineffective. Just one indicator of PTSD and there are others are chronic physical signs of “HYPERAROUSAL” that include sleep problems, trouble concentrating, irritability, anger, poor concentration, blackouts, difficulty remembering things, an increased tendency to being startled and hypervigilance to threat. This is something to consider in addition to his other medical conditions such as cancer in remission.

"McCain was down at the end of the table and we were talking to the head of the guerrilla group here at this end of the table and I don't know what attracted my attention," Cochran said in an interview with The Sun Herald in Biloxi, Miss. "But I saw some kind of quick movement at the bottom of the table and I looked down there and John had reached over and grabbed this guy by the shirt collar and had snatched him up like he was throwing him up out of the chair to tell him what he thought about him or whatever ... "I don't know what he was telling him but I thought,'Good grief, everybody around here has got guns and we were there on a diplomatic mission.' I don't know what had happened to provoke John, but he obviously got mad at the guy ... and he just reached over there and snatched ... him." « previous | TPM CAFÉ READER POSTS HOME | next » From: Cafe, Election Central McCain's Cross Story: Ripped off from Solzhenitsyn? By Vaughan - August 17, 2008, 3:48PM I've read a disturbing diary at dKos: "Cross in the Dirt Story Stolen from Solzhenitsyn". Rickrocket appears to make a good case that of McCain's most compelling anecdotes (and I thought most awkward--more on that later) was actually taken from Solzhenitsyn's "The Gulag Archipelago". Here's a link to the story--helpfully encaptured in a dramatic Christmas card campaign ad the McCain put together. McCain repeated that story last night. Per Rickrocket, here's the Solzhenitsyn story:.... Here's the awkward part: I thought it was incredibly manipulative, though undoubtedly moving, for McCain to tell that story in the interview. I find discussions of religion to be fascinating, but something that shouldn't be exploited for political gain. I also thought McCain shouldn't be leaning on the POW stories for sympathy. But how unseemly is it to accuse McCain of stealing this story? But how can one not? Solzhenitsyn's Gulag was written well before McCain's story came to light. Is it some divine miracle of intervention in the communist prison guard world? Probably not. A sign that McCain really has had his memories altered as in The Manchurian Candidate? Probably not... World-famous Russian author Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was sent to a Siberian prison because he criticized communism. Languishing there under intolerable conditions year after year, he decided to end his life. But suicide, he firmly believed, would be against God's will. He thought it would be better for a guard to shoot him. So at a public assembly of the prisoners, he sat in a front row, planning to get up and walk toward an exit, compelling a guard to kill him. But to his surprise, another prisoner sat down, blocking his exit. That unknown man leaned over and, to Solzhenitsyn's astonishment, drew a cross on the dirt floor. The cross! Wondering if that fellow prisoner might be a messenger from God, Solzhenitsyn resolved to endure his imprisonment. There in prison he became a Christian and was eventually set free to bear witness to the world. Are you in the grip of difficult circumstances? Have you wondered if life is worth living? HUSSAIN OBAMA and the liberal media is trying it's best to debunk the facts. It's not working. Ever notice how the liberal media has buried the fact that OBAMA is a confirmed RACIST and a confirmed fantatical rRADICAL MUSLIM? And they dare not make public that OBAMA's campaign is being financed with hundreds of millions of dollars by Syria, Teheran and Saudi Arabia.(They want their puppet in the White House). JOHN MCCAIN is a true war hero He is a true patriot He is a family man who values traditional marriage. He ist for VICTIM JUSTICE, not criminal justice. None of these can be said of OBAMA. His expertise lay in affirmative action in the Chicago chapters. http://www.nysun.com/opinion/solzhenitsy n-at-work/83117/ Solzhenitsyn at Work By JOHN McCAIN | August 4, 2008 Where did McCain get his story line? Poll How much of McCain's pandering could you take last night? Update [2008-8-17 18:4:11 by Calouste]: McCain told the same story on the 2000 campaign trail, except not about himself, as reported by the New York Times Many years ago a scared American prisoner of war in Vietnam was tied in torture ropes by his tormentors and left alone in an empty room to suffer through the night. Later in the evening a guard he had never spoken to entered the room and silently loosened the ropes to relieve his suffering. Just before morning, that same guard came back and re-tightened the ropes before his less humanitarian comrades returned. He never said a word to the grateful prisoner, but some months later, on a Christmas morning, as the prisoner stood alone in the prison courtyard, the same good Samaritan walked up to him and stood next to him for a few moments. Then with his sandal, the guard drew a cross in the dirt. Both prisoner and guard both stood wordlessly there for a minute or two, venerating the cross, until the guard rubbed it out and walked away. h/t to exmearden for finding this nugget. In his 1999 book "Faith of my fathers" John McCain tells this story in the first person though. go away, Dover - you are a pest on all the topix. your style shows what an amateur propagandist you are. You wouldn't even make it onto Karl Rove's paid poster boys, but maybe you can get free stuff from McCain's website - why don't you go look for the message of the day, and write the message that McCain wants you to send. It is a very bad thing to try to think these things up for yourself, or allow some other rightwing nut to guide you - you should take orders directly from McCain!

Look at this one: In the versions of the story that McCain published in 1999 the gun guard is wearing sandals. Is that standard Vietcong footwear? OR is that because that's what's in Sozhenitsyn's story? UPDATE: Just thought I'd ad that McCain's Campaign plagiarized recipes already in the campaign, and the hill accused McCain of plagiarizing entries from Wikipedia on Georgia. http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/8/17/174215/13...
