Katrina's victims continue to live in limbo

“We finally cleaned up public housing in New Orleans. We couldn't do it, but God did.”

Mary Ann Wright has been waiting to return home to the Lafitte public housing development in New Orleans for 20 months, but the federal government stands in her way. via The Honolulu Advertiser

Thats what i'm talking about. Where's the money?! Them folks had to stay with other folks and when they wanted to come back only to find their property sold or boarded up.. Do you think they should've came right back and got their property papers?

I don't know Mssons. Were they able to go right back? And i know, some owned homes, and some lived in public housing. All there papers were probably, lost. I wonder, if they were able to save some things. I don't know, it was a mess. And i really, feel for them, my heart goes out to them.

here in Phoenix, last week, we tried to hold a fundraiser for the folks in Mississippi. Jackson County actually got hit by Katrina. But not enough people signed up.$75.00 pop, then a "silent auction." Probably run you $150 to last the evening.

No complaints, only an explanation why things didn't work.

Great post.

Definitely in need of answers....All those people marched to the governors office. And still someone is ignoring them. I'd say.......whats the point of being in the office if you can't help your own people. Where's the mayor when they need him?

Well, once again, look at the priorities of your government. They speak of human rights for illegal aliens, and democracy in Iraq, but an entire coast on the southern border of our nation is all but gone, and not even so much as a debate from capital hill.

I understand, exactly. By the way, I use to live at 3900 Lake Shore Dr. and would hang on Broadway and Belmont. I hear my old neighborhood is going strrong.

Many Katrina evacuees in Houston still unemployed 2 years later..IN A BOOMING ECONOMY!!!WTF...The Hispanic immigrants will do anything to support their familes! Why not the blacks?
Nineteen months after Hurricane Katrina sent evacuees from New Orleans streaming into Houston, more than 5,000 heads of households among them are still unemployed despite the city’s booming economy, officials say.
The number of jobless is contributing to the sense among some Houston-area residents that the storm’s victims are a drain on the city and have worn out their welcome.
{snip}
Many had been holding out hope that they would be home in New Orleans by now, but the city’s rebuilding has been painfully slow, and about 100,000 are still here. They have settled in more or less permanently, some still on food stamps.
About 12,000 families are still getting federal aid for housing, the city said. Of that group, about 5,500 heads of households are unemployed, not counting those who are elderly and disabled, city officials said.
Houston’s economy is hot because of the booming oil and gas industry. City officials say there are 2 million job openings, 59,000 of which require only a high school education. Houston’s unemployment rate is 3.8 percent, versus 4.5 percent nationally.
{snip}
Sixty-five percent of Houstonians surveyed earlier this year by Rice University said the influx of evacuees has been a “bad thing” for their city. And some blame the new residents for a surge in violent crime. The number of homicides jumped from 275 in 2004 to 376 in 2006.
{snip}
The government already is offering considerable help. FEMA-paid housing has been extended to 2009 and federal officials will move an evacuee closer to a job. Thirty hours of work a week earns an evacuee free child care.
The city Community Settlement Task Force Network has spent $1.9 million since October offering resume help, free interview-appropriate clothes, job fairs, financial workshops, free food for children, computer classes, even hurricane-preparedness workshops. The money comes from $550 million in federal social-services grants that Congress authorized for all Katrina evacuees.
{snip}
Houston is sprawling metropolitan area, with a web of highways; New Orleans is more compact, and many residents there relied on public transportation—something not always available in their new city. Also, some single mothers are separated from members of their extended family and can no longer rely on them for child care.

Why did he move back? There were many Katrina victims who moved here to CO for a bit when it first happened, but it seems like 90% of them left to go back to the gulfcoast. That's just plain old love for your region I suppose. Screw that!! I left the gulfcoast and never looked back!! I'm happy here in Denver where it's cleaner, safer, and more opportunities.

I guess ALL "blacks", to you, are people who just don't want to work, right? It's just a question so don't take it as if I am attacking you. I agree with most of your points, but you point out the Katrina victims as if it was ONLY a "black" thing. There were just as many "whites" and other groups who sat on their arses while the rest of us helped them out at their time of need. Haven't you heard about the "victims" here in CO who were recently busted for Katrina evacuee fraud? Some were "black" and some were "white." Now when I first heard that most New Orleans victims moved to Houston, TX....I already knew that city was bound to be destroyed along with its tourism. Lets face it, most of the criminals from NOLA migrated to Houston and helped ruin the city. Texas did the right thing by helping its neighbors, but they should've done a criminal background check while these people were there for refuge. I work for a huge Corporation here in Denver, but dealing with the entire U.S. and I can tell you....the number one question that most people ask when dealing with Houston folks are "are there a lot of Katrina evacuees there?" If I budge to answer, then they do NOT want to relocate to that city. It's ashame that TX has to deal with this. On another note, like I said....this natural disaster isn't about race but class and politics. THAT played a major role in who got the most help and who didn't down there.

I lived in the gulf coast during Katrina. Kinda hated to see the violence sky rocket in schools with transplanted kids. Drive through New Orleans three weeks after it happened and see people sitting on cars drinking 40's instead of applying for jobs so easy to get now with everyone gone. Signs for employment posted like garage sale signs everywhere. Free money is hard to be weened from.

They just don't want to work!!! The Mexicans are literally dying for the opportunity to work and these folks just sit around complaining. Now that's the sh!t!
It's not that these people do not want to work, they can not get hired even on construction of NOLA because the construction manager is hiring illegals so he does not have to pay a fair wage. And if the construction manager just happens to be Latino, he will hire only other Latinos.

That evacuees are being blamed for crimes?

Well, if they're black, NO.

We had a situation similar to this here, where students at my school were behaving worse.

Some were QUICK TO POINT THE FINGER AT OPEN-ENROLLMENT, BUT OUR HEAD PERSON STAYED WISE AND POINTED OUT THAT THE PERPETRAITORS WERE

STUDENTS ALREADY FROM HERE.(and he's white, which put's you to shame)

Why are you blaming black victoms for mexicans getting jobs, BUT WHEN THEY DO IT TO YOUR ARSES YOU SAY TO

GET THE PHUCK OUT??!!!!

In short, why do YOU TRY TO FRAME OTHER 'RACES' AS HYPOCRITES LIKE YOU AREN'T THE BIGGEST ONES?!!
