Offshore drilling vote? That rests with Pelosi

A plan to lift the ban on coastal drilling is stalled on Capitol Hill, for one simple reason: A Californian who opposes President Bush's proposal is calling the shots in the House of Representatives.

grow up, fellas! your sweet and caring president bush43 said the USA would benefit from lower gas prices as a result of increased oil supplies, all thanks to the war in iraq. i don't see you wanting to vote him out of office or applauding his stupidity. why not?
republicans today are good at three things - being angry, pointing fingers and refusing to accept responsibility for the errors of their own party.
time to get real, republicans.. 68 million acres to play around with. stop promoting the wealth of the oilman by giving him more and more land.

Visitor45, I think you forgot to mention something... Congress is controlled by the Democrats not Republicans and they make the laws... Let's put the blame where it belongs.. With the "Do Nothings" Like Hussein Obama..

Realist, you really should try to keep up:
GOP kills Democrat oil drilling proposal
WASHINGTON - House Republicans on Thursday killed a Democratic plan designed to spur drilling on already available federal lands in Alaska, the West and the western Gulf of Mexico.

Republicans scoffed that the Drill Act — imposing a tougher “use it or lose it” rule on leases already held by oil companies — would do little to boost exploration. They renewed their demand to open up the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and the eastern Gulf of Mexico to exploration....

Democrats pointed out that any new offshore leasing — sought by the administration, most Republicans and some Democrats — would not produce oil for a decade or so and therefore would not effect today’s $4-plus per gallon gasoline prices....

“Drill. Drill. Drill,” said Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., the chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee.“Drill here. Drill now.”

Democrats again called on President Bush to release some oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in an attempt to immediately drive down prices....

Democrats again called on President Bush to release some oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in an attempt to immediately drive down prices.

As debate began, the White House weighed in with a veto threat...On the eve of the vote, the Interior Department issued a major new lease in Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve. The Democratic bill would require a more active department leasing program on the reserve...Democrats say the industry should first go after oil and natural gas on 68 million acres already leased.

Democrats also say Republicans are simply seeking political advantage with a pro-drilling plan that won’t deliver new U.S. oil for another decade or so, and that the GOP’s fixation on drilling is a smoke screen for the administration’s inability to prevent the sharp spike in gasoline prices....Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., moved to begin debate on a bill aimed at curbing speculation in the oil markets that Democrats say has contributed to the rapid rise in the price of oil."

Again, conservatives are pretty stupid. Big oil has 10 of millions of acres of leased land that they could drill today all over the US.

Ever heard of the NPR in Alaska

Again, stupid Americans - are you ever going to stop buying this bs.

Their liars folks.

With margin of error figured in, Obama has been running close to 50% popular support. I'm starting to think the deciding factor is IQ.

Offshore drilling will not affect gas prices for years just so you know.

Bush wants to lift the ban on offshore drilling.

That will increase domestic production and be good for consumer prices and the economy.

Pelosi opposes drilling offshore which means she is to blame for higher prices in the future.

I'm not sure I agree with your statement .

A financial TV reporter called some in the off-shore drilling industry and they say it could be as soon as 1-2-3 years. The rigs already exist floating in California Harbors waiting for work. Natural oil wells leak oil to the surface without ever being touched by humans.

The eastern Gulf of Mex. has rigs readily available in the Gulf.

ANWAR has rigs a few hundred miles west of its' location on the n. slope of Alaska.

Have any of you anti-drilling types ever read or studied the oil lease contracts ?
It seems many of the Dem Congress critters haven't.
Many proposals the Dems want have been law for decades but I guess they are just illiterate or the Eco-Freak lobby has them scared shyteless.

In order for oil companies to begin drilling anywhere, they need to have proof that there is a substantial amount of oil underground to warrant drilling in that location. They own vast amounts of land but are not drilling because the gains don't outweigh the costs. If there were huge amounts there to drill, don't you think they would be drilling and making huge amounts of money? They are businesses and they need to be smart with their money. The government is not a business and it can be as fiscally irresponsible as it so desires because when the goings get tough, they can tax us more. Don't look to the government to solve our economic problems. They don't even know how to operate successfully on their insanely large budget.

Unless you don't plan to be around a few years from now, or have family members that won't be around, you may still want to support drilling that will be beneficial at that time. I may not be here for it but I have kids and grandkids that I am sure will still be around.

I guess we are pretty stupid because we should have been drilling more wells about 10 years ago...

And what excuse are we using today again....?

What we really need to do is build some more refinerys as well....

I like McCain & I hope he don't think the same as the rest of Republicans who suck up for drilling more domestic oil.
The Republicans believe that producing more domestic oil & use less is the answer to the gas price crisis.President George Bush announced at the state of the Union 3-4 years ago that Americans are addictive to gasoline. Well, just like saying to Americans, here have some more drugs & cocaine but you need to use less. The Republicans thinks that Americans are that stupid or maybe the Republicans is right.
I can't depend on Obama in protecting our great nation. But I'm out of work right now & Democrats is the only one cares about the economy & on how I can put food on my family table & pay my bills.Do I really give a crap about war in Iraq?

If we are still using oil as our source of energy by that point, I doubt the minuscule amount of it from offshore drilling will change the fact that we will be f*cked.

I guess you and Al Gore are going to put magical fairy dust in our cars then?

There is no replacement RIGHT now and the oil won't take 10 years. In the gulf down here they have tons of lines drilled and the oil is tapped but it will take about 25-30 years to get all the permits they need to pump it out. Sooooo there goes that great government solving our problems again.

Libs confuse me. The government can't save us from hurricanes and they hate us people, claim liberals, but in the same breathe. They think they can run our health care, energy and practically everything else to save us all. Without fault.

God please lay off the drugs and wake up yo retarded libs.

If Offshore drilling is left up to Pelosi, it will never happen. I have to know if her constituents all agree with what she decided in their name. I know people that live in Ca. and have told me that they feel that the state governments representatives as well as the members of congress do not listen to them. Are they right? Do they only listen to the libs?
