Wind farm that got $107M under stimulus act generates controversy in Missouri's US Senate race

Perhaps there is a way to harness all the wind coming from the canidates,during the election season. That would solve the nations energy shortages quickly.

That's because the Lost Creek Wind Farm, which received $107 million in stimulus money, was developed by a company run by Tom Carnahan — the younger brother of Democratic Senate candidate Robin Carnahan and U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan.

Vice President Joe Biden highlighted the project during a visit to Missouri in April 2009. Two weeks ago, the White House included it on a list of "100 Recovery Act Projects Changing America."

Since then, the wind farm has generated a steady breeze of criticism for Republicans.

Missouri Republican Party Executive Director Lloyd Smith claimed the Carnahans "used their power and influence to bail out their own brother with more than $100 million in taxpayer dollars."

Democrat Dishonesty.

As they should because it is stupid to waste time and money on such things now. Windmills, solar farms, ocean pumps, biomass fuels, crude, they are now unnecesary and a waste of time....what a laughable story.

Dow Chemical Exploits President Obama's Failed Energy Policy

Washington, D.C.- Today policy experts at the National Center for Public Policy Research are calling attention to Dow Chemical's exploitation of Obama's failed energy policy.

"Dow Chemical is taking advantage of President Obama's failed leadership on energy. Dow is aggressively lobbying for cap-and-trade and Obama's green initiatives to line its pockets with taxpayers' funds while it expands the company's manufacturing base overseas. American taxpayers are subsidizing Dow's moving costs," said Tom Borelli, Ph.D., director of the National Center's Free Enterprise Project.

Dow is a member of the United States Climate Action Partnership - a lobbying coalition that is actively pursuing cap-and-trade legislation.

The Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade bill that passed the House of Representatives last year gave companies the vast majority of energy tax revenue in the form of carbon allowances free of charge. Originally, President Obama intended to auction off carbon allowances to industry with the revenue going to the government.

Dow is expanding its investment in overseas operations especially in the Middle East. In 2007, Dow entered into an agreement with Saudi Aramco to establish a multi-billion dollar petrochemical joint venture based in Saudi Arabia. More recently, Dow partnered with the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology on a multi-million dollar joint research effort.

"Dow CEO Andrew Liveris' actions demonstrate he sees the company's future outside the U.S. In the U.S., Dow is happy to join with the growing list of climate profiteers to exploit Obama's green dream but when it comes to real investment in chemical manufacturing, Liveris is all in with Saudi Arabia," added Tom Borelli.

Dow is also aggressively lobbying for the Home Star Energy Retrofit Act of 2010. The legislation, also known as 'Cash for Caulkers,' was recently passed by the House of Representatives, and provides rebates for homeowners who take measures to update their homes with energy saving products such as insulation. Dow, a supplier of home insulation products, stands to cash-in on the bill that provides $6 billion in rebates.

"Savvy CEOs are reaping the benefits of Obama's poor leadership. Big business has figured out it can profit from Obama's green initiatives which are subsidized by government funds. This is a losing proposition for Americans; our debt goes up while companies such as Dow use subsidies to make significant investments overseas," said Deneen Borelli, Fellow with Project 21.

According to the Investigative Reporting Workshop at American University, nearly $2 billion in money from the American Recovery and Investment Act has been spent on wind power. The goal was to further energy independence while creating American jobs. It has done neither.

Of the money spent, according to the report, nearly 80% has gone to foreign manufacturers of wind turbines.

The President set aside millions of stimulus dollars for green initiatives as part of last year's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Since then, the government has handed out $1.7 billion dollars into the wind power industry. But, the big news is where the money is going. America's new "green rush" has turned into a 21st century "gold rush" for other countries.

"Foreign companies are looking at the U.S. and are seeing a really great opportunity," said Russ Choma of America University. His investigation, along with a U.S. Senate report found more than a billion dollars going to foreign-owned energy companies. It's because they dominate the field of manufacturing the turbines and other equipment for windmill farms."

The Spanish-based company Iberdrola has gotten $443 million in stimulus funds so far. The Portugal-based company E.D.P. has gotten $229 million. The British-based company Terra Firma is getting $42 million. It bought the Highland Wind Farm in western Pennsylvania from an American company just days before the stimulus awards were announced last year.

Woof, Sheep, the problem with your analysis is the only reason the price of fossil fuel is rising is taxes and false green regulations. The real price of oil per barrel should be about $23/barrel right now, but for all the phony crap. Compare to wind and solar, which wouldn't even be alive if it weren't for government subsidies.

I wonder if the Carnahan dynasty remembered to buy American with those taxpayer dollars?

You can bet dollars to donuts that they spent the money in China buying cheap foreign windmills.

Yeah, just wait till we're sending warships to escort oil tankers from the middle east so the Chinese or Indians don't take hijack them. That scenario is closer than you all realize.

By the end of the decade we'll be in yet another war, this time there will be no pretense- everyone will know it's a war for control of the oil fields.

Most of all Government has ruined our lives, our livelihood, and our people. also BTW Cattle usually do not get fed corn, Corn has absolutely no nutritional value to people or animals.
A smart progressive should know that.

No nutritional value? Seriously? OMG how can anyone BE so ignorant? Have you ever been on a farm? Just what do you think we grow all those billions of bushels of corn for? If you grew up on a farm like I did, you'd know that beef cattle & hogs & chickens are typically fed a diet of corn & soy concentrate, especially the large factory farms.

A few other corn facts for you all you city-slickers from the Dept of Agriculture:

-The annual U.S. corn harvest is about 13 billion bushels a year.
-The U.S. accounts for 45% of the world's corn production.
-Corn is the #1 food staple in the world, for animals AND people.
-60% of the U.S. corn crop goes to animal feed, 25% for food & exports, & 15% to ethanol production.

Typical city slicker; clueless about agriculture. Ethanol & soy diesel are the absolute LEAST productive use of our corn & soybean crop.
