Taylor: Public Will have Say on Salt Dome
“One of the reasons we're so upset is that we feel that we've been left out of the loop”
At a public meeting in Gautier on Monday, U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor promised outspoken residents and public officials that the highly debated Richton salt dome project would be more of a public process going forward.
'I can't remember when public hearings didn't win out,' he said.
The Department of Energy project has been criticized for excluding public comment on the project; the environmental assessment of the Leaf River as a water source to dissolve the salt dome in Perry County began three days after Katrina, and in spite of findings of possible damage to endangered species and Coast economies, the project was approved in early 2007. Those SOB's in Washington making decisions for us when all of the coast were without power. If this happens Mississippians will have a dead zone to go along with Louisiana.
