Obama's college math doesn't add up

Jul 27, 2012 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Politico

Early in his presidency, Barack Obama promised the United States would lead the world in college graduates by 2020 - a signature promise he's reminded people of many times since.

Why go into debt to get a college degree if you can't get a job to pay pack the debt?

Why get a job if the Governmetn gives you everything for free anyway?

Democratic Voting Enthusiasm Down Sharply From 2004, 2008

July 25, 2012
Thirty-nine percent of Democrats say they are more enthusiastic about voting than usual (meaning almost half are less motivated to vote for Obama), down from the summers of 2004 (68%) and 2008 (61%). Republicans (51%) are more enthusiastic than in 2008 (35%) but the same as in 2004 (51%).

Hahahahaahahah NBC’s newest fake poll showed Obama up 6 points after admitting they over sampled liberals by 11%. They have admitted their poll is skewed right after the new Gallup poll came out……..proving liars are liberals and liberals are liars once again.

In reality, Obama's promise that the USA would lead the world in college graduates by 2020 was 100% accurate - then he came across the Palin kids who set the curve back 10 years.

College costs have always been high, but they have skyrocketed in recent years. Obama has encouraged the cost of education to keep rising. If he was serious about pushing education,he would have started forcing education costs down the first day he took office - in The Senate. He was useless in The Senate, now he is useless in The White House.

Boards at colleges and universities, along with college presidents need to cap and reduce spending and overall costs that they burden the students and the government with. There is no reason that professors and teachers are required to be overpaid.

Our government needs to get rid of The Department of Education. The cost of grade school has also skyrocketed, while average students are not learning the basic requirements to be prepared for higher education. The government spend billions of dollars just to address this problem when they could fix it simply by removing Dept. of Education mandates and replacing them with realistic goals and expectations.

Yes he applied as a "foreign student" hence the reason he has a army of lawyers and paid 2 million dollars to keep them records sealed.

We are going to see the collapse of private universities nationwide. The only private Universities with a bullish future are the Ivy Leagues for the elite and well gifted only. 70% of those in college at this moment are utterly throwing precious time and taking very serious risks incurring massive debt. Your degree will not be worth the paper it is printed on in the very near future, prepare to accept any job you have the opportunity for. Most will be working the equivalent as a gas station attendant with the exception of Health Care.

A few items must be examined to bring this forecast into view; therefore I simply look no further than current events.

Here are just a few.

* Average tuition at four-year public colleges in the U.S. climbed 6.5 percent, or $429, to $7,020 last fall as schools apologetically passed on much of their own financial problems, according to an annual report from the College Board.

At private colleges, tuition rose 4.4 percent, or $1,096, to $26,273.(Huffington Post Oct 2009)

*Since 2004 tuition and fees have risen by up to 20%(Time Magazine)

*Because of a budget in peril, UCLA inflated college costs by 32% in November of 2009 (AP)

* College tuition has increased by more than three times the rate of inflation for the last 20 years, despite U.S. wages flat-lining since 2000.(Forbes Magazine)

This begs the question: why did prices increase to these obscene levels in the first place?(Hint: for the same reasons the real estate boom happened):

Despite the best intentions, Government intervention distorts free market principles and creates zero incentive for businesses to lower costs or modify services.

The straw man argument typical consists of “Well, if Government didn’t provide loans, no one would be able to afford college”.

Again, I simply fall back to the free market model to demonstrate the fallacy in that claim. For if the government were to exit the student aid market, enrollment would fall through the floor. Students who were unable to attend college in the first place, without Government aid, would not enroll forcing pressure on the Universities to bring down costs to meet demand.

*Many students today must undertake massive debt in order to pay for the cost of their college education. We will continue to see an increase in the amount of debt a student must incur, as colleges continue to inflate their costs and the Government expands its role in the loans market.

*The average student enrolling in college starting in the year 2012, will accumulate debt so massive that he or she will not be able to afford in a lifetime because most of the jobs available will be low wage! Yes, that is correct.

*Despite the increase in the cost of attending college, enrollment will continue to skyrocket in the short-term and then fall of a cliff by 2015.

*Every college in the nation will continue to inflate prices at a significant rate in the coming years as personal revenue falls. Because fewer will be able to afford costs, pressure will be put on the Government to step in to fill the void, which they will CERTAINLY do without any hesitation.

Instead of a liberal arts curriculum, young people nation will learn marketable skills such as farming/agriculture, animal raising, craft, steelwork, construction. This will be called the Second Industrial Revolution, as America’s future economy will depend heavily on export with the chief export being agricultural goods.

We are going to see a new establishment of trade schools nationwide. These “schools” will specialize in the marketable skill areas mentioned above. Those who choose to diversify their skill portfolio will have the greatest employment opportunity as we see a shift from the (PhD, MS, MBA, BA, etc) to (Intensive Pastoral Farming, Shifting Cultivation, Dairy Farming, Plantation or Tree Farming, Woodcraft and interior construction, etc)

This will not only be an affect of the bursting of the college tuition bubble, but the government debt bubble. The productive capacity of America was replaced over the last five decades. Instead of skilled laborers willing to put in a 40 hour blue collar work week, we have millions of Americans who spend their time shuffling papers and living a life of mediocrity in the corporate world doing whatever they have to just to get their next paycheck. We get paid, for the most part, to provide a service, not a tangible product. This is America Today!

Everyone knows that America would be a perfect workers paradise with 1% unemployment, 30.00/hr unskilled jobs and perky breasts and cold beer for all if only Fox news didn't voice the concerns of millions of Americans.

Perhaps we should look to the nature of degrees offered by US institutions for clues as to why recent college graduates don't dominate in the job market.

Through the generations in the US students have lost touch with what skills and know how are actually valuable to employers and a global marketplace. Perhaps as mentioned in earlier responses learning a specific trade would make graduates more marketable than a very liberal education which includes many general education requirements.

That being said, If students get useless degrees or don't properly market themselves when looking for a job, it's not the University's fault. I agree with your opinion on this. Motivation and marketability play a large role in pursuing post-college employment.

Listening to a Rethuglican / Teabagger talk about education is like listening to The Wasilla Quitta talk about Russia.
