Here it is...what they in Alaska call "TrooperGate".
Sarah Palin's sister Molly married a guy named Mike Wooten who is an Alaska State Trooper. Mike and Molly had a rocky marriage. When the marriage broke up, there was a bitter custody fight that is still ongoing. During the custody investigation, all sorts of things were brought up about Wooten including the fact that he had illegally shot a moose (yes folks this is Alaska), driven drunk, and used a taser (on the test setting, he reminds us) on his 11-year old stepson, who supposedly had asked to see what it felt like. While Wooten has turned out to be a less than stellar figure, the fact that Palin's father accompanied him on the infamous moose hunt, and that many of the dozens of charges brought up by the Palin family happened long before they were ever reported smacked of desperate custody fight. Wooten's story is that he was basically stalked by the family.
After all this, Wooten was investigated and disciplined on two counts and allowed to kept his position with the troopers. Enter Walt Monegan, Palin's appointed new chief of the Department of Public Safety and head of the troopers. Monegan was beloved by the troopers, did a bang-up job with minimal funding and suddenly got axed. Palin was out of town and Monegan got "offered another job" (aka fired) with no explanation to Alaskans. Pressure was put on the governor to give details, because rumors started to swirl around the fact that the highly respected Monegan was fired because he refused to fire the aforementioned Mike Wooten. Palin vehemently denied ever talking to Monegan or pressuring Monegan in any way to fire Wooten, or that anyone on her staff did. Over the weeks it has come out that not only was pressure applied, there were literally dozens of conversations in which pressure was applied to fire him. Monegan has testified to this fact, spurring an ongoing investigation by the Alaska state legislature. But, before this investigation got underway, Palin sent the Alaska State Attorney General out to do some investigative work of his own so she could find out in advance what the real investigation was going to find.(No, I'm not making this up). The AG interviewed several people, unbeknownst to the actual appointed investigator or the Legislature! Palin's investigation of herself uncovered a recorded phone call retained by the Alaska State Troopers from Frank Bailey, a Palin underling, putting pressure on a trooper about the Wooten non-firing. Todd Palin (governor's husband) even talked to Monegan himself in Palin's office while she was away. Bailey is now on paid administrative leave.
As if this weren't enough, Monegan's appointed replacement Chuck Kopp, turns out to have been the center of his own little scandal. He received a letter of reprimand and was reassigned after sexual harrassment allegations by a former coworker who didn't like all the unwanted kissing and hugging in the office. Was he vetted? Obviously not. When he was questioned about all this, his comment was that no one had asked him and he thought they all knew. Kopp, defiant, still claimed to have done nothing wrong and said to the press that there was no way he was stepping down from his new position. Twenty four hours later, he stepped down. Later it was uncovered that he received a $10,000 severance package for his two weeks on the job from Palin. Monegan got nothing.
After extensive news coverage about all this nasty behind-the-scenes scandal, which is definitely NOT squeaky clean, Palin's approval ratings fell to 67%, still high, but a far cry from the 90% number that's being thrown around so glibly by the Republicans today. Alaskans are quickly becoming disillusioned once again.

I absolutely agree we need to look at the issues - and ourselves.
It's clear we are saying the same things. That's cool. And this is why I pay little mind to some of these stories. Because of this, I say one more thing. I think we all want what is best for America. What a weird, weird choice. The Governor of caribou and oil rigs, without any exposure to foreign policy whatsoever... would be Vice-President?

A 72 year old heartbeat away from leading the free world?

A self-styled "hockey mom" who governs a state with the population of a mid-sized American city?

C'mon now, are you Republicans really serious? You're kidding, right?

Seriously, you can't allow this to happen. Even you Republicans need to realize this is foolish. You need to nominate a viable candidate at your convention, not an inexperienced joke under investigation.

This woman isn't qualified at all. At least Obama has had several years of exposure in the Senate to foreign policy and has visited many of the countries we lead, he has been speaking out on foreign policy for years; this woman has nothing but a beauty contest and hockey league resume... no foregn policy exposure, no positions, no speeches, no visits to foreign countries, nothing.

Get real Republicans, this dog isn't going to hunt.

You Republicans need to do your duty, reject Palin and come up with a viable legitimate candidate.

What if McCain were actually elected and died within a few months? Have you all lost your minds?

Caribou don't vote.

Palin's "experience" claims -

Palin cited her mayoral work as a central part of her qualification to serve as Governor. But at the beginning of her Mayoral term, asked by the local newspaper how she would run the city (population 6500) without experienced department heads, she made the job sound like no big deal: "It's not rocket science. It's $6 million and 53 employees"

Running 53 employees (as Mayor) "qualified" Palin to be Governor, where running a state with the same population as Charlotte, North Carolina for 500+ days has seemingly qualified her to be a 72 year old heartbeat from the Presidency.

This nonsensical decision speaks a lot about the judgement and desperation of John McCain and the Republicans.

Your sister is in an abusive relationship. Her ex has a license to carry a gun and you know what he's done in the past. ANY normal American would do ANYTHING to help your sibling and get this guy out of the picture. And you use whatever you need to and help. So, that's an issue. I count that as a positive response as a human being.
Obama's got a brother in Africa he doesn't even sent dime one to. NICE!

Bin Laden planned it long before Bush was elected, and lapses in the Clinton adminstration played a huge part in the fact bin Laden was successful on that terrible day.
I am not blaming Clinton or anyone else, though. Hind sight is 20-20.
So, since 2001, how many terrorist attacks have we had an American soil?
Hmmmmm - let me think - oh, yes, the answer is "none".
You cannot rationally blame Bush for 9/11, and he has kept us safe since then.
Actually, there have been many attacks according to the administration. They have been unsuccessful as of yet.

However, the real question is not how many attacks have their been, it is how many could there have been. WE have open borders and open ports. In the meantime we have delays at airports but none at bus stations or train depots. If we have nbot been attacked, it is simply because our enemies have not tried.

Frustrated in Alaska wrote:
Dear Ann Landers,
I have a wonderful opportunity to run for political office, but my family is getting in my way.
My husband, who is away a lot working for BP Oil Company on the North Slope also is frequently gone weekends on fishing trips and loves to race dog sleds.
Meanwhile, we have 5 children, the youngest of which is an infant born with Downs Syndrome. My 17 year old daughter also is pregnant out of wedlock, but we are making the boy, who is a high school senior who doesn't want kids yet, marry her.
My question is do you think it is appropriate for me to become a part-time Mom by serving in a political position in Washington, D.C.?
My concern is that my husband loves it here in Alaska and my family does have some issues that will not get my full attention if I go to Washington. I may be trading my family for political ambition, or I may be able to make them all to leave the Alaska they love and accompany me to Washington, D.C.
What is your advice?
Signed,
Frustrated in Alaska

Again, a example that shows McCain picked the right choice for VP. All you left wing wackos can't stand the fact Palin is a strong politician who reformed Alaskan politics, knows more about energy policy than Obama every knew, has actual experience running a government (more than obama) and is a strong leader. Ask Alaskans why her approval rating is over 80%. Yea, hard to make political hay with a women who kept a precious Down Syndrome baby when give the option to abort and a women that when finding out her daughter was pregnant dealt with that issue and now her daughter is keeeping the baby and marrying the father. Yea, that's big poltical news to the left. Oh yea, better yet the report her husband was arrested 22 years ago on a DUI charge about the same time Obama was doing Cocaine. Obama's words not mine!

Funny, a left wing bed wetting liberal Democrat who follows their candidate like he was a GOD making your statements. Sorry Palin did go on the Obama the Messiah tour for a week around the world. Sorry one week traveling does not make forign policy experience.

No crawl back under your rock and keep crying that McCain did not pick someone who the Democrats already had negative ads made for!
